Homecoming Who Should Be The Love Interest?

Honestly, if they skip the origin story I kinda want to see Peter still getting over Gwen Stacy, who had just died not too long ago. Maybe he goes out on a date with Liz Allan or Betty Brant but it doesn't work out because he's still grieving over Gwen, and then finally by movie's end he hints to Aunt May that he might finally be ready to move on. Aunt May sets him up on a blind date. Peter opens the door and bam, there's Mary Jane.

No. The death he is going to still be struggling to get over is Uncle Ben's.

He'll have somebody there though.

It'll be 70% Spidey, 30% Peter

TASM2 was 30% Spidey, 70% Peter

Although Amazing Spider-man 2 is the worst in all franchises, Spider-Man 3 had the least Spider-Man on screen time I'd bet.

That was like 15% Spider-Man, 85% Emo Peter

I thought Spider-Man 3 was everyone's favorite movie

It's too soon for Gwen
Betty Brant is out of the picture, since he's going to be a teen
I want Peter's relationship with MJ to develop in the second movie.
So I'd say Liz is a safe bet.

MARVEL should start with Gwen already dead. Not in order to establish a quasi-connection to the TASM series, but to give the character of Peter Parker more depth. We wouldn't see him mourn over her anymore, only mentioning that he lost two people he loved (uncle and Gwen) and that he learned his lesson, with great power comes great responsibility.

Thus, I'd start with MJ. Or maybe with Liz, as harryoscop mentioned. Have them already be together at the beginning of the movie. This way, you can introduce MJ later on with her iconic line. I'd really like to see that on the big screen one day. MJ has to be done justice!

I hope they don't focus on this at all. Hoping they go with young Peter, they focus on friendships between the group (Peter/Harry/MJ/Gwen/Eddie,Flash Thompson, etc). Whether they have MJ/Gwen/whoever else, them just being all friends first. Maybe little crushes. The last two franchises focused on his love life way too much. It was boring both times although Emma/Gwen was more tolerable to me. We have seen this dance before. Also notices that the best Marvel movies don't focus on romance and the ones that do (Thor, thank god for Loki) are the weakest.

They should just adapt Spectacular Spiderman cartoon.
I always felt the previous movies were isolated to just Peter/Aunt May, love interest and Harry. Lets open up his world and see more of his supporting characters.

Whatever the case, imo MJ should be cast/introduced in the first film even if it isn't a major role. They need a Peter and MJ that have really good chemistry.

No there's not. There's a weird obsession here with Watson.

IMHO, she's an uninspired choice for the project. Belle in Beauty and the Beast? No. Spider-Man's love interest? Yes.

If Watson were to ever join the MCU, I would rather it be for a much bigger role than a typical love interest or damsel in distress.

MJ is definitely not a typical love interest or damsel...when she's handled properly. It might even be a fun part to play if they make her the free-spirited force of nature that she is in the comics. :cwink:

I couldn't agree more. He's already Spiderman in the Marvel movie and he Sony production should keep that momentum going - no origin story, no retreading his journey to learning said lesson, etc

That has been pretty much my go to answer for everything!

what if the hero doesn't get the girl?... what if the love interest, is more of an unrequited love

with the subject of his affections not returning or even acknowledge his love...

on an unrelated side note, I'd like to see some female supporting character beyond the love interest, (like Debra Whitman, the way she was in the TAS) I always enjoyed the competitive/rivalry, back and forth they had there

I just think they should avoid the love interest entirely for the first movie and give the audience something that feels fresh. Sure, introduce it down the line but first movie should be about giving the audience something NEW not something that has been done to death.

Since Moretz isnt in the Xmen im guessing they can cast her as a nerd version of gwen. Sorta like the SSM version or Felicia hardy.

Honestly, I don't think Chloë would settle for the love interest. She's interested in interesting characters that will challenge her. That's why she'd make a good Felicia.

I don't care about Felicia. let her be the punk rock Ultimate Gwen.

The no romance stance feels as shortsighted as giving Peter's father Uncle Ben's role. You can put other elements in the forefront without omitting an important aspect of Peter's story.

I like how this recent CBR article bucks the trend as well as giving MJ her due.http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=59259

On MJ:

Mary Jane Watson is almost as important to the narrative of Spider-Man as Peter Parker himself. Between Pepper Potts, Jane Foster and Peggy Carter, Marvel has done a great job populating its cinematic universe with deeply layered female characters that do far more than complement the male heroes, and Mary Jane is arguably the most important non-powered woman in the Marvel Universe. Despite the success "ASM" had with Gwen Stacy, getting Mary Jane right this time is crucial to provide all the inspiration this new Spider-Man needs.

Chloë Grace Moretz as a young Felicia Hardy. Her kind of role. ;)
she more then proved that she can handle act in kick-ass/kick-ass 2, but, isn't she only like 5'5"? I always imagined Black Cat being much taller

also given her roles in the kick-ass movies, it might seem like a bit of a typecast

I think they're going to have him try to date Liz (and be unsuccessful) and maybe try and date Betty (and be successful) by the end. Just some little side plot and not "the be all end all romance of the century" like the last two series.

Mary Jane and Felicia Hardy. No falling in love, just crushes and flirting. Use them as meaningful supporting characters as well (MJ is his friend, Felicia sometimes helps him and sometimes doesn't)

Nobody said they were cutting it entirely, just not making it the main focus this time.

I feel MJ has to be involved even if it's just Aunt May introducing her at the end.
