You know what its like? You find yourself so spoiled after a while that if you go through one small drought, you feel you have suffered more than Cub fans and you become so inured to the idea of losing that it feels better than winning. And when they finally do win again, it's like "Eh whatever. They are supposed to win... I'd have been better if they had lost a couple more decades longer to make the win even more meaningful."
That's how a felt like for the U.S Men's basketball team a while back. It's like you become so used to the Jordans, the Malones, the Robinsons, the Stocktons, the Ewings... then when they started bringing in all these thugs like Iverson, Marbury, Anthony's, and Odom's, I started rooting against them more than I was rooting for them. And even when they cleaned house and brought in more classier players in Beijing I still rooted against them because I wanted it to be a continual learning/growing lesson for team USA. Not that I was ever passionate about international basketball, but then again, I don't think these so called Yankees fans were THAT MUCH into the team even in the late 90's.
