it's still better than all the candidates in the poll, no matter how you slice it.

I agree, but not everyone agrees with us. And, in fairness to them it should be in the poll.

I've never understood the point of musicals.

I don't know of a single instance in my life where I've bust out into a song and dance number, and complete strangers come out of nowhere and join in and somehow can follow along to the song that I'm making up as I go along.

And, Sylvester Stallone never went to vietnam and fought the war by himself. So, whats your point?

Okay, thanks

Every post I read from you, you're trying to either provoke, start a confrontation or just $#!+ on something that the majority of people here on a comic book forum are going to love. That makes you a troll.

You're the third type of people in this world.

I havent seen Chicago but Million Dollar baby isnt that great of a movie.

Hope that helps you out :yay:

DA, the reason ROTK was omitted is simple:

The film was a technical and historical achievement (representing the trilogy as a whole) and is one of few films to match tremendous critical success with even greater commercial success. And while a few critics may have wanted to see Coppolla's Lost in Translation take the crown, FEW (and I mean FEW) believed Mystic River or Master and Commander deserved Best Picture over King.

That's opinion, not fact, and doesn't excuse the movie from the poll. I would have easily voted ROTK.

Hmm. Interesting.

So, I'll concede that the poll is flawed. I guess I naively believed that no one would find Return of the King to be less deserving of Best Picture than say Crash.

Though, I will say that I don't believe Return of the King's status as a technical and historical achievement in cinema to be an opinion. Nor do I believe it is merely an opinion that few critics saw Mystic River or Master and Commander to be more deserving. But if you comb through the reviews and papers from around that time and prove otherwise, I'll completely rescind that thought.

Well Lost in Translation which was also nominated has a higher rating on RT.

Not really a good judge of worthiness, seeing as how Return of the King had a higher score on Metacritic, another major review aggregate site.

People (myself included) voted against Million Dollar Baby because it was a poorly written, heavy handed and contrived "prestiege piece" that screamed "I want an Oscar" and robbed Scorcese again in one of his best efforts (The Aviator).

And those against Chicago still have not said WHY. Why is it the worst? I'd argue it is more nuanced than Gladiator or Million Dollar Baby or Crash (though of those three I think Gladiator is better than Chicago....only Gladiator) and is very well made near flawless movie.

I want to hear the reasoning. And if you say "it's just tap dancing" than ROTK "is just overly long cartoon battle sequences." You can easily do that to any movie.

DACROWE= DA ****, because that's exactly what I was thinking, and it saves me the trouble of articulating that thought...

Chicago is the "worst".
ROTK is highly overrated and should be on the list.
Gladiator should be the one that is omitted. :o

Gladiator? No way, it is still one of the best epic movies of all times!

A Beautiful Mind? Nah, this movie really deserved it's award.

Chicago? Hell yes, it was the worst nominated movie'00!

Million Dollar Baby? Not bad, but The Aviator deserved it more.

Crash? Well, it was as good worthy film as was Brokeback Mountain.

1) I like ROTK and probably would've voted for it that year.

2) That still does not mean it is immune to criticism and I personally think Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind were better movies.

3) No, I am not a screenwriter. With that said I don't think it is very hard to write better than Paul Haggis, who outside of his action stint pieces (like Casino Royale) is ham-handed, cheesy and ridiculous. I liked Crash in spite of his screenplay but his script was the weakest part of Flags of Our Fathers and Million Dollar Baby was dreadful.

4) I remembered several papers, magazines and the likes stating their favorites. If I remember both Premiere magazine and Time magazine that year said ROTK was going to win, but in a perfect world Master and Commander should win (kind of like how Goodnight and Good Luck was the best movie of '05 but because people are scared of non-sensationalist dialogue and black and white it was too small to win).

5) I still haven't seen why Chicago is the worst for most voters here except "it is a musical." And if you think a musical is a bad form of cinema, you have no justification to be posting in a film forum or claiming to be a film buff of any sort. I'm not saying you have to like Chicago, but insulting an entire genre that has given us films like Caberet, My Fair Lady, Singin' in the Rain, Fred and Ginger, Molun Rouge, etc. is plain ignorant.

P.S.

The argument "I never have known someone to burst out into song with an orchestra behind them and everyone to know the words," etc. etc. is ridiculous, especially on this board.

This is SUPERHERO HYPE! Please tell me, how many people do you know to have been hit by radiation or some such nonsense and have the ability to climb walls, swing from webs, shoot claws out of their hands, shoot lasers out of their eyes, be blind and jump off buildings without injury, fly, turn invisible, grow into a giant monster, have their skull turn on fire or be able to stretch with no end?

All of that is more outlandish than people singing. Even in action movies, how many people have jumped into a falling airplane and steered up from crashing on the rocks below? In comedies, how many people have we met that can do something as insane as attack a town's parade and and cause mayem and riots, only to marry the girl he kidnaps and become senator?

Point is these are all movies where the impossible happens and we accept it if it is told well.

The only "musicals" I like are the ones by the Marx Brothers. Although I always skip the songs, and get to the good stuff- the comedy.

The rest of the musicals aren't enjoyable to me

There sure are some crappy movies that have won best picture this decade.

Oh btw where's Return of the King?

And don't say "It's so good it gets a free pass," because I know a lot of people who think both Mystic River and Master & Commander were better that year. ROTK should not get a free pass because it is a geek movie.
Please! Don't make me laugh Master and Commander was good and it had some of the best acting in it but clearly Return Of The King was best picture of the year. Do also consider if they denied Rings the best picture again after the two prior films who may have deserved it more. I agree that Return OF The King was not the best Rings film. I'm glad it won. Simpley because Fellowship Of The Ring lost to Chicago and it was the best film that year. I picked Chicago rolls eyes to that flick.

Gladiator i definately agree with. By far Crowe's best film to date and my favorite Ridley Scott film. Sorry Alien fans.

Crash was ok but i didn't consider it oscar calabar but then again seldom do i like oscar winning films.

Million Dollar Baby the hight light for me was seeing Morgan get an Oscar one of the best actors going today for his race or any race period.

Memento should have won over Gladiator. The other nominees for 200o were pathetic. Erin Brockovich? Felt like a make for Lifetime original. Chocolat? :whatever:

FOTR lost to A Beautiful Mind (which I agree with), not Chicago.

Chicago beat TTT and Gangs of New York for that matter.

I probably would've voted for ROTK, I was just pointing that out. Though Mystic River was VERY GOOD and I would not have been upset if that had won.

I know I should but I havnt seen Chicago.

Out of those Million Dollar Baby, It was a good film but not deserving the title of "Best Picture". I think The Aviator deserved the award.

Chicago. I found all the others to be at least good, but no way did this one deserve the oscar .
