Well, well, well... It looks pretty, pretty, pretty good!
The tone and setting are perfect. The
noir vibe is definitely there, but we can also guess how some supernatural elements will appear, which is a perfect mix. I love it!
The character designs are great
(but that's hardly a surprise!), and so is the look of Gotham.
Although I grew up with the original series, as a foreigner, I don't have the same attachment as others to Conroy's work on Batman. But I really like what I'm hearing here from Linklater and I believe he's a promising heir.
My biggest takeaway thought is the richness this new world already seems to demonstrate. That's the premise for a lot of new intrigue, and that's as exciting as it gets!
------
Now, that being said... And I know I'll be alone on this but I can't help but be
slightly disappointed by the technique
(don't hit me!).
I'm mainly targeting the work on shadows and lighting, which often seem to feature simple edgings
(which work) where they could flesh out the modelling a little more.
The color palette is very nice and suited to the
noir setting, but I also think some shots could gain in atmosphere by adding a little contrast and/or saturation here and there...
Mind you, I'm not saying it's not good! Far from it!
But, for now, I don't think the technical quality is really that much better than what we usually get from DC Animation.
I'm tempted to say that it's, perhaps, a little less sophisticated than the original series in some area
(but again, it's fine, it looks good anyway).
I feel super uncomfortable sharing these little tests...
I'm not posting them to say it's better, but just to show what I'm talking about (top the original photos, bottom my retouching)...
------
Anyway, those little nitpcks aside, I'm pumped! This is the Batman project I'm most looking forward to since its annoucement.
It was through the original series that my love for the character began, as did my interest in drawing, illustration and staging in general, playing a big part in the professional career I choose.
So bring it on!
