Homecoming Who Should Be The Love Interest?

I want MJ, and I want her done right. I wouldn't mind her to be a little ultimate inspired
Have her in high School with her, make a her a little nerdy etc.

I'd probably include Mary Jane, Gwen, and perhaps Liz Allan. Present them all as potential love interests without focusing on one just yet.

Given that they've said they'll be downplaying the romance I doubt we'll get three love interests ;)

My choice. No love interest for film one. Film 2 introduce Black Cat. Seriously Felicia (coming from someone who doesn't read the comics) sounds like she could be a fascinating character. For starters we've already had the normal people love interests. Black Cat would actually be a part of Spiderman's world, and her relationship would first and foremost be with Spiderman, not Peter. She could play a major role in saving the day. And a world-wise, slightly older woman who sort of seduces Peter would be an interesting and different dynamic.

And there's such potential for complexity. You know on the surface she's this flirtatious, audacious cat burglar, who draws Peter in with her sensual charms. But beneath the surface she's a dark, hedonistic and volatile character. She's been through domestic violence and sexual abuse, she's gotten wound up in crime. All this has given her a huge hunger to prove herself, and a massive inferiority complex. Imagine what could happen if she gets her hands on the Venom symbiote for example? What would she do with that power? She has the potential to slip seamlessly from hero to villain, torn between wanting to corrupt Peter and wanting him to redeem her. And she easily has the potential to spin off into her own franchise.

With "down playing" the romance, I get that if they're talking Civil War. But in his own solo film, I hope they don't ignore the soap opera elements of the character. The stories were just as much about Peter Parker as they were about Spider-Man.

To me the leaked info seemed to imply they were talking about his solo film. He's probably going to get barely more than a cameo in CW, so talking about love interests in that is redundant. I wouldn't expect much if anything in the way of romance in Spidey 2017. Maybe a make-out session with a betty brant cameo or something, just to establish the teenage atmosphere. But no subplot. It's gotta be Black Cat, someone who can really be an integral part of the plot, and not a tacked on subplot or a damsel.

The rumor coming from Marvel is that they want to send Peter back to high school and put him in a movie that doesn't feature a love interest. IMO, that doesn't mean they are going to ignore the 'soap opera' aspects of his character or life, it just means they aren't going to use the love story angle as part of the plot. Which is fine with me since we've already had 5 straight movies where this was the main plot point--will they or won't they??

The writers can still build up the world around Peter and have several different female characters be developed over the course of a few movies. It'd be more interesting that way and not have the love story shoved down our collective throats once again. Though seeing him in pursuit of Liz or Betty or even Gwen again would be cool--give the audience something to chew on but don't make them choke.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead as MJ.

I remember a lot of fanboys here wanted her to be MJ. She was a hot favourite on the forums here to play MJ.

If Monica Belluci can be a bond girl at age 50,

then Mary Elizabeth Winstead should be able to play Mary Jane Watson at 30 yrs old.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead for Mary Jane Watson. :)

I'm sorry, but no she can't.
She doesn't look ANYTHING like a high-school aged teenage girl.

I have NEVER understood the fandom obsession with MEW as MJ. And I actually think MEW is a great actress (phenomenal in Smashed). But she's never seemed right for that role to me at all. And now that she's older she's even more wrong for it than ever, imo.

I think it had more to do with her visually looking like the comic book more then anything else. That's usually what drives fan casting and fan support for a particular candidate , which is why they moan when the director casts an actor who isn't a one to one physical copy of the comic character ala Heath Ledger, Tobey Macguire, Michael Keaton, Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, etc.

I like MEW as an actress myself, but who knows if she would have fit MJ beyond just looking like the comic.

You're probably right, but I just never saw that much resemblance to the comics version either, hence my confusion. I know there was one photo shoot of her that people kept re-using in manips in which she had kinda reddish hair, but that is literally the only time I've seen any resemblance to MJ from her. Is it just the fact that she had straight hair and bangs for a long time?

With a long red hair and the right wardrobe, I believe Mary Elizabeth Winstead will be able to pull off the role of a high school teenage girl convincingly. :yay:

Age is just a number.

Monica Belluci is 50, and she's playing a bond girl.

Amy Adams is 39 years old, playing Lois Lane in "Man of Steel". In fact, she is 11 years older than Henry Cavill.

Therefore, I believe Mary Elizabeth Winstead will be fine in the role of MJ.

I'm rooting for Liz Allan to be the main love interest, with an Ultimate/TSSM inspired Gwen as his best friend.

And at the end of the film (perhaps if their's a prom scene), or in the after credits, they can introduce MJ as a set up for the second film.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead could be a good Mary Jane..... if they were gonna have an adult Peter Parker. But they aren't. They are doing high school Peter..... again.

MEW is too old to play MJ. Maybe Betty Brant (ala TSSM, where she was considerably older than Peter), but not MJ.

Both those characters are adults though. It doesn't matter how old they are, their character's could be any age. MJ, or anyone else in Spidey's supporting cast for that matter are in High School. Can we stop casting 30 year olds as 16 year olds please? Preferably we get people actually in their teens to play Peter and his classmates. At the latest early 20s.

Gwen, but have Liz and Betty in there too.

Anything between this Peter and Gwen, will be nothing compared to what it was like with Andrew and Emma. Everyone will be expecting something just as electric and judging the new actors for it.

I wouldn't put them back together.

Yeah no Gwen some people on here think Garfield can't be topped, but really like actually Emma can't be topped as Gwen and their relationship can not be bettered.

Wouldn't put much romance if any in the first one anyway.

Yep. We're bound to see his high school chums in the first movie. But Marvel has no intention of having main focus on that, at least right away. I wouldn't be surprised if we see the first movie be in the format of the Ultimate Spider-Man tv show. Where he's in high school for about 5 minutes, then sucked into some kind of mission for SHIELD.

Part of high school "soap opera" for guys is girls. No, I don't want Pete to long for MJ like in the Raimi movies, but make him like Spectacular (there's that phrase again! :cwink:) and he doesn't know what he wants. And with being Spider-Man, it always interferes with his social life anyway. He can't even make up his mind between Liz or Betty, or maybe even Gwen. Not to mention the girl Aunt May wants to set him up with, with the great personality (shudder).

Matter of opinion. Didn't think the romance was all that great.

My biggest fear is they do go the Ultimate route.

Please, no no no no no no no no no no no no NO NO NO NO!!!

Things that may indicate that they might (and I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope they don't) is bringing back JK Simmons as JJJ, like Ultimate (although I am for JK's return) and Disney Infinity. Disney Infinity uses the movie versions of the Marvel heroes. And although Spider-Man has the web stripe going down his arms, Drake Bell does the voice. And Goblin and Ock are their Ultimate versions in the game.

While I wholeheartedly agree that it would be extremely difficult to top Gwen/Peter`s romance in the Webbverse, I wouldn`t mind seeing her again in a smaller role. Their romance may have been the heart of the TASM movies, but it could simply be a secondary plotline in here.

They really need to follow Ultimate and TSSM (which was very Ultimate inspired) if they wan to do HS Peter like they've never done before.

Most of the stories centered around his school life, and how being Spider-Man affected his relationships there, as well as at work and at home.

Fixed.

Keep that Ultimate crap out! Follow The Spectacular Spider-Man! :woot:

You do realize the fact that SSM took A LOT of inspiration from USM, right?

Gonna have to disagree with you man.
Emma may have been a good Gwen, but that doesn't mean she can't be topped
Same with every actor that has played any incarnation of a character.
I don't think I want to see Gwen as a love interest either, tho.
Maybe have Gwen move in with Peter and become like a sister to him (like USM)
