I love that "It doesn't even apply to you mentality". It's as if just because something doesn't name YOU, it doesn't matter. What a lazy attitude. If it affects one American, or it takes MORE money away from you, THEN IT DOES AFFECT YOU!
it's more or less public higher education through service that is looking like it will keep kids off of the streets, out of gangs ,help level the playing field for job opportunities plus make our workforce more attractive to investors again. it's basically the non-military service.

So because there's a chance of 18-22 year olds being "forced to volunteer", that affects me, a 31 year old?
I call bull****.
This is why I think "mandatory volunteerism" is a good idea. Young people can help pay for college and learn something--whether it's a trade or just working with others.

stop using slavery as a comparison...its insulting and offensive

What I would object to is mandatory military service. I have to give the republican party credit here, they havent' really supported a draft since Lincoln's time. The second draft occurred under Johnson (I think?) I could be wrong about that.
And isn't it still law that a young man sign up for selective service or he or he won't be qualified for college loans?
That's the problem BL.
Volunteer is practically a dirty word around these parts
Most of those programs have been around for a long time. Now that most people have access to the interNet, it seems natural that websites would be made available for those interested in the programs. If you think that a handful of internet links devoted to stuff like the Peace Corps and Americorps is pressuring people to volunteer, then I really don't know what to say. Maybe try to relax, or something.
