Welp, I think we all pretty much knew it was either going to be Rian or JJ.
My default setting for a while has been expecting Episode VIII to be the best of the trilogy, due to VII being a promising start that left a lot of unexplored potential, and knowing that Rian Johnson was doing VIII and Trevorrow was doing IX. So nothing has really changed in that regard. The franchise is in safe hands with JJ...it's still more of a relief that Trevorrow isn't doing it than any real excitement about JJ coming back that I'm currently feeling. Terrio meanwhile is a wild card for me. Not sure what to make of his involvement just yet.
I totally understand why Rian declined the offer to direct IX, but it's definitely worth noting that he was offered the job first. That's good news for the quality of TLJ.
While I do like TFA, I do have some reservations about JJ coming back. I'm hoping that now that he's relieved of the pressure of reviving the franchise and paying homage to Episode IV, he'll come back to it refreshed and hungry to pick up the threads Rian left and see these characters through to the end of their journeys. I think it's definitely more than fair to say that, regardless of where you stand on the whole "TFA was a reboot" thing, JJ had a huge hand in shaping this new batch of characters. So it is fitting in a sense that he's the guy to tell the concluding chapter of their story. He just has a very different task than he did with TFA, he can't just mystery box it and walk away again. He's got to deliver a concluding chapter that builds on what he and Rian and have done in a satisfying way and perhaps indeed serves as a conclusion to a 9 film saga (at least for now). Here's hoping his batteries are recharged and he's up for the challenge.
