The farmhouse sequence really grows on you to be honest. I know a lot people are quite critical of it for various reasons (they find it a detour, tone shifts, X-24, finding the Munsons are just fodder, downright mean spirited etc.), but reflecting upon it, it's such a great sequence of character beats. It reminded me of certain scenes from No Country for Old Men in terms of how chaotic and horrifying it was.
I can see why Mangold would be incredulous that Fox allowed him to keep a sequence of such brutality and bleakness. Imagine if Bruce lost Rachel and Alfred on the same night in addition to Harvey getting scarred, or if Steve had to choose between a bleeding out Tony and saving Bucky or Sharon who are getting dragged out of a house. I might be concerned about the film going a bit overboard at that point too. Mangold truly went for it in that scene. The farm is a kick in the balls. I can understand it would put people off, but that is a credit to the scene if anything. I love it. An issue I feel the film has is that it drops off a bit after. Nothing hits as hard as that scene.
I loved that X24 was withheld from all trailers and TV spots (at least as far as I know). It was a nice surprise during the film itself.
I actually tweeted James Mangold and asked if he ever considered Victor Creed as an alternative to X24; this was his response:
