1, 2, Freddy's coming for you....

They could have made him innocent, but I didn't want to feel sympathy for Freddy in the last act. I really enjoyed most of the remake. What didn't work for me was the memory loss rationale and when they borrowed specific things from the original, but didn't use them effectively. I wish we had gotten a sequel that went it's own way. Haley was a decent Freddy.

I agree with most of this. I absolutely HATE the whole "maybe he was innocent" angle. Freddy is NOT supposed to be seen a a sympathetic character. Jason maybe, but not Freddy.

I don't mind the whole memory loss thing as much. It does make a certain amount of sense, as children who are that young do sometimes repress the memory of very traumatic experiences.

The classic scenes borrowed from the original movies didn't really bother me that much. The movie didn't really need them, but I don't feel they really hurt it either.

The movie actually made me jump at certain parts. That in and of itself was impressive, as I tend to find most of todays horror films too predictable to be scary. It had good atmosphere and built suspense nicely. And Jacky Earl Haley did an admirable job as Freddy. He actually made Freddy scary again.

Unfortunately style cannot make up for a lack of substance, which is what the remake had. Lots of style but no substance.

As for a sequel? Meh! It would likely include another "Maybe Freddy wasn't guilty" story, which sucked in the remake so it would suck in the sequel too. Why make a sequel to a movie that was as badly flawed as the remake.

I can't believe I haven't posted in here yet. (Points to screen name.)

1. Anightmare on Elm Street
2. Dream Warriors
3. The Dream Master
4. Freddy's Revenge
5. Freddy vs Jason
6. Freddy's Dead
7. The Dream Child

1000. ANOES remake.

I don't list New Nightmare because I've never completely thought of it as a Freddy film. It is, most certainly, but it wasn't actually Freddy, but a demon taking his form. That said, I'd rank it about number 5 on my list and move everything else down. Its a good film, but surprisingly doesn't keep me all that interested on rewatch.

I wanted to like the remake. I really tried. But it just didn't click. I honestly think the worst offense to me was turning Freddy into a child molester. Not that I don't think he did in the originals, but I literally cannot make sense of why he would come back to life as a child/teen murderer, especially sinc ehe was clearly guilty of doing it, and not wrongfully accused like the film tried to make us believe for half the film. I will admit, Haley makes an ok replacement for Englund though, but he could have been a lot better.

IMO, You don't always have to be innocent to become a vengeful spirit. At least they didn't try to go with the Freddy's Dead explanation that it was dream demons that actually came to him & wanted him to kill for them.

If I were remaking A Nightmare On Elm Street, I would just make Freddy a sick & twisted bastard from the beginning, like he was into the occult always trying to go beyond the limits of reality but that which he sought the most forsakes him until he actually dies.

This. I love this. I'm sure there will be another Nightmare in a few years (too big name not to capitalize on it), I'd love to see this element incorporated.

So in other words, you want to see a remake of Wes Craven's Shocker, lol. Just kidding, actually that's a pretty good idea (Freddy being into the occult that is, maybe the children murdered were some sort of Satanic ritual human sacrifice).

And you're right about not having to be innocent to become a vengeful spirit. In fact, those who are evil and guilty in life are more probable to become vengeful spirits than those who are innocent and wrongfully accused. If you use the cannon from Dream Warriors, the real problem (aside from Freddy being evil and into the occult when he was alive) was he wasn't properly buried in hallowed ground.
