Yates to direct bigscreen 'Doctor Who'

based on what lol

he can do the stand but doctor who is untouchable lol

Yates did such a good job with bringing Potter to the screen, that it's kind of laughable to suggest he might not be able to handle Dr. Who.

Lynch can make a great film and call it Dune but that don't mean it was a good Dune film. It was just a good Lynch film.

The metaphor is lost on me as I don't like Dune. Not the movie, not the TV movie, not the book. None of it.

This summer...

Robert Downey Jr. is The Doctor

Come on we all know that Johnny Depp will be the Doctor.

The only thing I fear is the Americanization/Hollywood Studio executive way of thinkingcation of it.

This summer...

Robert Downey Jr. is The Doctor

Robert Downey Jr. is The Doctor (cut to him kung-fu-ing his opponents in slow motion while cracking wise with Jude Law) and Kristen Stewart is his Companion (cut to her in Twlight angst before leading an army of Time Lords into a medieval battle with the Daleks).....

Cue people who liked the trailer saying, "Well it's actually an accurate take on the material and also really cool. Who wants to see the same thing again? I think turning the Doctor into a smart-ass action hero, a real stretch for RDJ as he's doing a different English accent, and adding big meieval battle sequences is really original and fresh and different and unlike anything else in Hollywood...."

Just saying.

doubt the director of harry potter is gonna Americanize anything lol

since yates is british himself

Gary Oldman for the Doctor. End debate, close thread.

But no...
I'm not sure how I feel about this. As much as I am excited, I'm also scared. Starting from scratch could be a good thing, but I don't really want to see the old stuff just thrown out. They should do what Star Trek 2009 did. It's Doctor Who, alternate universes and parallel timelines exist. Why not honor the old and the present, but still do their own thing?

If it isn't Matt Smith, there is no point. He is "THE" Doctor and it significantly increases the chances of seeing the best legs in the world on the big screen.

Would also love to see Eccleston and Tennant play supporting roles of some significances. A truly good multi-Doctor story.

*Cue Hurricane 2000*

"You thought you knew WHO he was" -

*Shot of the Tardis exploding*

"You Thought Wrong!"

*Exciting Zack Synder-esque shots of revamped Dialects, sex in the Tardis, The Doctor regenerating, etc...*

"This Summer...

Robert Downey Jr
Mila Kunis
and Nicolas Cage as The Master in

Doctor Who: Regenaration!
"

In a world gone timey wimey!

Michael J. Fox IS...

Tardis zooming through the sky with AC/DC playing in the background

Doctor Regenerates

The Doctor- Let's face it. This is not the worst thing you've caught me doing

You're over estimating Dr. Who's popularity.

----

For the record, I'm already sick of the word "Americanized."

TRAILER VOICE: You thought you knew his name...

Robert Downey Jr. steps out of the Tardis in slow-motion....

TRAILER VOICE: You thought you knew WHO his friends were....

Cut to Kristen Stewart/Amanda Seyfried/Blake Lively/New Transformers girl/Emma Stone moaning in ecstasy from PG-13 Time Lord sex.

TRAILER VOICE: You thought you knew his story....

Cut to giant explosions in a galactic space battle...

TRAILER VOICE: It turns out...

RDJ slowly takes off his sunglasses...

TRAILER VOICE; You. Don't. Know. WHO.

RDJ: Did somebody call...the Doctor?"

AC/DC Song: AND I'M T-N-T. I'M DNYN-O-MITE!

Cut to a quick barrage of explosions, kung-fu fight scenes, space battles with giant "Daleks," the Companion swinging a sword and/or battle axe into someone while heavily armored, a different shot of PG-13 sex, and end with RDJ saying something witty to a flabberghasted Jude Law.

TITLE.

TRAILER VOICE: This summer the Doctor is in.

Wait for it.

Sometimes I feel it was a mistake for Downey to take the Sherlock role. Now if he isn't doing a Marvel movie, he's doing Sherlock Holmes instead of 'Gravity' or a smaller film like that.

Throw Karen Gillan in this movie, and I'm there. :hrt:

I feel for all you Dr. Who fans, as a fan of Harry Potter I had to deal with Yates butchering of fantastic source material and I feel you will have to as well. My condolences.

Yeah, he seems to be having a good time but Sherlock Holmes was such fluff. He conquered the world as Tony Stark. I hope he'll take all that good will and throw it at something that really challenges him in the future. I would have loved to have seen him in Gravity.

Alan Rickman for the Master

Yeah, I'm also mixed on this. Part of me doesn't see the need to start a new continuity. Just tell a good story that stands on it's own and is accessible to new viewers, but also make it fit in continuity. Hint at a preexisting history, and if the new fans are interested, they'll look it up.

At the same time, from a production standpoint, I understand. Assuming the tv show is still ongoing while the film(s) are being made, I can see it becoming a pain to keep continuity straight between them. So keeping them seperate also makes sense.
