Comics Which comic book version of Peter Parker does Tobey Maguire remind you of?

He kind of reminds me of the Ultimate version, and that's because he gets very emotional.

Ditko with a bit of Ultimate and a small dash of John Romita.

^I'd actually agree on reviewing it, while Ditko plays a major factor the tone of the out of costume hijinx and drama and Peter's struggles are very Romita-esque. He is a mixture and Maguire's interpretation. It captures the essence of the early on character. Sure after Conway got there he dropped all geekiness and was just a regular looking charmer but I see RAimi pulling between the golden age (Lee/Romita/early Conway) and the Ditko era. He just progresses slowly into a more confidant fellow and it is not an overnight thing which while comic readers don't mind, would seem out of character for such a transition between SM1 and SM2. But looking at SM3 he is certainly more confidant and outgoing (pre-symbiote too) than he was in SM1 and by the end he is a mature adult as he gets MJ back without words and finally understands what a relationship means.

Just my 2 cents, though.

Aloha,
Just for your reference. Spidey has no Golden Age he's too young. He starts off in the Silver Age which is from 1956-69 (AF #15, AS-M #1-79) Bronze Age (1970-79) A S-M #80-188 and Modern Age 1980-to present. Lee/Ditko and Romita are from the Silver Age.Lee/Romita and Conway also Bronze Age.
Spidey rules in all ages

I meant Spidey's golden age: as in the best age of Spidey comics. I think it began around Master Planner and ended either at the Death of Gwen Stacy/The Green Goblin or shortly after (after Harry became the GG and Peter lost MJ in Conway's run).

I think while Parker was very hip in that age he was very weighted and burdened and constantly whining (though that is him in all Spidey comics) and always stuck between giving up Spider-Man or sticking with it and trying to get the girl (whether it was Liz Allen, Betty Brant, Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane Watson or later on Deborah whatshername or Felcia Hardy/Black Cat and MJ-agan).

He started out in Ditko's era and early Tomita as a struggling geek who became less and less introverted and was quietly noble. The movies have captured that but he never became hip like he did in the comics. In the third though he became more cinfdant and his problems are starting to reflect more the '80s which is Peter trying to balance serious relationships (BC or MJ) with being Spider-Man and are less juvinile or adolescent in nature. Albeit Raimi wanted Parker to still be a "stupid kid," learning his last lessons before adulthood in SM3 and even if he was more confident, RAimi wanted him still to be a geek.

Which is slightly more realistic, while I don't think anyone struts down the street like Parker in SM3 (then again, not many have alien symbiotes on them either...at least I hope) someone who was so introverted for the formulative years of his life (until what, college?) may become more outgoing and able to fit into society happily, but will still retain the characteristics that osterchized him to some degree. It's just swinging cat Peter was cooler and sold more comics in the '70s and early '80s, though.

Peter since the marriage has certainly cooled off. Maybe not geeky, but certainly not edgy. Though Joey Q, the bastard, wants to change that. Oh well.

I think Toby captures the physical movement of Spiderman, but other than that he doesn't 'feel' like Peter Parker at all, or look like him. Peter outgrew the dorky phase long ago...this reminds me of all the actors who played Batman in the movies...one would have the persona, another would have the physical attributes, another the 'psyche' but none of them captured the entire bruce/batman dynamic (although bale comes close, he's a bit James Bondish in the role).

To me Toby looks like some homely guy they got off the street.

a composite of the ditko and colege era pete
as for thenom i think he was all wrong and shoud NOT have polluted the movie
ladies and gentlemen i give you VINO[VENOM IN NAME ONLY]

In my opinion...i can't come up with WHO should play Peter Parker...

Toby isn't bad per say either...imo...

As someone said earlier...there are some actors who just FEEL right for their parts

...first example that jumps to mind for me was Bill Bixby as Bruce Banner, in The Incredible Hulk (the tv show.)

Hugh Jackman is Wolverine.

Patrick Stewart is Professor X.

Ian McKellen IS so totally Gandolf the Wizard
etc....

The guy who played (Black Suit?!:wow: ) Daredevil in the TV Hulk movie was someone who jumps to mind as so totally not a "MAtt Murdock" at all...and while i like Ben Affleck.....he neither is "Matt" to me in looks or in spirit.

Toby is Spider-Man....and i love the movies....but he is not a DEFINITIVE Peter Parker. But i can't think of anyone who really IS either.

I know some people say Jake Gyllenhall (sp?!) but he basically looks like a Toby stunt double to me. So i dunno.

Toby just comes off, imo, "kinda" (in some ways) like the Adam West of Batmans.

That being said....i REALLY enjoyed watching THAT batman as a kid...and tuned in same bat-time, same bat-channel. Never missed it.

He reminds me of JR Sr's version.

Gyllenhall is a much more talented actor than Toby in my opinion.
I know exactly what you mean when you say Toby is not a definitive Peter.
But... I can't think of anyone else who could play him.
The closest to Peter Parker that we ever got outside of the comics, is the Fox TV show from the 90's. That guy's voice IS Peter Parker. They got the perfect guy.

a pathetic incarnation of Ditko's Peter.

Everytime I see that cartoon American dad "Steve Smith"
That’s whom he reminds me of!
Even though he's ok now as Spiderman!

The same way that Fry (Futurama) always remind me of the late John Ritter

There are a lot of people out there who looks quite like cartoon
I know this big guy who really looks like Shrek (with a better body)
We sometime train together in the gym but I never tell him that

A few people think I look like Ang lee's hulk, especially my little nephew.
But I don't really think so
I think Ang lee’s hulk look more like that wrestler Sid justice

One friend of mine who is just as tall as Denis Rodman and also look like the green goblin just as he, once told me that I look like tom cruise transforming into the hulk.

Aloha,
I completely agree with you as far as all of the amalgamations of Amazing continuity that went on in ALL of the Spidey movies. But in comparison to the rest of the comic book movies, at least Raimi did his homework and actually read the comics. Hollywood NEVER sticks to the book that the movie is based upon and thats something that I have been saying since I came on these boards 5 years ago. If you are looking for Hollywood to stick closely to the book you are almost always going to be disappointed. Venom is not part of the Ditko era. But for those millions of people who are not comic book fans ( like you and I) they could care less and have no clue.To this day for me -ORGANICS SUCKS and I still have that on my web site. The problem as we all know is that MONEY TALKS. The multi billion dollar success of the Spider-Man franchise has made some of the comic book fans criticisms MOOT. For me, I still want a state of the art animated feature that sticks to the comic books like glue.We can dream can't we?:yay:
Spidey rules

If you can only accept Spider-Man as being the comic, read the f****** comic.

I've always wondered which comic book Peter Parker does Tobey remind me of. Personally, his facial features and expressions seem very Steve Ditko to me, but his body structure is very Romita. What do you guys think?

that's about right .
