The Thin Red Line - 9.7/ 10 - I'm really not a Malick fan (I especially can't stand Tree of Life) but this is f****** great. Possibly my favorite War film. Thank you for this one, Malick.

I don't think it works. Technically speaking, JJ Abrams is an undeniably gifted director and he gets great work out of his young cast, especially Elle Fanning, who is simply luminous, but what is this movie about? Is it a coming of age story? About coming to grips with death? About familial repair? Young love? The misunderstood outsider? What does that climactic moment with the locket have to do with anything? What has anyone learned? How have these people grown? Where's the through line? This is a script that just doesn't work.
