Gandalf would shout to Dumbledore, "Wizard, you shall not pass!" ... and then he wouldn't pass.

Gandalf owns all, hell even gots

Gandalf Totally!

First off.... Dumbledore doesn't use the Torture, Controlling, or Killing Curse. They aren't a factor here. Now, he does have some awsome magic, but what's Gandalf done?

- Called Down Lightening to his sword to help kill the Balrog (which in itself is also an evil fallen angel per the Silmarillion)

- Called Down Light from the sky to ward away the Nazgul (holy light?)

- A tap of his staff destroied a large, solid stone bridge. Imagine that on Dumbledore's noggin cap!

- Created a quick spell that blew up a room and killed many orcs (if memory serves)

- Came Back From The Dead

- He's also a welder of the Flame of Anor. (I think that's how it's spelled). Now I dont' remember what that means, but I think the Silmarillion goes into it but I'm too lazy to go look it up. But we'll just assume it's like, Wizarding Judo or something

Yeah... that's enough for me. An Archangel Vs an old guy with parlor tricks.

Gandalf For The Win!

Dumbledoor on the other hand has:

Blasting charm to blow things (and people) to bits

Invisibility

Transfiguration

Levicorpus to hang an opponent by his ankle

Apparation

Shield charm

Parrying spells with wand

Disarming charm

Word.

The only thing Gandalf would do to Dumbledore is scream at him, then shine a really bright light at him. Lame:down:

Throughout the whole series, from the Hobbit to the Return of the King, Gandalf does very little magic. What magic he does do is very minor or not described. One Avada Kedavra and it's over.
BAM! True that.

I sooo wrote this fight on my site a couple of years ago, if you can read spanish: http://www.resca.com.ar/spot/hist1.htm

And I voted for Dumbledore because I cried a lot when he died and when Gandalf died I knew he'd be back. And yes I know it's not a popularity contest but I just like Albus a bit more :p and he was far cooler on the books than the movies, while Gandalf was far cooler on the movies than on the books

-------------------------

And it's true what someone posted and I hadn't read before, Gandalf does very little magic on the books, almost none whatsoever, while Albus' duel with Voldemort is just too amazing, or when he single-handedly defeated the Death Eaters after Sirius' death and confined them. Dumbledore wins, but I doubt he'd use Avada Kedavra.

I'm happy to hear that you've thought about this match too. You also bring up a good point with the Death Eaters. I too, doubt Dumbledore would use Avada Kedavra. Although I may be wrong, I just can't see Dumbledore resorting to a cheap kill. I really think this would be a great match to watch. I don't see Gandalf losing the match, though.

All hats aside:

Matt: I totally agree with the Tolkein 'difficult' writing style. I REALLY tried to get through LotR books, but I couldn't get past the Shire. I prefer to read stuff that doesn't mindlessly describe needless locales, and I certainly don't need mega gay songs rammed down my throat every spread.

As for the fight:

"Gandalf called down the light from the angels of Kazoroth the Mighty!"
-so because he summons a lightning bolt or a beacon from someone sounding impressive that makes him all mighty! A poor mans Lumos anyway.

"Gandalf is a godammed Archangel! we don't need to see him use his obviously all powerful magic!"
- in the films at least, his magic sucks ass. The most impressive feat of magic is his dragon firework, which the Weasley twins managed at 15. To say he's more powerful just because he's an angel or old is blind faith, we are dealing in 'fictional' facts here people.

"He beat the Balrog!"
- he used all of his magic to bash a thin outcrop of rock, then got caught like a gimp by they ankle. Admittedly, legendary buttwipping ensues, but thats due to his PHYSICAL prowess rather than his magic.

"He came back to life"
- I got the impression he was sent back, re-incarnated and GIVEN more power to do less impressive tricks!

Not to mention he lost in one of the crappest magic bouts of all time in FotR. Compare that fight to OotP. Nuff sed.

Dumbledore has more magical power, more range and more flexibility.

Eliminate a rocky out crop?: Bombarda
Caught by the Balrog?: Relashio
Falling down the pit?: Ascendio
Caught in a room with enemies?: Dumbledore's special "Golden Sparks" charm. Eliminates EVERYONE.

Yeah Dumbledore died, but he asked for death, planned for a year, and trained a 15 year old boy to die, be resurrected, and eliminate a Dark Lord for him. Legend.

Oh, and his weapon of choice was an UNDEFEATABLE wand made by muthaluvin DEATH. Which he earned by defeating its old owner.

Dumbledore FTW.
Damn I wish LotR would get knocked off its podium.

Fair do's. I knew I'd made a mistake somewhere. Too much geekery to keep a handle on.

Flashy magic and raw power makes not a wizard. Wisdom and the sense to use his magic well is the key.

Well this is a magic fight, not a debate, and all the sense in the world ain't gonna do squat when all you can do is turn a proverbial flashlight on an off, crack a thinning outcrop and make your sword glow.

I've heard that argument before, long before I even knew about the Hype. How Gandalf is "only a fourth level mage" and such loads. Here's my primary counter argument, which works especially here on the Hype, what with it being a primarily superhero based site and all.

Among comic book fans, a common debate is the Batman vs. Superman debate. There are many good arguments for both sides, and honestly, there is no real clear cut winner in most cases. But it's hard to find a fan who'll say that Batman has no chance at all against Superman, and those who usually do focus more on the power levels of the two and less on the characters themselves. This is a common mistake, and one that seems be made here.

Gandalf's wisdom, like Batman's intelligence and resourcefulness, is as key to the battle as his skill in magic, which despite common belief is at quite a high level. Sure, I'll be the first to admit that I know next to squat about Dumbledore, though I don't doubt his power. My argument here is that Gandalf is not the push over many may think he is.

With but a simple light spell he disabled the ranks of a ten thousands strong army of orcs, he fought the Balrog to the death, killing the demon before he himself died. As noted above, Gandalf is also a holder of one of the rings of power, a gift bestowed upon a few individuals of great power. Then of course there's the fact that on Middle-Earth, wizards are an entirely different race than humanity, and Gandalf is something of a celestial being, akin to an archangel or the like.

My main point here is this; don't doubt power because it's expressed subtly.
