That sounds lazy. I haven't seen it yet but you make me want to check it out.
First Class is following X3 and Wolverine - both opened huge but plummeted in the second weekend. People have been burned by this franchise twice now and will be very cautious next summer. I'll be surprised if it doesn't open lower than the original back in July 2000 (which was around $55 million).
Spider-Man 3 was the highest grosser in the series worldwide, but that was built on how much everyone loved the first two and the promise of finally seeing Venom. As we all know it was...truly hated by everyone. I guarantee you we're going to hear a lot of regular people ask, "Why did they replace Tobey?" and not understanding the logic of rebooting so soon. Plus opening the reboot days after Star Trek 2 and two weeks before Batman 3 is beyond foolish. It's going to get eaten alive.
The difference is that Robert Rodriguez makes movies cheaply and quickly as opposed to Universal spending $60 million + $30 million in marketing for Scott Pilgrim; Lions Gate paying $25 million for the domestic rights to Kick-Ass and another $20 million marketing campaign; and the mess of the money Warner Bros. had to dish out for Watchmen.Deep down I know that but I just want to try to shake common sense into some of them atleast.
And Machete is the next fanboy over-hyped movie. It's being directed by a nerd director after all.
It might make back it's budget but I'm not sure yet. I'll wait till it gets closer to predict it. I just hope that my fellow fanboys don't expect 75 to 100mil for this one because it won't be pulling in those kinds of numbers. The difference is that Robert Rodriguez makes movies cheaply and quickly as opposed to Universal spending $60 million + $30 million in marketing for Scott Pilgrim; Lions Gate paying $25 million for the domestic rights to Kick-Ass and another $20 million marketing campaign; and the mess of the money Warner Bros. had to dish out for Watchmen.
So even if Machete doesn't make big bucks, it should at least be able to make backthe $25 million production + marketing budget if they don't go insane.

It couldn't even edge out Inception in it's fifth weekend.
Ofcourse I mean overall. This movie has nothing to do with The Expendables. TE put a bunch of old action stars/tough guys in the movie so they could make a ton of money. Trejo, Lohan and Alba are not going to be bringing the big bucks in. Some in the cast may be talented but they won't put buts in seats and the movie is a sorta spinoff of a failure. It won't be a big hit.You talking about opening weekend or overall?
I also don't think it will make much but a good look into it's possible BO will be what Expendables ends up with...somewhat. I think both movies share the same group of fans/moviegoers, so The Expendables BO could be a decent indicator of what it could make, key word "could" of course.
1. Everyone in this thread is a fanboy.
Never said either would bomb, but they'd under-perform. There's a difference.
