"1" Change You'd Make For Spidey 3!

A lot of things annoyed me about this film.

If I had to chose JUST ONE thing though, it would be:

Venom's "baby raptor" screech/sound effect.

Apart from so ridiculously inappropriate for the character, the timings of the screeches were so wrong, rasping away when trying to be stealthy.

That, and the fact that the symbiote is supposed to be weakened by the same sort of squeals it was making the entire time through. But then again, they were so deft in their adaption of the symbiote that they not once noticed the train that didn't affect it or the pipe vibrations that did nothing in the Sandman fight...

The one change I'd make? I'd have hired some actual writers.
Sam, stick with directing. Ivan stick with......doctoring....

1. Focus on one story line either have Peter dealing with the New Goblin or the Sandman.

2. If they're going to have Venom, I rather they introduce him to set up the battle for Spider-Man 4 then having die in a lame matter like ten mintues later.

3. If the black suit had to be apart of the movie show it having real effect on him other than knocking down Mary Jane then realizing what the suit is doing to him.

4. Personally I would end the movie with that scene of Venom grabing Spider-Man.

Simply, more Venom/Eddie Brock since there was only like 15 seconds of Venom.

Take Venom out. This increases Sandman's credibility. Having two ppl take down a sand monster is tough enough.

Keep Venom for 4, give him a decent screech, and when i say screech i mean growl like 90s cartoon. Dont have him team up with ppl! Say we instead of I.

DO-NOT-HAVE-TOPHER-GRACE-PLAY-HIM! I felt like i was watching a re run of that 70's show. I am sorry Topher is a bad actor, he didnt try to create and personify the character of eddie. He played Eric Forman, the reporter who gets a symbiot. It was aggravating, Just go back to his scenes, watch them, then watch that 70s show. Same Acting...

Easy change: Get rid of the reporter at the final battle. Entirely. (or) Get rid of Bernard's dialog with Harry near the end of the film (or) Get rid of hokey and inappropriate cheering kids when Sandman is getting blown up.

Harder: Rearrange Symbiote-Parker's evil moments so that there is a build up in the bad things he's doing, instead of a mishmash of shocking/more lighthearted scenes in seemingly no apparent order.

I guess that's more than one thing unfortunately. But even though I think the "harder" change I mentioned would help sell the dancing down the street scene (it would be easier to digest as funny before Parker goes on to do more morally objectionable things), keeping the seriousness of the final battle could greatly improve without that unneccessary reporter. (I couldn't feel comfortable watching that scene with my friends or family who didn't see Spider-man 3 if it was on a DVD) Spider-man 3 had a lot of really great moments I loved, but I can't quite justify buying it on DVD even though I have 1 and 2 (not to mention 2.1).

Hmmm one thing to change...How about the entire script? Does that count as one thing?

I absolutely loved the first 2 Spider-Man movies, but 3 was a total let down. I felt like I was watching As the World Turns: Manhattan instead of a superhero movie about one of my favorite characters. Sandman's "creation" was lazy, Harry's character seemed to be used only to tie up loose ends rather than flesh him out more, and Venom was terrible. My absolute most hyped thing about the movie was finally seeing my favorite villain on the big screen and he looks like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle with teeth and a screechy dinosaur-like voice? God awful.

I think Sony should take the Jurassic Park theory here...pretend the 3rd movie never existed, and make 4 a continuation of 2. that's just my $.02.

How about SOME kind of origin or reason for the symbiote coming to earth and finding Peter.

How about SOME kind of origin or reason for the symbiote coming to earth and finding Peter.
The film should have opened up with John Jameson's shuttle crashing back to Earth in the East River. Spidey goes swinging over the open water (he'll swing from a bouy or something) and his spider-sense goes off. He dives in the river and swims down to rip the hatch off the shuttle door and pull John to safety. When he pulls the door off, the symbiote flows out and makes contact with Spidey but just floats to the surface. We abandon the symboite for now but periodically cut to it traveling around, presumably in search of Peter since he was the first being the symbiote made contact with on his arrival on Earth.
Bada-bing, bada-boom!

Only one thing I'd change? I'd go with better writing, that way the entire film improves.

Funny you should mention this. When this scene came on, a patron in the theater actually yelled out, with panic in her voice,"Quick, put your mask on"! The rest of the movie audience laughed. I kid you not.:wow:

heh, was this last part a hidden joke at the whole i kid you not thing from the first movie?

Dropping the entire Symbiote/Venom plot.

=Much better film.

This film was as good as the first and the second up until Venom's appearance and his teaming-up with Sandman. That scene is a shame of cinematography. I can't find any logic how a director, who was responsible seven years for the Spider-Man franchise, could have come up with a scene like that one. I have watched the film many times and with each time that scene seems more and more horrible than before and totally not belonging there. Before that moment the film is perfect. Maybe it is naive, like the falling of the meteor or the birth of Sandman, but such was Spidey 1 and 2. That's Sam Raimi's vision of the story.
If I had the power to change something in this film it would be that scene and with it the whole continuity until the end :) I would have finished Sandman's story somewhere in the middle of the film and have Venom completely dominate the last part of the film. The only villain who can stand by Venom's side in an alliance is Carnage. And there is another thing that started to irritate me. Harry showing at MJ's house and threatening her, that was a lame way to spark a hatred against Harry. That scene was meant to be Venom's when he kidnaps her.
I know that they can't make such radical changes, but I still have faith in that extended cut to fill some holes in the story. I hope to see more scenes with Norman and Harry, like in the book. I really hope they cut the team-up scene and put that one in the park, or maybe put both of them. Eddie shows at the park as himself and maybe Sandman refuses his proposal there and then later that night they meet in the alley, where Sandman accepts his offer (or I would have been most happy if here Venom would bite a piece of Sandman, that way he would have no choice but to fight for him and would also explain his ridiculous and grotesque form, not mentioning that it would make Venom more powerful and showing his complete dominance at the final battle). Also, one more thing, a scene with Venom, standing still (not jumping and wall-crawling) at the top of the church on a rain right after his transformation, not with Eddie's face, but Venom's.
There are more things that could be changed for this film to become a masterpiece, but it is not in our power. Though I believe that the extended cut will make a far better film. They cut this one purposely for later on to release another edition of the film, and they have cut some significant scenes, not like the scenes from Spider-Man 2.
I know that I needed to mention one thing that had to be changed, but one follows another :)

Snootch hit it right on the head. Now how come some well paid Hollywood writer didn't think of that?

Well said. That scene was a throw in though. We definitely know that the Sandcastles scene was shot. Which is good news because that scene is both a.) more believable and b.) adds to the depth and development of each villian.

Like alot of people are saying, I would save Venom for Spiderman 4 and focus on Sandman more. The scene were the symbiote drips onto Eddie Brocks hand and eventually takes over his body should have been the last scene, saving Venom for an entire movie instead of 20 minutes.

get rid of the god damn dancing scene/peter playing the damn piano

Yes, this really bothered me as well. With all the vocal effects at their disposal, Venom could have sounded much more creepy and unearthly in speech patern. If one just watches the animated series from the 90s, Venom sounded "perfect". It makes the villian all the more frightening. It appears that Raimi doesn't really grasp that fact that the alien symbiote is a thinking/ feeling lifeform with it's own thoughts and emotions. That should only be added to Brock's perona in every aspect, including vocal patern. Oh, and Venom should not say something like "I am Venom", but rather, "WE" are Venom"!!

Oddly enough, I don't think the name "Venom" was ever mentioned out loud during the film. That says the "writers" assumed people would know enough about the character to not have him introduced properly. Which also says, they should've known better than to make such odd changes in his character without people noticing; a screech of a roar, everything GG2 did should've/could've been done by Venom to "humiliate" Parker, and the duality of the character.

With that last part in mind, can we really say Rami didn't understand what it would be like for a Symbiote to be "a thinking/feeling lifeform with its own thoughts and emotions" when HE DID THE EXACT SAME THING WITH DOC OCK'S ARMS IN THE PREVIOUS MOVIE!!! (save them talking through their host)

All this said? If there were one thing I'd change about Spider-Man 3, it'd be to hire actual writers. Just like so many others have said on this thread. The story that was written made very little sense considering all the money put into filming it. I really don't want to be one to put the people invovled in this film down, but I'd be willing to bet if you gave a kid a Spider-Man, Venom, Green Goblin, and Sandman action figure, s/he'd come up with a fairly entertaining story. (...maybe that's an exaggeration.)

What still gets me is Sandman turning away from a god-awful, demon looking thing that speaks. Who DOES that?!

One more thing. Peter Parker grew some testicular fortitude between High School and even this point in college. Just like any body else would, ESPECIALLY one who suffered so many life-altering experiences. I mean, I've raised money to pay most of my college tuition all by myself! My swagger was at an all-time high after that. Peter Parker defeated a wrestler, two supervillains (though in the comics he'd done much more), and proved his a** of a boss that he can hang with the pros. But he still acts and cries like a twelve year old?!

I was still getting over "Punch me, I bleed" from Spidey2. When he started sobbing in the park in 3, the entire theater laughed and I wanted to cry myself (not with him, though).

If the writers of the story were changed, the entire film would've been better.
