They could have made him innocent, but I didn't want to feel sympathy for Freddy in the last act. I really enjoyed most of the remake. What didn't work for me was the memory loss rationale and when they borrowed specific things from the original, but didn't use them effectively. I wish we had gotten a sequel that went it's own way. Haley was a decent Freddy.
I agree with most of this. I absolutely HATE the whole "maybe he was innocent" angle. Freddy is NOT supposed to be seen a a sympathetic character. Jason maybe, but not Freddy.
I don't mind the whole memory loss thing as much. It does make a certain amount of sense, as children who are that young do sometimes repress the memory of very traumatic experiences.
The classic scenes borrowed from the original movies didn't really bother me that much. The movie didn't really need them, but I don't feel they really hurt it either.
The movie actually made me jump at certain parts. That in and of itself was impressive, as I tend to find most of todays horror films too predictable to be scary. It had good atmosphere and built suspense nicely. And Jacky Earl Haley did an admirable job as Freddy. He actually made Freddy scary again.
Unfortunately style cannot make up for a lack of substance, which is what the remake had. Lots of style but no substance.
As for a sequel? Meh! It would likely include another "Maybe Freddy wasn't guilty" story, which sucked in the remake so it would suck in the sequel too. Why make a sequel to a movie that was as badly flawed as the remake.
