I'd probably include Mary Jane, Gwen, and perhaps Liz Allan. Present them all as potential love interests without focusing on one just yet.
With "down playing" the romance, I get that if they're talking Civil War. But in his own solo film, I hope they don't ignore the soap opera elements of the character. The stories were just as much about Peter Parker as they were about Spider-Man.

I'm sorry, but no she can't.If Monica Belluci can be a bond girl at age 50,
then Mary Elizabeth Winstead should be able to play Mary Jane Watson at 30 yrs old.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead for Mary Jane Watson.![]()
I have NEVER understood the fandom obsession with MEW as MJ. And I actually think MEW is a great actress (phenomenal in Smashed). But she's never seemed right for that role to me at all. And now that she's older she's even more wrong for it than ever, imo.
You're probably right, but I just never saw that much resemblance to the comics version either, hence my confusion. I know there was one photo shoot of her that people kept re-using in manips in which she had kinda reddish hair, but that is literally the only time I've seen any resemblance to MJ from her. Is it just the fact that she had straight hair and bangs for a long time?I think it had more to do with her visually looking like the comic book more then anything else. That's usually what drives fan casting and fan support for a particular candidate , which is why they moan when the director casts an actor who isn't a one to one physical copy of the comic character ala Heath Ledger, Tobey Macguire, Michael Keaton, Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, etc.
I like MEW as an actress myself, but who knows if she would have fit MJ beyond just looking like the comic.

She doesn't look ANYTHING like a high-school aged teenage girl.

Age is just a number.
Monica Belluci is 50, and she's playing a bond girl.
Amy Adams is 39 years old, playing Lois Lane in "Man of Steel". In fact, she is 11 years older than Henry Cavill.
Therefore, I believe Mary Elizabeth Winstead will be fine in the role of MJ.

The rumor coming from Marvel is that they want to send Peter back to high school and put him in a movie that doesn't feature a love interest. IMO, that doesn't mean they are going to ignore the 'soap opera' aspects of his character or life, it just means they aren't going to use the love story angle as part of the plot. Which is fine with me since we've already had 5 straight movies where this was the main plot point--will they or won't they??
The writers can still build up the world around Peter and have several different female characters be developed over the course of a few movies. It'd be more interesting that way and not have the love story shoved down our collective throats once again. Though seeing him in pursuit of Liz or Betty or even Gwen again would be cool--give the audience something to chew on but don't make them choke.
Anything between this Peter and Gwen, will be nothing compared to what it was like with Andrew and Emma. Everyone will be expecting something just as electric and judging the new actors for it.
I wouldn't put them back together.
Yep. We're bound to see his high school chums in the first movie. But Marvel has no intention of having main focus on that, at least right away. I wouldn't be surprised if we see the first movie be in the format of the Ultimate Spider-Man tv show. Where he's in high school for about 5 minutes, then sucked into some kind of mission for SHIELD.

They really need to followUltimate andTSSM (which was very Ultimate inspired) if they wan to do HS Peter like they've never done before.
Most of the stories centered around his school life, and how being Spider-Man affected his relationships there, as well as at work and at home.
Fixed.
Keep that Ultimate crap out! Follow The Spectacular Spider-Man!t:
