I didn't think either of them were bad. In fact, they were both necessary to maintain the realism that made this movie and it's sequels so good. To try and make us believe that a high school student can create a formula more powerful and advanced than anything produced by any adhesive company (with their billions of dollars and sophisticated lab equipment) is insane! It might work in comics, but when you see it in flesh and blood, some things just don't hold up. For instance, on-screen, a man flying around in scaly green spandex, wearing pointy purple boots and carrying a man-purse looks just plain silly. The subconcious mind starts fighting that this a real world story, and the movie then becomes.......Batman and Robin.
