2012: A Monster Year? (box office predictions) - Part 2

Given if the movie is indeed hilarious and an improvement from MIB2 (adding Big Willy's star power), then I see The Avengers finally falling to second place in Week Three.
That would be week four. The last movie to stay at #1 for even 3 weeks in May was in the 80s. Avengers would have fallen to second place by then regardless

Yeah, my bad. I meant Week Four.

Is not a fair comparison at all, Nolan made the film he really wanted to make. If Sony had respected Raimi's vision, the movie would've been better.

Back on topic, I won't be surprised if Avengers reaches $600 in the US.

Whoa, let's not jump the shark here. 500 million is an undertaking as it is in the biz.

If Battleship was say Transformers 4, that would be interesting. But it's not only got no brand or stars, it's got some nasty wom.

No, Raimi could've made it better than it was.

Even with the studio's wishes.

The studio didn't force omelettes or butlers or dancing down Raimi's throat

Just the Venom character

It will put a dent in it of course. But cut it's legs out from under it? No chance.

Teenagers and men and kids will choose Avengers every time over Dark Shadows. And honestly, Dark Shadows doesn't even seem to have that Burton/Depp charm. Alice in Wonderland was bizarre and surreal, not to mention it's an iconic story anyway.

Dark Shadows? Not so much. It looks like watered down Burton to me.

Men and kids? Sure.

Except the gender you're forgetting was enough to propel a little vampire movie called Twilight to box office records without those other two. But I doubt Avengers would be breaking records without them.

So yeah, Shadows could still put a serious dent into Avengers.

The same kind of dent any big film gets in its 2nd week from the best of the new films that comes out. What did we expect in the 2nd week of May? Dark Shadows is a normal level non-juggernaut summer film.

I had a hunch about this months ago but I think is is finally materializing in reality. In Box Office terms, Avengers is this years TDK, Rises is probably this years Indy 4. Everyone predicted good but not spectacular numbers for Avengers; much like the TDK. Everyone thought Rises would dominate the year by far. Well, the situation has been turned on its head. The reactions to the footage (ancedotal) has been lukewarm at best.

I liked the TDKR trailer. Bane and Catwoman look awesome. I really loved how the score kept building and building and building, eventually getting all triumphant at the end. The dialogue was great too. I loved the line "You've given them everything" "Not yet" or whatever it was.

But... it just didn't have that wow factor. Who was saying there was a spectacular shot of a bridge collapsing? Because that wasn't in the trailer. I've seen mishaps in a supermarket more spectacular than that. And i fear the fight choreography will be a let down again. WTF was that spinning punch thing Bane did? I mean seriously, WTF was that?

TDKR is much darker than your typical summer movie and I didnt think that would matter but the audience when I went to see Avengers didnt really react to the trailer but then agian one audience reaction dont mean anything.

TDKR has too much goodwill to be anything other than a success.

It's could a 'modified' limb destruction maneuver from Kali/Silat or a 'flashy' Superman Punch from MMA. It's unknown at this point.

I didn't find it silly. Alot of people liked it.

Dude, you have not seen more spectacular disasters at your local supermarket. The bridge shot was a bridge shot.

Ehhh I just don't see why Bane, of all people, would be doing stuff like that. If anything, Batman should be doing the more flashy attacks. Bane should be like a machine. Straight forward, efficient, tearing into his enemies. Not doing spinning punches.

He is, but he's also athletic and explosive. Why can't he be both? Bane has been seen doing front flips in comic books.

That's cause you're comparing a the reaction to a trailer to the reaction of a newly released hit film. Imagine for one second that it was TDKR that was released this weekend whist it was that third trailer that now just being released for Avengers.

All this really shows is how buzzy a trailer can be. However overstated.

I think the reaction to the Superman trailer is going to be interesting. There are entire groups of people that have no idea what superman can really do(physically) or how powerful he can look in motion etc. I trust Snyder to demonstrate this in a few months. The reaction to this trailer(which will be seen by many considering it's placement) will be very telling and I think genuine. Though many will have a knee jerk reaction given how **** the previous film was.

The dancing is a direct result of the symbiote, so that wouldn't have been there without studio interference. As for the rest of it, we don't know. Vulture didn't require as much time to set up as Venom, so there could have been more time to reconcile Harry & Peter without him. Also it is possible that Raimi just half-assed the whole thing because he was pissed off about the studio interference.

We will never know what things would have been like had the studio not forced Venom down his throat. Maybe it still would have been a mess, maybe not.

The response to the new TDKR trailer was lukewarm ?

Everyone thought Indy 4 would dominate, if it was good. And why wouldn't you expect that with the people involved.

Not in my theatre. Loudest applause i've ever heard for a trailer. Then again, those same people went(almost) equally as ape***** for the amazing spider-man trailer and that doesn't have nearly the same buzz.
