My top 41 movies with reasons why:
1. Superman The Movie: Simply and still is the king of comic book movies in my humble opinion, it started it all. Been a childhood fave of mine and is an inspiration to me as it made me love comics especially Superman comics.
2. Sin City: A modern work of art! Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller simply just brought to life the cult comics and graphic novels to the big screen in a grand way thanks to very talented actors, three visionary filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino, Rodriguez and Frank Miller in his directoral debut.
3. 300: Saw this baby three times in a theater and loved every minute of it, Frank Miller's extraordinary graphic novel is wonderfully shown on film for the first time and is true to it's original source if not actual history. It's grand slamming entertainment.
4. Batman Begins: The greatest Batman movie around! after the previous franchise which was promising thanks to the very good Tim Burton flicks then went downhill with the not-so bad "Batman Forever" and the unbelivable crappy "Batman and Robin", WB decided to reboot the franchise and so did Christopher Nolan. Paying tribute to both Tim Burton movies and the original comics especially the Frank Miller and Bob Kane stuff, Batman has been done right on the big screen in a incredible way and the sequel might be even better since Joker is in it, it's just the greatest DC comics movie since "Superman".
5. Akira: Made me love anime since i was 14 back in early 1996 when i read an article on anime in Time Magazine, then i rented it at one of the local video stores and after i watched it i just loved it. Just an amazing story with spectacular animation, action and a sense of being majestic, it became one of my all time favorites and i even started reading some back issues of the classic Japanese comic.
6. The Crow: A masterpiece of the 90's from director Alex Proyas who brought the cult adult comic book to life on the big screen with satisfying results, too bad this was Brandon Lee's last role since he died on set before it could end but this movie was a special gift for fans of horror, fantasy and comic books alike.
7. V For Vendetta: Brilliant adaptation of the quirky and dark Vertigo graphic novel, The Wachowski brothers wrote the screenplay and produced this intelligent and fascinating Sci-fi thriller to the silver screen and Hugo Weaving was perfect for the title hero, it's one hell of an allegoricial and political thriller in the tradition of Orwell and "Blade Runner".
8. Hellboy: Ingenius, fun and action packed adaptation of Mike Mignola's popular cult Dark Horse Comic has been done well thanks to the talented and brilliant filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro who would later give us his masterpiece "Pan's Labyrinth", Perlman was born for the hero role and i loved this since i saw in theaters in 2004, the sequel will rule.
9. Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky: Mind-blowing, gory as hell and ultraviolent Hong Kong Sci-fi action martial arts fantasy comedy is pure genius from finish to start. Based on a Japanese manga called "Riki Oh", this is a graphic yet often hilarious movie that has to be seen to believed. Adored since i rented the tape at one of the local video stores when i was 18 back in 2000.
10. Spider-Man 2: A rare sequel that actually surpasses the original, how about that? Sam Raimi really delivered all the goods that made the original movie enjoyable but even better thanks to more action, a better villain, intriguing story
11. Ghost in The Shell: Another amazing anime that captivated me in 1996 along with "Akira" being first, truly captures the greatness of Masamune Shiro's manga is a complex but stunning movie with ideas, great animation with high technology, and has also became another all time favorite of mine since i rented it.
12. Cemetery Man (a.k.a. Dellamorte Dellamore): Macabre and funny Italian horror comedy based on an Italian comic book for mature readers called "Dylan Dog", back in 1996 when i was 14 i read nothing but praise for this movie thanks to film critics and i rented the movie, instantly thought it was well made. This movie along with "Scream" and "Psycho (1960)" made me a horror fan instantly.
13. Heavy Metal: Just plain fun, sexy and gory Sci-fi fantasy anthology influenced by the popular adult comic magazine of the same name. John Candy with Roger "Squidward" Bumpass and Eugene Levy including Harold Ramis provide voices, been a fave of mine since i taped it off TBS when i was 11 in 1993 and later rebought it in it's uncut uncensored version when i was 14, oh man! almost every young boy who watched this back in the 80's and early 90's on cable staying up fell in love with Taarna, geez she was so smokin' for a platinum blonde toon. Highly influenced "The Fifth Element" which is another all time favorite movie of mine.
14. X-Men: Radicial adaptation of the beloved Marvel comics, after years of rumors of a movie in the 90's especially Carolco, Fox finally got the rights and hired Bryan Singer to put the characters to life on the screen yet he succeeds.
15. Blade 2: more action, more suspense, more dark humor and more gore! Guillermo Del Toro who is now one of the best directors in recent memory does a fantastic sequel that is probably bigger then it's precessor.
16. Superman 2: The greatest Superman sequel yet! adored it as a kid just like the first one, but now i think the Richard Donner version is even better, Ursa is just plain sexy as in hubba hubba.
17. American Splendor: Brilliant independent production from an independent comic book has earned tons of praise by critics, i could see why.
18. X2: A worthy successor to the instant 2000 classic, Bryan Singer and company does it again but with more mutants, more action and a grand story.
19. Ichi The Killer: Violent and cruel yet funny Japanese horror action comedy based on an extremely violent and very adult Manga delievers all the sickly goods that even horror filmmakers like Lloyd Kaufman (Troma), Eli Roth, Rob Zombie, Clive Barker, Alexandre Aja and other modern horror filmmakers especially the so-called "Torture Porn" genre owe to. Takashi Miike has delivered another masterpiece of his just like "Audition" and isn't for the weak of heart.
20. Dick Tracy: Entertaining and rousing adaptation of the classic 30's comic strip character thanks to the all-star cast and grand production values has always been a personal fave of mine since i watched this in theaters at the age of 8.
21. Batman Mask of the Phantasm: The best Batman movie before "Begins", really captures the spirit of Bob Kane's character in every way but in animated form and Mark Hamil was amazing as always as Joker's voice.
22. Iron Man: A recent pleasant suprise! caught it yesterday and i thought it was mind-blowling damned good and is worthy of the recent Marvel film cannons. Can't wait to see it again tommorow.
23. Oldboy: Brilliant and hard boiled Korean/Japanese action thriller based on a Japanese Manga is one of the best movies in recent memory, i saw it in it's initial U.S. theatrical release and was blown away.
24. Batman (1989): Loved this since i first saw in theaters back in the wonderful summer of 1989, i remembered all the hype that was going on and i even collected some of the merchandise especially a magazine on the movie, ate the cereral, and watched the campy TV show on the Family Channel. I became a Batman fan instantly afterwards, but now "Batman Begins" blew this one away but it's still a great movie that helped brought the comic book genre back on the screen after the Superman franchise crashed and burned with "Superman 4".
25. The Mask: Jim Carrey was a big star back in 1994 and this is one of those movies that made him big. While not quite faithful to the original Dark Horse Comic source, this is still a well made and funny movie with mindblowing effects for it's time.
26. Flash Gordon: Sure it's silly but it's a fun Sci-fi epic based on the classic comic book character, loved this since i was a kid and that theme song by Queen was memorable as hell.
27. Blade: Started the major Marvel movie renissance in 1998, when people thought Comic Book movies were dead no thanks to Joel Schumacher's disaster "Batman and Robin" there was hope and this movie was it.
28. Superman Returns: Often underrated but superbly done installment of the franchise, it was 10 times better then the silly "Superman III" and the unspeakably god-awful "Superman 4: The Quest For Peace". Bryan Singer wanted to continue off the first 2 classic Superman movies and ignore the events of "Superman 3", "Supergirl" and "Superman 4" as he wanted to honor the spirit of the classic comic character with respect including Richard Donner's films.
29. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The Movie (1990): I've always had a soft spot for this movie since i first saw it in theaters 3 times as a 8 year old boy in the spring of 1990 and captures the spirit of the graphic novel that started it all before the cartoons.
30. Spider-Man: From 1985 to 1997, Cannon Pictures to James Cameron and every other director wanted to get their hands on bringing the beloved web-slinger to the big screen. It wasn't until 1999 when Sam Raimi with Columbia finally bought the rights and was originally going to be released in december of 2001 but was pushed to May 2 2002 to avoid competeting with "Lord of the Rings", it became a pop culture pheneomenon and delivered all the goods but the sequel was even better.
31. Road To Perdition: Saw this in theaters and thought it was a wonderful movie, didn't knew it was a comic until i found out then i read the graphic novel and it was damned good like the movie itself.
32. A History of Violence: Superb psychological thriller and another winner from one of my favorite directors David Cronenberg, he brings to life the Vertigo graphic novel to the big screen in a violent way as the way he intends for his movies.
33. From Hell: Brutally violent and sleazy slasher flick based on a graphic novel by Allan Moore and influenced by the cases of Jack The Ripper, Johnny Depp and the gorgeous Heather Graham really shine in this movie together and it's one hell of a gory trip.
34. TMNT (2007): Much better then the previous TMNT sequels, i thought it captured the spirit of the graphic novels just like the first one did. The CGI is quite good and the storyline isn't half bad, this was a worthy installment of the franchise.
35. The Punisher (2004): A slight improvement on the Dolph Lundgren 1989 dud which felt like an "In-name" only movie. It really brings the true nature of the character on the screen like never before, Thomas Jane wasn't too bad as Frank Castle but i'm sure the sequel will blow this one away.
36. Nausicca: Valley of the Winds: Hayao Miyazaki is nothing more then a genius! he did started making this originally as a manga in 1980 then brought it to the screen in 1984. Loved it for many years thanks to a taped fandub video.
37. Batman Returns: Inferior to the original 1989 masterpiece, Tim Burton still does deliver some good if eerie entertainment here. Even though they changed Penguin's origin, this was the last good live-action Batman movie before "Begins".
38. Ghost in The Shell 2 Innocence: Although not as good as the modern animated classic, this was a very good follow-up and i saw it when it came out in U.S. theaters here in Albuquerque. Great graphics and animation plus a good storyline just like the original.
39. Fist of the North Star (1986 anime): Brutally violent and gory anime Sci-fi martial arts feast with plenty of exploding heads, bodies ripped apart and dark humor in the dub. I loved it when i was 15 in 1997, it has to be seen to believed.
40. Batman The Movie (1966): Total complete fun from beginning to end! sure it's not like the character Bob Kane intended but just suspend your disbelief for 2 hours and have some goofy fun even with the family. Succeeded in making a Batman comedy where Joel Schumacher failed.
41. Men in Black: One of the 1997's coolest movies, this Sci-fi comedy is based on a Malibu graphic novel and is quite a charming movie for everyone.
