Why the Hate for this Movie?

honestly, i'm tired of seeing the words realistic, serious, and dark in the DB forums. i understand trying to make it more like those words but the problem is that it doesn't look like they're accomplishing those things. Hellboy 2 is a great example of how Dragon Ball could've been a dark, realistic movie without taking the fantastical elements. that movie takes place in OUR world, yet the variety and amount of creatures and non-human entities in HB2 rival most Star Wars flicks....and all of that was done with a budget of under $100 million.

i'm tired of seeing everyone make excuses for why Fox went the route that they did and it's really disturbing to see much of the fan community stick up for such a half-assed effort. you shouldn't reward/defend slack, you should reward/defend excellence.
well hellboy doenst make a lot of money. so if FOX looked HB they thought maybe that this can not work.

but the director from HB movies for DB......it makes sense

I agree with you on 20th Century Fox total lack of understanding on how to manage adaptations, but Dragonballs fantastical elements are far more ridiculous and frankly annoying in comparison to the fantasy elements of the Hellboy franchise that have depth and interesting back stories (ex: Puar and Oolong going to shape shifting school, what a captivating and compelling back story that is.:whatever:).

I think the people who want a dark and realistic adaptation need to go back and rewatch DB again.

That's exactly why they should have hired Guillermo Del Toro to direct this movie.

well, i'll be one of the first to tell someone that DB shouldn't be a dark, serious movie so i can see why Fox didn't take that route.

omg....if Guillermo Del Toro directed a Dragon Ball movie i would $#!+ my pants.

oh yeah i certainly agree, but that doesn't mean that the fantastical elements in the live action movie have to be ridiculous or annoying. if there NEEDED to be a sidekick creature then they could've just combined Puar and Oolong into one character and make him/her a chameleon type creature that can replicate many different sounds as opposed to straight making them shape shifters.

That's exactly why they should have hired Guillermo Del Toro to direct this movie.
considering Fox likes to SAVE money, it would've made perfect sense...but i'm sure Fox would've just ended up frustrating Guillermo.

Guillermo Del Toro would work. he would IMO make a world iwht talking animals and very faithfull look of clothes and characters.
would it make money? IMO not. but one movie is enough IMO.

i personal wouldnt use animals. i just wouldnt . i think that DB is about goku. so a human looking alien. i would focus on him. i would maybe tease in the movie that its very fantastical and has some monsters. i would focus on him and the main characters that are normal looking. citys would be futuristic. the movie would be a mix between speed racer and 300 in LOOK. i would hav ejokes in the movie. i would make sure from the beginning that this is a movie with intense action scenes and some humor. i would nto try to sell it as serious. i think a big mistake in SR was the combination of over the top jokes, scenes and then dramatic scenes. you can not have both IMO.
a lot of people even had problem in hancock how it was going from a comedy to a drama.
in a stylistic would i can have fantasy stylistic fights with no logic.

i'd say our ideas of what a live action DB should've been are pretty much on the same level.

There is no dark and realistic DB anywhere.

DB shouldn't be made period. Not everything translates to live action nor should it.

Guillermo Del Toro wouldn't make a movie like this. And he probably wouldn't do it for Fox.

Just one of the crucial problems I see with adapting Dragonball is that no matter who Fox put in charge of directing and writing they would have made some changes here and there (angering and isolating some fans) no matter what (maybe to a lesser degree than this Fox managed adaptation). Some franchises in my opinion are far to fantastically complex for it even to look good on the big screen witout making changes which causes all this online turmoil.

What made Dragonball fun and exiting to watch and read were the platforms that were used to tell the story (animation and a graphic novel) and films sometimes makes us question the events going on. In the forum that is animation and comic books (manga) we let it slide by.

So maybe not adapting Dragonball would have been the best decsion to save everyone from this ongoing conflict. Like TheVileOne said certain pieces of literature just shouldn't be adapted just because so much is loss and changed from the original work that it becomes almost unrecognizble and silly when its turned into film (Even if the director adapts it panel for panel).

of course not everyone is going to like a DB movie regardless of how it turned out. TDK is a prime example of some people not liking a movie that the majority of the fan community loved BY FAR. however, i think that a faithful and coherent live action DB movie could've been successful if it were treated with respect. it would be a fine line to walk, but it could've been done.

i still think that soem changes would have to be made.

i am just throwing it out: no naked goku

I sure hope so! I think the way Fox has been managing this film has left me skeptical if a Dragonball film would even work without gaining such a negative consensus.

Batman in my opinion is far more easier to get right than get wrong. Dragonball on the other hand is a franchise that even the greatest directors can mess up heavily. The fact that I never heard of a bidding war between studios for the film rights makes me wonder if the other studios realized that turning this franchise into a film would serve more as a hassle that would enrage fans and ignite frustrations within the studio on how to adapt such an 'elaborate' storyline.

oh definitely, changes would have to be made. i'm all for changes, as long as they make sense. we can't have Goku patting everyone's privates or that might send out the wrong impression to young folks.

I agree. When there is no bidding war for a property or script then that means that most of the studios have no interest in the property or they feel it is way too challenging to make a movie of it.

Fox for some reason likes to get hold on extremely tough properties to make a movie of. X-men is a hard property to make a movie of and they did fine though frankly speaking I was never satisfied with the movies. F4 also is hard to turn into live action. DB is the most challenging yet they are making it and we can see how it is turning out to be. I think to me fox tries to make movies of tough properties while other studios get franchises that are easy to turn into a movie and then make fans happy and hence have better reputation. Then there are some properties that no matter how many changes you make fans and internet geeks don't mind because well the have a mind set to like the movie. So they think positive. Transformers is the best example.

DB on the other hand is getting nothing but hate from all the internet film sites etc. No one cares about it.

you know what should not be changed in 2009?
-piccolo being green. after 100 of monsters all possible colors a green piccolo would not look strange.
-goku having strange looking hair.
- Yun-Fat Chow look. they casted an actor that looked in POTC exactly like Roshi. yet in DB he looks just like himself. its an insult.
-Bulma having blue hair. its 2008. when i go outside in the city i see 100% a girl with red, purple or maybe even green hair. dark blue hair is not unrealistic. its actually normal for a raver. so if in out realistic normal world we have people who have different colored hair hten in DB it could work.
-simple story. there is NOOOOOOO need for highschool. its obvious the ''spiderman 1 that made 300 milions domestic i will copy to make the same amount of money because i am a cliche producer who is an idiot'' thinking.
-better actors that dont expect a big paycheck. jamie ching is IMO an insult for a guy who likes to watch movies. she doesnt IMO have a big fanbase so it makes no sense to cast her. for that kind of money you get a better actor that was in more then 5 movies.

That producer will be Stephen Chow. Trust me Stephen Chow should also be blamed for the way the movie is turning out to be. But I know since he has a lot of fans everyone will quietly leave him out of this mess. I bet none of the reviews will mention his name.

We haven't even heard anything from him in ages. I mean, what's the deal? It's like he's been quitly removed. The last time I heard something from him, it's when he showed interest in the green hornet.

i think he doesnt care. IMO FOX called him and told him that they would pay him some money so that they can use hes name. its positive promotion for DB if they attach hes name.

I never said it had to be R.

The point is that people act like this is some dark and edgy looking movie and they made it dark and edgier than the manga/animation.

Give me a ****ing break. That's ********.

Yeah, when people are comparing a movie to Power Rangers after seeing its promotional material, then it can't possibly be described as dark and edgy.

The thing is, from jump Fox along with the director of the film decided to take out elements they deemed as not important and decided to expanded upon elements that were not so important in the series. The characters portrayed in the films have seemed to have undergone drastic overhauls to a point where it's questionable if they will be portrayed with the same attitudes they had in the show. If you're going to make an adaptation of a series, it's ok to make changes here and there as long as the changes are legitimate. Prior to the first Spider-man filmed being released, Alex Ross came up with a concept for SM's costume, it contained some elements from SM's original design but overall it wasn't that well recieved, they had multiple designs for the costume and they finally decided to go with the original suit with cosmetic upgrades (raised webbing and silver/black gloss) and people loved it. The same could have been done in this case, dont overly change up the costumes, just update it.

WTF?!

I think the costumes are good in this movie. The only thing I am bummed out about is the pants of goku's gi but other than that they are good. They are million times better than the ****ty gi joe costumes.

All those who have some kind of mission to see Dragonball fail will be crying when the movie makes a billion dollars.

Yes I know it's not a lot but I'm trying to be realistic... This movie won't be perfect afterall.
