I think SP is too "different" for americans...it'll be much more appreciated overseas.
The general overseas audience are just as dumb as the Americans are.
Given the release date, Marvel Banner, hype promotion parade that this movie will have going for it's pretty likely this movie will open up Summer and be the typical 100 + Million opener that comes with the territory.
It's new and different and will attract a dichotomy audience.
Girls who think Hemsworth is dreamy - Check
Fantasy nuts who will see the sets and wonder what this movie is all about
Comic book fan nuts of the Marvel ilk who will see this movie just to set up thier desire to see Captain America 2 months late
General Action movie fans who desire to see the first big movie of the summer.
- Now place on top of that some really fantastic cast member the high proabability that this is going to an epic kind of film and you have the makings of 400 + Million domesitic take. If it lives up to what we all think it's going to be.
Exactly. Not even all superhero fans like the Watchmen comic. I have always had mixed feelings towards it myself. The main superhero movies that have underperformed that has surprised me to a degree are the Hulk movies. I think it was the weirdness of the Ang Lee one coupled with the Hulk as a CGI character which is a hurdle for a lot of people.
I completely agree with this, and especially because the technology as of those movies was just not up to standards of having the main character being CG. I still think they could have pulled it off live action with camera tricks and a body builder. Especially considering the hulk had the tv series with lou ferrigno.
Any spidey film that can stand up against and wipe the floor with a star wars movie can do just fine against star trek and batman 3. This new spidey flick will do surprisingly well, I guarantee you that with unwavering conviction.
But SM3 made alot at the box office. Surely people liked it that made it make that much money? If it was hated by everyone, the movie wouldn't have made that much. I think just the fans were sour towards it. I think the GA for the most part dug it, and they have known Tobey as their Spider-Man for all these years. Most people out there have no idea a reboot is happening or that even a new Spider-Man has been cast. When it's all revealed, I have no idea how they could react. The trailer has got to impress them I guess. Then the quality of the film and Garfield.
Movies making a lot don't necessarily mean the movie was well received. JP2 made more money then JP, but I have yet to meet someone who actually said they liked JP2 more then Jurassic Park. SM3 was riding off SM2, and it had the added benefit of being kid friendly, so the preteen crowd had their parents drag them back to it multiple times.
Also, SM3 really wasn't that bad. Not nearly as bad as the fans made it out to be. But overall, I'd say reception in the teen to mid 30's crowd was lukewarm, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's a drop in attendance. And as you said, unless the trailer really impresses, the reboot, and the fact that new actors are playing the characters, could really turn some people off.
And like I said above, B3 and Star Trek are going to be formidable competition. Anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves. Spider-man is one of my favorite characters, but I'm not going to bet on Spidey out of those three movies.
I believe JP made alot more than the secondf film. JP made around $900 million worldwide and JP2 made around $600 million.
Agreed. And the fact that this reboot is so damn sudden might get people confused and turn people off. I mean this is five years later. People still might have been waiting for a fourth one, then whoah, new cast and reboot? How will they respond to that?
I've always said, and Raimi said this too, that no matter who you put in the suit, Spider-Man is their hero, and people will still see it. But with this reboot happening so soon, that notion will be more questionable.
It's style is definitely different which I like. But people seem to be acting like this is as original as District 9 or Inception. It's still based on a comic. The visuals are just about the only thing original.
Well, yeah. The entire story of D9 itself is original. It didn't exist already from a comic or book. I mean Scott Pilgram as a comic is original, but the film is an adaptation of it. The choosing of the visuals is original, but it's still from a comic.

Sucker Punch will have no competition though.
