Guardians of the Galaxy Who should direct?

These things never work, it just makes fans feel important. It sucks, but Gunn is gone.

Along with this franchise.
Well GOTG was already going to end after the 3rd one anyways. We were just going to get more cosmic characters like spin offs.

I speaking specifically about Vol. 3. It'll never be what it could have been with Gunn at the helm, at least for me. I'm sure it'll be fine and Feige will find a suitable replacement, but the soul will be gone imho.

As for what happens after, your guess is as good as mine.

Yeah I don't think any film was gonna get a 4th film but I'm sure Gunn's influence was appreciated in the larger scope of the cosmic universe. Would really have come in handy depending on what comes from the F4 storylines.

They can just end the trilogy with Vol 3, but introduce the likes of Silver Surfer in it and Galactus. That should get people excited. Perhaps even throw in concepts like the Negative Zone.

They can pay him for the script, use the script and then he can "waive billing" and not be credited. Everybody wins. He gets money that he might need. MCU gets to use the script and keep the movie mostly on schedule and the fans will get his trilogy with another director at the helm.

Then all they need to do is bill whoever comes in and does the re-writes/polishes.

I'm surprised that people want Taika Waititi as a replacement. Love Ragnaok or hate it, it's a vastly different movie than Guardians. A lot of people just see "bright colors and space-stuff" and think "it's like Guardians". It only resembles Guardians superficially.

Guardians' humor is scripted in advanced and timed. Ragnarok's humor is ad-libbed and improvised.

Guardians' visual style is mostly realistic designs and practical effects. A lot of grit. Ragnarok's is much more cartoony and exaggerated. Less of an emphasis on photo-realism and creating a "lived-in world".

Guardians is influenced by late '70s/early '80s Star Wars-style space-operas. (Semi-serious, with the orchestral score and whatnot). Ragnarok is influenced by later '80s Flash Gordon-style sci-fi (much more over-the-top and cornball, complete with synth.)

I just don't see the two as compatible. Personally, I vastly prefer Guardians' style (although I have come to respect what Waititi was trying to do). I have a feeling a Taika Waititi GOTG would just come across as a cheap knockoff (I mean, the style he's mimicking is essentially a cheap knockoff of the style Gunn's mimicking). Maybe Taika Waititi could mimic Gunn's style, but I'm not convinced.

Didn't marvel meet up with the guys from super troopers recently. They could almost be a shoe in...

If he wasn't currently busy with the Metal Gear movie, I'd say John Vogh Roberts. He did a fantastic job with Kong: Skull Island.

I have to agree that the two aren't interchangeable to as much of a degree as people seem to think. I think the Guardians films utilize crass/direct humor mixed in with hyperkinetic action while Thor: Ragnarok is also over the top but more ad-libbed straight faced kind of humor interwoven with epic action.

I think a lot of people mentioned Taika because he's wacky and could channel Gunn's sensibilities somewhat. Plus the fact he has a relationship with Marvel which would make things easier for them.

What are the russos up to after avengers 4?

Oh yeah I forgot about that. That could be interesting.

I mean, just because we’re just learning about Gunn it doesn’t mean marvel or Disney haven’t known this was going to happen for a while and were already having conversations

I'm one of those who wanted James Gunn to finish his trilogy. But MCU didn't have any director sticking with a character or team film as a director for three movies.

Marvel are indeed developing more for the Cosmic aspect of the MCU, but I don't think the Guardians are going to end. I thought Gunn said some (or maybe he said all) of the characters would change but there would be a team.

I also agree that Ragnarok and the GotG films are very different. They clearly have surface-level similarities (comedic, brightly coloured, cosmic, lots of larger than life characters), but the tone and comedic sensibilities of the two are indeed very different. Gunn's tighter, more scripted comedy is definitely more crass and in a sense, rather more cynical and mean-spirited (I'm not saying this as a bad thing though, I love both GotG films and find them hilarious), whereas Waititi's humour is lighter, more ad-libbed and natural, physical (in a slapstick sense) and also much more absurdist in style. Ragnarok's comedy reminds me more of absurdist Brit comedies like Monty Python and the like because it plays on the whole 'comic books are inherently absurd and crazy, so let's just go with it and go mad'. In all, I much prefer Waititi's humour, but I also appreciate what Gunn brought to the GotG films.

I personally think the Russos would be the best option to take over GotG 3 right now, purely because they can obviously handle the cosmic scale perfectly, they already have experience working with these characters and actors and I think they would ultimately respect and stick to Gunn's vision for the franchise.

Taika's the safest bet. Throw Thor and Korg in the mix and let the mad genius go to work. 93% fresh RT score with critics calling it the funniest MCU yet again. These are actors, they'll adjust to a different type of humor rather quickly. Thor went from an adjustment of almost no humor to Ragnarok Thor so I think the Guardians will be just fine under Taika. And don't underestimate the heart and poignant moments he can deliver as well. Although u see only a slice in Ragnarok with Thor and Odin, there's a good chunk to be found in his earlier works.

Russos are a great choice as well, but I would rather save them to kick start a fresh property (F4 or X-men etc) for which where their interest lies by the looks of it anyway.

I liked Thor: Ragnarok, but I agree with those who say that Taika Waititi's style of comedy is very different than that of James Gunn's. Honestly, in this case, I don't think the style of GOTG should change. Thor desperately needed refreshed, with a new take; I don't think the Guardians do. If chosen Waititi should bend his style from Ragnarok's, not the other way around. And besides the Avengers, I would rather see the Guardians separate from the other characters as in the past.

Who else? Perhaps someone fresh. I don't think Lord and Miller are going near another Disney franchise film after the Solo debacle. Yes, GOTG is an actual space comedy (unlike Solo), but the stint cost Disney millions since they had to reshoot 70% of the film and inflate the budget beyond reasonable control. The Russos did well, but Gunn wrote some dialog and chose the intro song, so I'm not sure how much was them and how much was Gunn.

Still hoping they at least use his script, though, for story purposes.

There's absolutely no chance of Disney rehiring Gunn, even with thousands of names on a petition. It would look very bad for them to do that.

Maybe someone else will start a petition to fire him again. Then what? Because there are more signatures there, they fire him again?

No, they tell them politely to bog off. Positivity should always triumph over negativity.

Lord and Miller was my first thought. Then I thought that Disney should stick it to the right-wing by getting Rian Johnson to do it.
