Who should direct VIII and IX?

A big no to Peter. He's not what he used to be.

As for Duncan...not now. We will wait and see how he does with Warcraft (BTW it's not called WoW anymore). I have high hopes because he is very talented. But let's see how he handles a bigger film first I'd say.

I still hope for my other two top picks for VIII and IX.

I hope for Alfonso for VIII, and Brad Bird for IX.
Holy crap, that is exactly what I was thinking of! :wow:

Episode VII-JJ Abrams.
Episode VIII-David Fincher.
Episode IX-Alfonso Cuaron.

Seriously, I'm really pushing for David Fincher to direct one of these films.

You mean he can't handle big scope adventures?

Eh no it's just he can't focus, has too much fluff in his films as of late. I don't think he has the same film making sensibilities he used to have when he was making LOTR. Not that he's bad, but there are much better out there now.

Deadline - ‘Star Wars’ Bombshell! Rian Johnson To Write, Direct Next Two Films

EXCLUSIVE: Rarely have I seen the revival of a film franchise stir so much fervor as Star Wars, among hot young filmmakers who grew up loving George Lucas’ original film trilogy. In a bombshell move, I’m told that Lucasfilm is making a deal with Looper writer-director Rian Johnson to write and direct Star Wars Episodes VIII and IX. Essentially, that means that the intention is for Johnson to take the baton from JJ Abrams, who has gotten the space franchise off the ground and is right now helming Episode VII. I don’t know too much more at this point, but it is in keeping with Disney and Lucasfilm’s strategy of entrusting the venerable franchise to the best and brightest writers and directors, including the spinoff films that are being directed by Chronicle‘s Josh Trank and Godzilla‘s Gareth Edwards.

The Hollywood Reporter - 'Star Wars: Episode VIII' Sets Director

The Force must be strong with Rian Johnson.

The Looper director is in talks with Lucasfilm to direct the next Star Wars film, Episode VIII, according to sources.

Sources say he will not direct the third film, Episode IX, but he is writing a treatment.

The Wrap - Rian Johnson to Write and Direct ‘Star Wars’ 8 — But Not 9
The director of “Brick” and “Looper” will write the treatment for the ninth film

Rian Johnson will write and direct the eighth “Star Wars” movie, inheriting the franchise from J.J. Abrams, according to two individuals with knowledge of the director's plans. Johnson will also write the treatment for the ninth movie, but he will not direct it.

Deadline Hollywood first reported that Johnson would write and direct the ninth movie, but both sources insist Johnson will only write the treatment.

Well, that answers that.

I don't think Cuaron should Direct Episode IX, i think he's better suited for middle films, or even the introductory films of a story, but for the climax, i think that you need a less "Personal" filmmaker who can give more "spetacle" without being too dumb. Since he's taking a hiatus from these kinds of film, i nominate him for Episode XI, which is probably some 15 years from being made.

Very surprised. I'm of two minds about it. I really want to see the original stuff Johnson does, but this will also likely help him get into a Nolan-type of position in Hollywood.

Great news! I've said it before and I'll say it again - I want Peter Jackson for the last one.

He won't get it, and I don't want him for Star Wars. That and I think Peter is worn out on franchises. They had to drag him to do The Hobbit. He seemed reluctant till the end. That and they seem to be going for the younger ones in Hollywood. His skill/style has just gone down hill for the past decade. Not terrible, but not as good as he once was.

But great to hear about Rian, amazing director. It's really interesting how much "fresh blood" they are going for in these films. Young independent directors, full of imagination. I think it's cool that it's pushing the next generation of film-maker. Give them a chance to shine.

Keep Peter Jackson the **** away from Star Wars.

But then who will drag out the Boba Fett saga for three unnecessary follow-ups?

The OT had three different directors. I kind of like the idea actually:

-Episode VII-JJ Abrams.
-Episode VIII-Rian Johnson.
-Episode IX-Alfonso Cuaron (my #1 choice). or Brad Bird if they cannot get Alfonso.

I'd be down if Cuaron did IX. If they weren't also on board as writers, I'd be down to get Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Kosinski or Ridley Scott on for the last one. Again, as long as they aren't writing - and the effects would have to be majorly practical.

Or hell, I'd be down if Nolan did the last one
