The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Who would be the best MJ?

No Margot? lol To each his own I guess. I like Alex a lot. Having her in the role would be great.

I have to see pics/manips of her with red hair I guess :)
She does look beautiful enough, and she has both the topmodel and girl next door vibe

Am I the only one who thinks Margot Robbie looks too old for MJ? I know she's only 23 but she looks like she's in her 30's

^ lololol! The fanboy double standards are killing me here! :lmao:

Even if she did look "too old" (she doesn't), how do you reconcile that with Andrew Garfield who very much looks to be in his late twenties?

First of all, I'm not a fanboy, I'm a girl.

I think Margot is absolutely gorgeous, I'm just saying imo, she looks older than 23 and trust me, I'm not the first person who has said this. Whenever her age is revealed in news articles, the comment section is usually full of "what??!! she can't be 23!" type comments

BTW, I don't think Andrew looks like he's in his late 20's, I think he looks like he's in his early 20's. A LOT of people are genuinely shocked when they find out he's 30.

My mistake. I just see this sort of thing around here so often.

Put her in some more youthful clothes, a less "mature" hairstyle, and makeup and she would look much younger. People are fooled by this stuff all the time. After all, that's the exact approach they took for Garfield. While he does look youthful, looking at his face, he never looked a day under 27 to me.

A few more Jane pics...

^ Oh Jane Levy. Forever plagued by the Emma Stone comparisons. She's very beautiful and talented (no doubt about it), and I'm sure she could bring a certain level of spunk and attitude to the role, but then there's Stone, and that's a problem for some.

^This. It's all in the makeup and the styling.

It's not like Andrew looks like this anymore:

Today, imo he's looking much older than the 18/19 yr old that he's playing in TASM2:

But that's besides the point. I don't think Margot looks old, nor do I believe that the audience would think that this woman:

is way too old for this man:

I posted my attempts at some manips a few pages back. They weren't the best. I'll see if I can make some more sometime soon. :yay:

I think the comparisons to Emma Stone are inconsequential. It's not like they're both going to be made to look alike in the film (and chances are, they wouldn't even be acting opposite one another) but Emma and Jane sound and act completely different.

It's like all the backlash poor Shailene Woodley got because people thought she looked like she was related to Andrew Garfield.

Putting looks aside, the thing with Jane is, she's a phenomenal talent. Emma Stone set the bar high with Gwen. There are hundreds of pretty faces you could cast as MJ, but chances are most of them won't measure up. With Jane, I have no doubt, she could act the hell out of the role and make the audience fall in love with Mary Jane. She could show us why Peter loves this girl so much. When it comes to charm and charisma, it comes effortlessly to her.

Just to give you a little insight, as to why I like her for the role. :)

^That likeability factor is something that any actress portraying this character definitely needs to have, and it's something that I've seen in actresses like Jane Levy, Shailene Woodley, Margot Robbie, and Alex Breckenridge. The fact that Levy apparently would really love to play the character is also a plus. I can understand why you really like her for the role. If she was on Sony's list when casting TASM2, I'm sure that they'll consider her again if they need to recast. May the best MJ win!

Here's hoping! :)

Fancasting is fun and I get a kick out of it, but getting the character right is the most important thing to me and casting is crucial. I have no idea who'll end up as our MJ, but I just want the right girl and I'm hopeful they'll find her (or have found her).

We need a great MJ! :awesome:

Took the time last night to go through the trailer frame by frame. Can someone please tell me why there was this half a second of Shaelene (seen from behind), while in a coffee shop, watching a car crash onto another?

If these scenes have been, as we've been told, cut, they why use them in the trailer?

Maybe Shaelene will still be in the movie, but as nothing more than a glorified extra, showing a waitress reacting to the devastation caused by Electro. No lines. Not even being seen from the front.

Or, they used it in the trailer, but it won't be on screen.

I'm on board with Margot Robbie.

It's okay if she looks older than him anyway since MJ can have a more sophisticated look than Peter.

Maybe the shot was too expensive not to use it. And it does look cool I must say :)

This right here is what worries me. Gwen, in all honesty, wasn't all that interesting in the original comics. Sure, later writers put more effort into her, but in the classic comics she was a pretty bland love interest. As such, it wasn't the difficult to come up with MJ as a character meant to threaten the cliche romance between Peter and Gwen. However, Emma Stone had to go and be ridiculously amazing at being Gwen, and now I have no idea how they're going to top that with MJ. And let's face it, since we all know Peter eventually winds up with MJ, they do kind of have to top Gwen. Finding an actress capable of that is not going to be easy.

In a parallel universe, Emma Stone played Mary Jane in the Spider-Man reboot and gave us the definitive portrayal. :wow:

I'm still glad we got her as Gwen, though. It worked out for the best.

This has me worried a bit too. Gwen stacy was pretty bland in the original comics and Emma's portrayal has added an extra layer of charisma and personality to the otherwise vanilla girl next door. While it does help maintain interest in the Peter-Gwen relationship in the short run, it could ultimately end up undermining MJ in the long run.

It's not necessarily about one topping the other. Hopefully, audiences will be able to love both for very different reasons.

Emma Stone was the obvious choice for a teenage/highschool Mary Jane back in 2010. I believe that she thought that she was auditioning for MJ before a name was attatched to the part. However, Gwen Stacy is an interesting change of pace for Emma, and she's doing a fantastic job. A few years back, I don't think anyone (excluding die-hard fans) really cared about Gwen (if they even knew who she was), but now everyone loves Gwen, and that's mostly because of Emma Stone.

That being said, I'm really hoping that whoever finally gets the part will prove to be a billion times more MJ than Emma Stone could have ever been. I'm hoping that said actress will have our jaws dropping and will forever silence the majority of the "they should have just cast Emma Stone as Mary Jane" comments. Casting is crucial!

Btw, I really get a kick out of fancasting too!:woot:

I kind of have to agree with the "she should have been cast as Mary Jane" crowd, but that's hindsight speaking. I don't think anyone could have predicted we would all love her this much. I certainly didn't. I am so torn on her impending death because it's one of the most interesting things about Spider-man's history and it's something Raimi left out, but at the same time I am going to have a hard time seeing Peter lose Gwen when Emma had to go and make me love her character this much! UGH. Damn you Emma. Damn you and your adorable face and incredible acting skills!

Emma Stone sort of IS Mary Jane in real life. Like she sort of looks and acts just like her. Definitely exactly like the animated versions of her. But I guess playing Gwen she get's to be science-y which is different for her, because Emma had never played anyone like that before. So it's more like acting than just playing herself, which she has been said to do in many of her other movies.

But I agree that she would have made a good Mary Jane.

Emma gives off a good looking dork vibe, which is something I've never seen MJ as. There should be a level of unattainability to MJ, even if it's just through her sheer presence as a beauty.

There are definitely facets of MJ in Emma Stone's personality (the spunk, the attitude, the sense of humor, etc) and some of the other characters that she has played, that were a good indication that she could have made a fantastic Mary Jane Watson. As I said before, she would have been the obvious choice a few years back. However, I disagree with the sentiment that Emma Stone = Mary Jane. They set the bar really high, but I think that Sony can find someone even better suited for MJ than Emma, and who knows? Maybe they already have.

edit: Btw, if there's anyone who is the 'real Mary Jane Watson', it would be Ann-Margret: the character's inspiration.

"Swik!"...

"Snap!!"...

"Did it. Spider powers, I love you!"...

Oops!

"You killed the woman I love!"

Actually Andrew, I mean Peter, you did!

Hey everyone! Hope you've all been having a Happy holiday season!

I just saw "the Wolf of Wall Street" and although the film was incredibly vulgar and graphic, I gotta say that Margot Robbie's performance as Leo's opinionated and manipulative second wife from Long Island was probably one the film's best aspects. She was absolutely fantastic in the relatively short-lived role, and she's been receiving tons of great notices for what probably has been her big breakout performance. Seriously, this scene-stealing Aussie actress could probably teach Jennifer Lawrence a thing or two about mastering different American dialects.

I think Margot just about encompasses almost every characteristic that I've ever imagined any actress playing a live action MJ having, and I firmly believe that, if given the opportunity, she could easily bring our favorite feisty party girl to life. I'm no casting director, but if there's any actress that can out-MJ Emma Stone while bringing something entirely different to the role, I think its Margot.

Btw, if she looks a little overly bronze in that last pic, it's because she had to continually get spray tans every weekend to accurately portray the sun loving "Duchess of Bay Ridge". Talk about commitment. lol

Moving away from which actress could make a great replacement MJ (since Shailene could very well return), I had an interesting thought regarding MJ's occupation in this franchise. Clearly MJ was going to be working as a waitress in TASM2. Whether or not that is still the case for TASM3 is up in the air. Also no one knows whether or not Webb had planned to turn MJ into an aspiring actress/model (which would have basically been a retread of Raimi's MJ) or an aspiring journalist (which would basically have turned her into Lois Lane). I was thinking that instead of having MJ work as a waitress in a sandwich shop, having MJ work as a bartender (the minimum age in NYC is 18) would fit MJ's streetwise personality more naturally. Also, instead of aspiring to be an actress, maybe she can aspire to open up her own nightclub, possibly part-time modeling to earn some extra money to help realize those dreams. I think it would be an interesting twist on comic book canon that would make perfect sense and would help further differentiate Raimi's MJ from Webb's MJ. Any other ideas?

What's the difference between a waitress and a bartender? It's more about her personality so if she is that type of 'street-wise' person, either one of those jobs would be good. The next movie should more than likely still have Peter in college so MJ could also potentially be at the same university. I would expect her to have a job, if any, that's somewhat in line with a typical job for a student. Something lower level, possibly an intern.
