2008 Academy Awards

have we even gotten reviews for Sweeny Todd yet?

I remember before the Golden Age everyone was saying that was sure fire oscar too

There are like, 8 or so out. They are all positive, however, the critics seem to be very Burton-friendly (which makes sense as a studio wouldn't show a bunch of Burton's detractors the movie first). Its hard to get a feel so far.

Yup.

In some ways, the 2008 Oscars strikes me as the "violent" Oscars with THERE WILL BE BLOOD, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, and SWEENEY TODD being among the top contenders.

lol. Yea, it does seem that way. But you still have movies like Juno, Atonement, Into the Wild, and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. So it may not be a violent year after all.

I have a bunch of films I need to see this year still... All I know is that if the Lookout doesn't get some kind of nomination, screenplay hopefully, then I'll be furious. It should get a best film nomination, but that will never happen...

Not really, but Tim Burton already won best director at the National Board of Review. And the film was named one of the top ten best. The New York Film Critics and LA Film Critics also named it one of the best. And the film got 5 Critic Choice Award nominations the other day. The nominations include best picture and director.

If Todd is excellent, I'd love to see it sweep the Oscars!

I don't agree with this at all, I think there always is a "best" (Granted its easier in sports than movies) but even if it is a weak crop (which if selected right it won't be) there still is a "best" movie of the year

....I just rarely think the movie they choose is such
I think we're in agreement. My point was, if all the movies suck, there's still one that's better than all the rest, even if it's not that good when compared to movies that have come before it.

I think Daniel Day Lewis is a shoe-in for Best Actor, but I think Depp can give him a run depending on how Sweeney Todd is critically and how well he sings, since he's never done it before.

BINGO!

daniel day lewis i feel will steal the award from depp or dep wins it.

or!!!!!!!

TOMMY LEE JONES wins it for In the valley of Elah or No country. It really is his year

My nominations for best picture

No Country for old Men
Sweeny Todd
In the Valley of Elah
Assisnation of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
There Will be Blood

Best Actor

Emile Hirsch - Into the Wild
Daniel Day Lewis- There will be Blood
Brad Pitt- AOJJBCRF
Tommy Lee Jones - In the Valley of Elah
Johnny Depp- Sweeny Todd

It'll be a grudge match between There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men. Between the two of them, the oscars will be cleared out. I'm going to say that Javier Bardem has best supporting actor pretty much locked down, and Day Lewis will more than likely get best actor.

Transformers has the visual effects category easily though, and Sweeney Todd could get some stuff for art direction and such.

I'm hoping No Country For Old Men will win best picture, director, and adapted screenplay. I think Hot Fuzz should get the best original screenplay. I'm not sure about the acting categories, other than I'd like to see Javier Bardem, Christian Bale, and Ryan Gosling to get nominated. I could see Ethan Hawke or Philip Seymour Hoffman getting nominated, but other than acting, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead wasn't that good a movie.

I haven't seen Zodiac, There Will Be Blood, Lions For Lambs, Juno, Into the Wild, or Gone Baby Gone, though, and those seem to be getting some buzz.

Yea, that makes sense. No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood will share the "important awards" while Sweeney Todd gets the art department awards, Transformers the technical awards, and Enchanted the musical awards.

I am also just about as anti Burton as it gets (however Big Fish is fantastic), and Sweeny Todd does nothing for me outside of the fact its an excellent musical, but the Burtonization imo leaves much for me to desire, but I also think its a bit much to say this flick is gunna sweep the oscars when there have been 8 reviews for it, when like the Golden Age was an early oscar favorite before that thing had a whopping what 20 percent on RT.

No one has said that. Obviously this movie WON'T sweep the Oscars but expect it to get many nominations.

american gangsta

Denzel might win Best Actor cause there isn't a mega stand out here, and he has given bar non the most iconic performance of the year, bar none, iconic doesn't always mean best, but when there isn't a better job that stands out more (for instance I think Casey Affleck in GBG was better, but he doesn't stand out nearly as much).

Also I do think Ridley Scott did an excellent job capturing the 70's, on top of bringing a great movie together, and maybe a nod, but no win

Wait till There Will Be Blood is released.

I'd say it's a long shot considering Transformers, Pirates, Spider-man, Potter, and Die Hard have destroyed 300 in visual effects, and I'd assume Beowulf will get in before 300 does
How come Die Hard? I don't remember anything else than the F-35/Bridge-going-into-bricks -scene and that was very crap.

Does anyone else think this will win the Oscar for Best Song?

I thought the freeway scene was top notch, just my opinion I guess.

am i the only one here who thinks that Brad Pitt really deserve the award of best actor of Jesse James ?
