What's The Last Movie You Watched? VIII - Part 2

Thank God my theater still has 2D showings. There are more 3D showings and we have an IMAX where Thor was playing in 3D but my friends and I saw it at the 9:15 pm show. It's weird getting out of a theater at 11 at night with it closed and the whole theater walking out with all the life gone from it. Kind of eerie.

Spider-Man

A.I. Artificial Intelligence - 8/10

I don't think I've ever felt more ambivalent over a film before. It was very touching and made me a bit teary eyed yet it felt cold to me. Perhaps it was out of pity of David or there was an understandment. Not identification with him, but how a child yearns love. It's sad that David seems to have the most compassion and love more than any of the human characters in this film. Some of the people themselves seem more inhuman or just don't care about what is human anymore.

This film isn't just a tribute to Kubrick, but a testament to both Kubrick and Spielberg. Spielberg honors the late filmmaker but thank God, he doesn't try to duplicate what Kubrick would have done. Now there are some designs and elements that are very Kubrickian (like Teddy, the narrator, and the design of those bridge statues in the entrance of Rouge City) This was as much Spielberg's story as it was Kubrick's. I've always known about their friendship, but to me there's a sad iront that Spielberg had to show us instead of Kubrick himself. He's not as cold as people say he is with his films. Spielberg has said this time and again, and this shows. I think with no doubt that Kubrick would have done the same things. Critics of this film could say otherwise and say they know Kubrick, but no one really knew his films when they were inititially released. This is quite different, but that fact that this was Kubrick's originally shows who he truly was. But Spielberg showed it to us through his own eyes. It adds to the story.

Haley Joel Osmont gives just the right performance. And I think he's the reason why I'm ambivalent towards it. It's this subconcious thing where you know he's a mecha, yet your own human emotions pull for him and respond to it. I think that's such a terrific way to ask the question of what makes us truly human.

In the beginning you think of it more as a morality thing than an emotional one. But it becomes more of an emotional one. There are morality questions of course, but what it is about is David's journey to become real and loved. Not just as a human, but love. It's the defining thing in anything.

Thor

8/10

Surpassed my expectations and thankfully the trailers didn't give away the whole movie because a few things surprised me.

Hemsworth is great and really pulls off the character. The whole cast is solid but Hemsworth has a lot of charisma. He handles the humor well but at the same time handles the action well. He's likable yet overconfident early on. The film rides on his performance and he delivers.

Tom Hiddleston deserves some praise as Loki. There are a few really clever ways that Branagh displays how and why Loki earns that trickster reputation. Hiddlestons performance has some nice subtleties and nuances to it where he seems passive and honorable but you know he's lying and has an agenda.

Hopkins of course steps into, for him, a familiar type of role as father figure/ruler but with the twist of being a godking on top of it. He does a good job with it.

Wasn't sure how Natalie Portman would handle this kind of movie. She's done fantasy and comic book movies before. Some she did well in and some she did not so well in but here she's good.

Edris Elba is awesome as Heimdall. Its a minor role but he is very memorable.

There are a couple of really cool cameos by other Marvel characters that worked very well. The earlier new one didn't stick out like a sore thumb and was subtle but cool.

The story is simple but effective. Thor and Loki both go through their respective arcs and both are very believable and compelling from a character point of view. The villains of the film work despite not being developed in very much detail. They do serve their purpose well though. The action is good and the way they bring to life things like Thor flying and spinning and throwing the hammer look awesome.

I've got to give a lot of credit to Branagh for pulling off the visuals of Asgard and its people. Its not an exact copy of the books but Marvel Studios and Branagh's take on it and they deliver something thats based on the world we've read about in the books but at the same time looks more classy. The look of THOR as a film EASILY could have turned out to be ridiculous but it works. The production design actually reminds me a little of Masters of The Universe only with a LOT more money.

I mean years ago when this film was first announces I had no clue how they'd pull off stuff like the Rainbow Bridge in a film with real flesh and blood actors but they came up with a design for it that makes it look awesome.

One of Marvel Studios best and probably one of the better recent films based on a Marvel comic period. I don't know if its in the top five of Marvel based films but its certainly in the GOOD part of the spectrum. When I rank it with Marvel Studio films I'd say Thor is below Iron Man but above Iron Man 2 and probably slightly above The Incredible Hulk as well (and I really enjoyed TIH).

WWE:Big Show:A Giants World
9.9/10(I just wish it had more interviews from more wrestlers&people)

Green Hornet...holy crap this was awful 3/10. 1 point for a few funny jokes, 1 point for a few good action scenes and 1 point for Christoph Waltz. This movies sucked balls...Gondry clearly was more in love with bruce lee than this movie...it was like his way of getting his fandom into the movie. What a mess...

Thor

Jesus Christ Superstar 8.5/10

Legend(1985) 5.5/10
Tim Curry was wasted in that movie.SMH

Thor in Glorious 2D - 7.5/10

Fun, entertaining, cheesy as ****ing hell. Pretty much a perfect comic book movie. It's baffling to me how this movie didn't come out completely terrible due to the ridiculousness of the subject matter. Hats off to the actors and Branagh.

Thor.
A great Marvel movie. I'm surprised by it.
