You need to Volunteer.....NOW!

I love that "It doesn't even apply to you mentality". It's as if just because something doesn't name YOU, it doesn't matter. What a lazy attitude. If it affects one American, or it takes MORE money away from you, THEN IT DOES AFFECT YOU!

I feel the same way when I look at the healthcare in the U.S.
We pay the insurance companies twice what other countries pay for less coverage.
why?
It affects us all. It affects businesses and the economy. People lose homes over medical bankruptcies. why? because the corporations control the message and most of the legislators.
the American people are not being served by the media or the govt. they are only helping themselves.

it's more or less public higher education through service that is looking like it will keep kids off of the streets, out of gangs ,help level the playing field for job opportunities plus make our workforce more attractive to investors again. it's basically the non-military service.

This is why I think "mandatory volunteerism" is a good idea. Young people can help pay for college and learn something--whether it's a trade or just working with others.

What I would object to is mandatory military service. I have to give the republican party credit here, they havent' really supported a draft since Lincoln's time. The second draft occurred under Johnson (I think?) I could be wrong about that.

And isn't it still law that a young man sign up for selective service or he or he won't be qualified for college loans?

So because there's a chance of 18-22 year olds being "forced to volunteer", that affects me, a 31 year old?

I call bull****.

It's no different than when I was a senior in high school, and someone wanted me to sign a petition against a stricter dress code at the school. I laughed and told them that I'm graduating that June and once that happens I won't give a **** what goes on in the school I used to go to.

"Mandatory volunteerism" is an oxymoron.

What they should call it is "mandatory servitude."

Or slavery . . . either one works.

I wonder . . . if the government repealed any amendments and laws and reinstituted slavery among blacks, would any of the whites complain? Should I?

After all, I wouldn't be affected by it . . . it just affects black folks, you know. :whatever:

stop using slavery as a comparison...its insulting and offensive

I'm sorry, but no.

Slavery and its use in discussion is not the sole domain of the blacks in this country. It went on for thousands of years before America was founded, it continues today all over the world in different forms, and it will continue for a long time after we're long gone.

To force a free man to do work against his will--to take away his liberty--is to make him a slave. Period. There are no ways around it. Not liking it doesn't make it less than what it is.

I know that and I wasn't insinuating that it was the sole domain of the "blacks"

And what about us that worked hard in high school to not have to pay for college?

There are a few reasons why you're seeing a big push for people to volunteer. Some of these organizations have few people volunteering right now... and that makes sense since the economy is forcing people to find paying jobs instead of donating time to these groups. Another reason is, there haven't been too many "big events" to whip people into action (like a hurricane or other disaster). When Katrina hit, there was a big surge in membership to Americorps and other orgs. Four years later, the volunteer efforts are kind of unnecessary, and ppl aren't faced with the same challenges that brought them in to these groups in the first place.

IDK what the government is planning to do with forced service. I think it would be better for them to offer service in exchange for student loan forgiveness than it would be for them to force it upon us.

Most of those programs have been around for a long time. Now that most people have access to the interNet, it seems natural that websites would be made available for those interested in the programs. If you think that a handful of internet links devoted to stuff like the Peace Corps and Americorps is pressuring people to volunteer, then I really don't know what to say. Maybe try to relax, or something.

I don't need to read the whole thread. I'm addressing the opening post, which I think is misleading.

So volunteering or doing anything the gov mandates makes you a nazi? My good our schools! The children are being made into hitler youths! Quick take your kid out of school and teach them the good old fashioned way! Way to get hysterical over a study and jump to random funny conclusions.

Considering how much people would apparently pull out their fingernails than actually do something that might make the world, the country or just the neighborhood a better place maybe they should make it part of being a citizen. Maybe we could do with a little bit of thinking of other people.

Volunteering isn't so horrible. I've been a big brother for several years now and I'd absolutely recommend it to anyone. And I'm a evil bastard saying this.

apparently you're not so bad, because you volunteer....you're just a big softie and you're not fooling anyone

wow another mod and he's bringing worldnutdaily links.
are all the mods here "conservative"? any liberal moderators here?
