Film Review: ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’

After going from 8-bit zero to arcade hero during his original outing, Wreck-It Ralph levels up in a big way with “Ralph Breaks The Internet,” an ambitious, all-around satisfying sequel to Walt Disney Animation’s wonderfully outside-the-box smash that ranks among the studio’s very best toons: It’s a poignant buddy movie that’s sincere in all the right places, but knows better than to take itself too seriously. While the 2012 project was an inspired example of easily expandable world-building, this cleverer than expected follow-up skips the obvious next step — simply exploring the other games that share the same power strip — and sets out to conquer the relative vastness of cyberspace instead.

Deftly defying expectation, Ralph Breaks the Internet, absolutely crushes it. A turbo-charged satire that swaps out Gen X video arcade nostalgia for our current, all-consuming social-media-fueled obsession, the endlessly inventive Walt Disney Studios Animation follow-up impressively levels up with laugh-out-loud consistency.

Hmm. Andre seems happy with it, but I lost all interest when he said the cameos are almost nonexistent. The entire concept behind Wreck-It Ralph centered on video games, (Ralph himself IS a video game character) so dropping that aspect for the sequel makes NO sense.

I'm not saying Sonic and Mario and Mega Man and Donkey Kong should be featured throughout the entire film, but most the appeal of the original Wreck-It Ralph was that whole 'world' the characters inhabited based itself on gaming. Game Central Station, Sugar Rush, Hero's Duty, were all original worlds with their own unique looks. Stripping all of that away so Ralph can hangout in YouTube is just stupid.

I liked it. They definetly gave them a realistic conflict that adults and kids can relate to (there really isn’t a true villain in this). The Princess scene sets stage for two funny sequences later in the film. The internet is presented nicely though I could’ve done without some things. There’s quite a few funny references only adults will get. Overall nice follow up, the video game cameos are present at the beginning and end, and there’s a mid and after credits scene (mid was my fave).

Huh... was not expecting this. I'm fine with it, though... I've grown really tired of surprise villains.

Looking forward to watching the movie myself! In January. Because that's when it will be released where I live (same for Aquaman). I love living in a country that refuses to release blockbusters around Christmas because they would compete with our own ****ty comedies that no one wants to watch.

Saw the movie last night. It was alright, but IMO not as good as the first. Overall very well-made and entertaining, but just didn't grab me as much and didn't make me laugh out loud at anything (although I did chuckle at various scenes). Would probably rate it 8/10.

My non-spoiler thoughts:
- As already mentioned in that video review linked earlier, I was a bit disappointed that the video game references weren't really there in this movie. A new Wreck It Ralph movie could have mined so much more from the last few years of gaming.
- Anyone who's been on the Internet since the 90s should get most, if not all, of the references. Although the vast majority of Internet references were to the post-dotcom era (Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest), and a lot of them flew by too fast to catch as well, I definitely caught at least 2 references to the 90s Internet era.
- Gal Gadot's character was a standout and totally badass, and riffed on her character from a previous movie that she did. Would love to see her again if they make a 3rd movie in this franchise.
- Naturally, as one might expect, there were a LOT of references to all of the characters and brands that Disney owns now, from Star Wars to Marvel and Disney princesses (btw, whoever voiced Ariel totally needs to sing her part in a live-action movie). That's all I'll say about that to not spoil anything!
- There are 2 credits scenes—1 mid-credits, and another at the very end, Marvel-style. The 2nd one wasn't really worth staying for IMO.
- It was actually worth seeing in 3D too, for those who like seeing movies in 3D.

Well , they DO have the right to tell a different story in the sequel. And this IS called "Ralph Breaks the Internet" for a reason.

It was pretty good. Not as good as the first but still good. The lack of Felix and Calhoun on the adventure kinda bugged me even though they had their own little offscreen adventures.

The entire thing was one big critique of the internet, most of which was spot on albeit some of it was kind of too preachy. It was still funny as hell.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a Felix and Calhoun short film that’ll be attached to the blu Ray/digital release similar to “Auntie Edna”.

There were some good sequences but it sidelined some characters and relied too much on other things.
