Stan Lee's early Banner was pretty interesting, as far as the early days of simple comics were concerned. He'd use his intelligence to save the day and where that failed he'd desperately change himself into the Hulk. He was adventurous and he invented many things in those days, but it some time after the Savage Hulk emerged, and he just kind of had a defeatist attitude and stayed on the run. Bill Mantlo bought back that Banner that Stan was developing and began to explore the psychology of Hulk. I enjoyed PAD's Banner as he seemed like he was trying to find himself, but what Greg Pak has done has taken the cake. Greg Pak's Banner has made up his mind that he's tired of being the victim and he's not afraid to use his gift of intelligence.
The Hulk and Banner struggle for dominance of self, as you've ascertained, is what has to work in order to have the audience invest in them. I loved that scene that you mentioned from PAD's run with the alcohol. There was also a time in PAD' run where a giant robot grabbed Banner and he arrogantly awaited Hulk to pop out and save the day. Hulk eventually did but only after he made Banner sweat it out first. In the recent Greg Pak issues, Hulk and Banner seem to at least tolerate each other, though they don't see eye to eye. This is what the movies have been missing. These scenario's can be played for kicks.
I think one of the most interesting characteristics about Hulk and Banner is that where they differ in many ways, they also have many common characteristics. Both are loyal and caring towards friends, both are relentless in their pursuits, both are stubborn in their ways etc....
