When you go out to lunch/dinner do you sit on same side or across from other person?

I've always preferred sitting across from the other person. I have seen couples sit at a booth, but on the same side with no other people with them.

What is the purpose of the side by side sit though (I mean with just 2 sitting)? I see it here and there, and just can't process how such a choice was made.

Most of the time I just go to dinner by myself. When the waiter comes by I say "she's in the bathroom" and order another meal which I sit across from me. I then eat half of both meals and walk out of the door at the same time as a hot woman (so it appears that I'm with her). After sobbing in the street for a few minutes and then downing a few whiskeys at the bar its home and to bed, where I stare at the ceiling gripped by the futility of life.
