World X-Men and Homosexuality: The Connection

Yeah, I wouldn't go as far as say it's a straight connection (no pun intended). I think he said that the X-Men can relate to just about anybody of who feels different from everyone else, and are persecuted for it. That goes for the GLBT community, to blacks, whites, hispanics, heck, even nerds.

no one's claimed it to be the ONLY connection. but, yes, there's a connection to any/all oppressed minorities.

Sorry buddy. Most articles that compare X-Men to an oppressed minority, compare it to homosexuals. It's the most parallel. It's about a minority that come about during puberty, we are able to hide it if we want. People ask ridiculous requests of us ("Have you tried not being gay?"). People have opened recruitment centers to "cure" us of our "disease". Does any of this ring a bell?

I don't remember the last time black people hid their ethnicity. Or Hispanic's tried to cure themselves of being Latino.

Is it the only connection? No. Is it the most easily accessible? Yes.

One of the main reasons Bryan Singer agreed to do X1 & 2 was because of the similarities he saw.

True. I think the actual Civil Rights Movement of the 60s has the biggest parallel in that Xavier and Magneto are representatives of the two biggest leaders of that time, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, respectively.

Homosexual situations? When was the last time we saw Cable dancing around in a pink tubetop, sprinkling glitter and destroying families in the south?

The last time I did notice that a writer put them in a homosexual situation is in the movies, where Bryan Singer used the terms of comming out etc. Well that and Magnetos perfectly shaped buns.

Rupert Everett is gay? Well, I never much cared for him to know about his personal life, anyway.

Oh yes, Rupert is gay. I've seen him in London bars flashing his 'muscle mary' torso!

And he has a fantastic autobiography that's very well written and a great read. A very intelligent and witty person.

I know this thread has been dead for nearly a year, but it's a wonderful one and I thought that I'd share this video, for those people who enjoyed this thread as much as myself.

The video was created as a metaphor, comparing of the lives of the X-Men and the lives of gay people, specifically pertaining to the negative aspects of living in a society where negative feelings exist in the majority.

I know its an old post but I just need to disagree with this post (as someone has resurrected the thread anyway). X-Men is a paralel with anyone who feels different and who has been persecuted because of it. This is key to its success. Sure a strong paralel with homosexuality is often made but there is often a strong paralel with other minotiries too.

As MaskedManJRK said, the link between the Civil Rights Movement of the 60s are very evident, as are the recurring stories set with mutant death camps and mutant hate groups and people hunting and killing mutants. These are all relevant for a lot of minorities. Its mentioned that other minorities can't hide their ethnicity as an example to dismiss other metaphors but this is ignoring a large number of mutants who have physically manifested mutations that they can't hide either.

The minority/minorites being parallelled changes writer to writer and I think claiming that any one paralel is the best one is or is the "most easily accessible" is being very dismissive (and frankly quite arrogant).

(...though IMO I think the paralels have been added by later writers. I think from the outset Stan the Man created mutants, more as means to be able to create superheroes without having to bother thinking of origin stories each time)
