The Rise of Skywalker Who Should Direct Episode IX?

Welp, I think we all pretty much knew it was either going to be Rian or JJ.

My default setting for a while has been expecting Episode VIII to be the best of the trilogy, due to VII being a promising start that left a lot of unexplored potential, and knowing that Rian Johnson was doing VIII and Trevorrow was doing IX. So nothing has really changed in that regard. The franchise is in safe hands with JJ...it's still more of a relief that Trevorrow isn't doing it than any real excitement about JJ coming back that I'm currently feeling. Terrio meanwhile is a wild card for me. Not sure what to make of his involvement just yet.

I totally understand why Rian declined the offer to direct IX, but it's definitely worth noting that he was offered the job first. That's good news for the quality of TLJ.

While I do like TFA, I do have some reservations about JJ coming back. I'm hoping that now that he's relieved of the pressure of reviving the franchise and paying homage to Episode IV, he'll come back to it refreshed and hungry to pick up the threads Rian left and see these characters through to the end of their journeys. I think it's definitely more than fair to say that, regardless of where you stand on the whole "TFA was a reboot" thing, JJ had a huge hand in shaping this new batch of characters. So it is fitting in a sense that he's the guy to tell the concluding chapter of their story. He just has a very different task than he did with TFA, he can't just mystery box it and walk away again. He's got to deliver a concluding chapter that builds on what he and Rian and have done in a satisfying way and perhaps indeed serves as a conclusion to a 9 film saga (at least for now). Here's hoping his batteries are recharged and he's up for the challenge.

A guy like Fede Alvarez is someone far more interesting to see what he can do with these characters. JJ is a safe choice tho. Kennedy needs to poop without a headache.

Abrams may be a safe choice, but he's still the same guy who made the best SW movie since Empire. The fact that he also happens to not be Colin Trevorrow is definitely a plus too.

I think that both ROTJ and ROTS are better movies on a technical level.

He might be a safe choice, but Lucasfilm has proven that's exactly what they want right now.

Also, before anyone gets angry, it's not necessarily a bad thing. I like Force Awakens.

Screw it I am just going to come out and say it. ROTS was much better than TFA and RO and ANH.:o That was a good emotional movie. I really felt for Anakin and understood why he kind of turned to the dark side.

ROTS is my third favorate star wars film.yes it is better than TFA and RO.

of course saying you like anything from lucas post empire will get attacked so fast.the reason why anakin turned were understood.kylo ren i have no idea.as much as people critize anakin's portrayal in prequels kylo ren is worse.

rots makes you when you watch all of films together to cheer for vader finally turning on emperor in ROTJ though if not for obi wan winning their duel he may have done himself.

ROTS got to me on emontional level.which is why i refuse to jump on the lucas hating bandwagon.

So love has blinded you?

That would be George Lucas, writer/director of Revenge of the Sith.

So.....do you also "understand" his need to slaughter a bunch of innocent 6 year olds because he's pissed at some adults?

That's because you had 5 movies that provided exposition on Vader/Anakin. Ren has had one movie which also had to introduce a host of other new characters. Did you really expect everything to be spoonfed to you in the span of two hours? Ren was better in scenes where he didn't even speak than what we got from Anakin in the entire prequel trilogy.

I do, it's because Mace Windu wanted to kill the Darth Sidius Ani warned of instead of putting him through trial.

Nope, not stupid, not stupid at all, I believe it, I can understand. Yes, yes, I mean yes....

Oh bloody plot convenience, to the fiery pits of Tartarus with it.

Well, at least until Rian blows our socks off in December. :woot:

Terrio is involved in this? We know what would spur the ultimate redemption of Kylo now.

Spoilers: Rey and Kylo's moms have the same first name. Best friends forever.

If you think TFA was the worst film of all time you must consider Episodes I-III Oscar worthy. Then again, you did just recommend Lucas to return to the franchise he nearly destroyed.

I'm disappointed by this uninspired pick, but it's still better than Trevorrow.

I liked the prequels 1000 times more than TFA.

If I was offered a billion Euro in return for watching TFA again, I'd refuse.

I'd rather have 5 teeth pulled out then watch that film again.

I will eventually watch The Force Awakens again, but it definitely is the worst film in the Saga thus far... at least for me.

Glad you agree TFA is awful. Here's some advice, don't watch it. It will just make you angry.

^ I I liked TFA somewhat; I just didn't like it much as I wanted to, and its flaws are significant enough to force it below any of the other films.

I did say elsewhere/earlier that I would boycott the franchise going forward if Lucasfilm let's Abrams make another SW film that exists solely as an exercise in personal viewpoint satisfaction, but won't completely make that decision until at least next year.

It's hard for me to take someone seriously who honestly thinks TPM or AOTC is better than TFA. Despite being a complete homage to ANH, the film still manages to introduce lovable characters with a great balance of practical and digital effects. TPM and AOTC managed to take acclaimed actors and make them wooden stand-ins with green screen backdrops.

And it's hard for me to take someone seriously when they spout opinions like the bolded.

I mean...It's not surprising to read that when you see "who" holds that opinion.

Honestly, I'm considering boycotting Episode 9 at this point, at least in theaters. I don't go watch Michael Bay's stuff because he only knows how to make one movie and I know what to expect from him, but why do I make an exception with Abrams Star Wars films? It's kind of pointless for me to complain about Abrams, and then go pay money to see the movie. Unless it looks like Abrams is stepping up his game for Ep. 9, this one may be a DVD movie for me.

I'm going to give Lucasfilm and Abrams a chance to prove me wrong in regards to Episode IX - pre-release - before I make a decision on whether or not to permanently walk away from a continued cinematic association with a franchise I've loved since I first saw The Empire Strikes Back via home video on my 8th birthday (Thanksgiving Day 1988).
