why aren't people licensed to have children?

here's what you do...when a person has a child, after the child is born they are given a test that covers basic IQ, and hypothetical situations involving the raising of a child...the test is administered partly in writing, partly by speaking while the testee is hooked up to a polygraph machine...if they fail the test, the child is taken away and given to social services while the parent is required to take classes on raising a child (just basic stuff, like not letting timmy play with your ak-47, etc.)...when the class is completed, they are again administered the test...if they pass the child is returned to them, if not, it is given up permanently for adoption and the parent is sterilized.

see how quick that goes from sensible idea to orwellian?

Half the Hype would be in Social Services custody under this idea.

well, like i said (or maybe i just thought), it's easy to say all of that... but... to give someone a simple test (i mean honestly, anything) would be better than just letting anyone have kids.

i don't know how the heck you would have this kind of thing monitored, but when you can have people monitored for child porn, then you'd think it wouldn't be too hard, right?

Well, we'll start by putting a mandatory GPS monitoring chip in the tip of your penis (yes, you get to be the first one). If you attempt unauthorized sex a SWAT team will come crashing through the windows and relieve you of your offending penis with a machete and a cauterizing iron. Then you won't ever try that again.

Am I the only one who's weirded out by the thought of a SWAT team watching through the window as I'm having sex?

While I agree with Jag, it would be impossible to police, I am in favor of requiring parental education classes in high school and as part of getting a marriage licence. I meet WAY too many people who don't have the first clue of how to be a parent.

^Yes,education needs to be more readily available. So few are aware of the many resources attainable in their community,so I suppose also a better way to rally up those that are desperately in need of some parenting skills/knowledge.

Let's do it like Starship Troopers in which people need to be a citizen to have a kid, and that of course means serving in the military. Wait, that would suck...

Umm... okay hitler. If ya ask me the need to have a license in order to drive a vehicle is contradictory to our supposedly 'free' nation. But a humans ability to create more humans is a god given right and no man or woman is more entiltled to certify this than you yourself. How ever I do believe that some people shouldn't be parents... but ya know.

okay, i know that's a loaded question, and i'd be lying if i said i had all the answers... but, people are liscenced for all kinds of "important" things everyday, and having a kid is arguably the most important thing one can do with his or her life... any two redneck, backwoods (for example) people can have a kid, and raise it to be a racist, or terrorist, or whatever.... when people are liscenced to be things like drivers, or carriers of weapons, or sexual predators, why aren't they liscenced to be the most important thing in the world?

i get that it's every person's right to have a kid, and pass on their own DNA, and that that's just a natural part of life, but that doesn't make it okay...

so... discuss:
You would none too much appreciate having to get a license, when you are ready to have kids.

how would they know by location?

" sir, the subject is on the move! no wait...he's back where he was, no wait.... ah dammit!"

I know what you mean, having children is something instintive. They dont care if its right or wrong, even if they cant take care of the child. In some parts of the world, your only allowed to have one child..due to over population.Indeed i do think in the future, some may not be allowed to have children.

Errr...my confusion was that you said that there was no research to support the claim that I made about that and then supported it yourself.

So they don't have a problem because the DON'T try to regulate and enforce a draconian legal stance on drugs? Perhaps this is not a good example for you to refer to with your proposal to DO regulate and enforce a draconian legal stance on child birth.

Part of the war on illegal immigration and illegal workers involves regulating industry. It's expensive and it obviously has not worked. Again, not the best of examples because it illustrates exactly what would happen if we tried to control and regulate child birth; people would do it anyway and there would be no real way to stop them.

That's something that's important to you, not necessarily to everyone. While I won't disagree that many people who shouldn't have children do just that, this is America where freedom is a very important value to all of us and quite frankly, your idea tramples all over those very fundamental ideals that this country was founded on (not to mention it being completely ripe for abuse, misuse and corruption). Perhaps you should consider moving to China where the laws around child birth might be still a little loose for your liking but closer to what you seem to want so badly than we have here in America.

The Irony of you telling him all of this.....?

His name is Mr. Credible. :woot:

The fact that you have to go through a class, prove your retention and comprehension of the information, and then obtain a license to drive a car or own a gun, or sell beer, ale, cider and Zimas.....but you don't have to do all that before CREATING A HUMAN LIFE OUT OF NOTHING.....is,...I'm going to go as far as to say, the most insane, ******ed thing about society.

Effed up people have sex for the wrong reasons, get pregnant for the wrong reasons, raise their children in effed up ways, those children grow up into effed up people, who attract effed up people, they have sex for the wrong reasons, procreate for the wrong reasons, and raise their own little effed up people.

And that is THE main reason the world is so effed up today, and has ALWAYS been effed up.

Creating a human life is everyone's God-given, or if you like, nature-given right. That's what we're here to do. Whilst, of course, the decision to have a child must be taken with the utmost considertion and preparation, to place any legal restriction, any enforced judgement on who should and shouldn't be allowed to be a parent, is a truly appalling idea.

do I sense a 16 year old who cant pass his test? aw, so cute...dont worry little buddy, you'll get it one of these times

I think we should have a three child policy in America. :o

yeah, actually i would appreciate it. that's why i started the thread, thank you.

like i said, i'm not asking for a full on policing of baby-making or anything, but some kind of monitoring would be great. and i realize that it raises many more questions, like abortions for women who don't meet the criteria and whatever else, but honestly, when the world is overpopulated as it is, isn't it time we did something about this issue? even just a step in the right direction would be benefiial to the entire human race.

people are licenced to drive vehicles beause it is dangerous, artard. same as having a kid. it's dangerous, if you don't know what you're doing, which most parents don't.

and yes, maybe it is a "god-given" right to have a child, but i think we need to stop being a country that hides behind a religion for all of its decisions. that's both stupid and lazy. what worked 2,000 years ago isn't going to work in modern america. simple as that.

i hate to say this but i completely agree with this.
i think that in the least people should be drug tested when they're thinking about having a child.
and i think that tube ties should be mandatory after a womans third abortion.
not a non reversable surgery, just something that will make it a decision when they DO get pregnant.

My personal opinion is that all people should obtain a license for having kids. Purely because the breed of chavs, people with no regard for anyone other than themselves is growing. We need to stop them now!

i hate kids.
that movie Children of Men looks like a Fairy Tale to me.:o

that's an awesome idea!

why not have men freeze some sperm, then get a visectomy (sp?) then, they can only have kids when they deem it appropriate?

boom.

problem solved... or at least, one step closer.
