That's why I use a 10 scale. A 4 star Meyer isn't as good to me.
10's too many. It confuses me.

I like the old 5 star scale.

5 = Great
4 = Good
3 = Average
2 = Bad
1 = Does anyone even use 1s anymore?

Cruise and Brand will be fine. Brand even has his own late night show debuting in two weeks. I don't even know who that Hough chick is and I don't expect to see her in many more movies. I wonder if Rock Of Ages will put an end to the small musical fad thats been going on over the past couple years?

I actually checked out That's My Boy, best Sandler flick since The Longest Yard IMO, not as bad as people say.
it wont put a end to the musical fad.mama mia and hairspray were good rock of ages was not.cruise just didnt fit as a rocker to me i just think this was badly miscast.

Personally, I don't believe in films being able to be ruined by miscasting of good actors. It ultimately comes down to the direction and script.

I guarantee you, if you gave me Quentin Tarantino and a good script, you could cast Dakota Fanning as one of the Vega Brothers and it would still be awesome. :o

Dark Shadows has grossed nearly $75 million so far. And that movie was dead on arrival. So, it could be possible for Abe Lincoln to reach $75 million domestic. Especially since Abe Lincoln doesn't have to deal with a giant success like The Avengers. Right now, it's the calm before "the storm." Many films can quietly gross a decent amount.

Dark Shadows has one thing Abe Lincoln doesn't...Johnny Depp. Can you imagine Dark Shadows without Depp's name? Let me introduce you to Abe Lincoln.

Don't you mean without Depp's name? :o

I doubt it. There have been flops before (the 2005 The Producers, Nine and Phantom of the Opera underperformed), but there have been plenty of hits for 12 years now--Moulin Rouge!, Chicago, Dreamgirls, Hairspray, Sweeney Todd and Mamma Mia!. We also have Les Miserables coming in December and it looks fantastic. I hope it keeps going, I'm happy to see the genre and art form has returned in the last decade.

Hopefully Les Miserables is good because I want a musical other than Sweeney Todd to enjoy.

Singing in the Rain, Top Hat, My Fair Lady, Cabaret, Moulin Rouge! and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers say hi. :oldrazz:

Seriously, if you want something darker and more challenging Cabaret may appeal to you, but Singing in the Rain, MR and Seven Brides are all so entertaining I can't help but recommend them as well.

You forgot the Sound of Music. :o

some actors dont fit certain roles no matter how good a script and director you have.i didnt think rock of ages had a bad script or director.

Do you really think that Tom Cruise was it's only problem? I haven't seen it, but even people who hate it seem to at least faintly praise Cruise. What I hear is the story is very light and the singing has little edge. I'll know in a few days.

im just giving my thoughts on what i didnt like about the film.i dont hate cruise i loved ghost protocol.i just think it could have been better with another actor as jaxx.

Abe Lincoln has one thing Dark Shadows didn't have... a clear marketing campaign. Everyone knows exactly what they're getting with Abe Lincoln. Unlike Dark Shadows which confused everyone with its inconsistant ads.

It is opening the same weekend as Pixar. :dry:

Let's not forget that Wanted, made by the same director, opened with $50 million on the same exact weekend as Pixar's Wall-E. Granted, Wanted had Angelina Jolie and a less laughable concept but it shows that other movies can compete with Pixar.

I thought Tom Cruise was fantastic, not only did he steal the show but he's a phenomenal singer which really surprised me.

I'm open to anything if it's good and enjoyable. I just get annoyed by those musicals where they just arbitrarily get up and start singing with everyone in the background doing the same.

They're not on film, but check out Book of Mormon and Avenue Q. They're both hilarious.

You repeating your original statement a second time still leaves me unconvinced. :o

Does - That thing you do (1996) with Tom Hanks, qualifies as a musical ?

'Madagascar 3' Grabs Top International Spot

on June 17, 2012

Paramount reports that Madagascar 3 is #1 globally for the second weekend in a row. The animated flick tallied $53 million abroad from 10,957 locations in 43 territories.
Location highlights from official Paramount statement:
• Russia grossed an outstanding $9.2M, dropping only 41% from last weekend's take and continuing the film's reign as the box office leader. The Russian territorial cume now stands at a staggering $35M.
• In France, Madagascar 3 held on to the top spot, grossing a rock-solid $6.2M, a drop of only 27%, bringing its overall haul to an excellent $15.9M.
• Madagascar 3 also held off all comers in Brazil to continue its run atop the local box office, grossing $3.9 M, only down 48% from last weekend's record-breaking opening and lifting its territorial take to a spectacular $17.5M.
• Mexico grossed a robust $5.2M, down only 25% off its opening, also good for the #1 spot at the box office, bringing the growing territorial total to $15M.
• Argentina posted another #1 weekend, only dropping 34% off of its all-time best opening (all films, all genres), adding another $2.6M to the pot. The cume in Argentina is astounding $7.5M.
• Korea added $2.2M, a fantastic drop of an anemic 10%, bringing the Korean cume to $6.7M.
• In the UAE Madagascar 3 opened to $1.4M from 55 cinemas, now the biggest animation movie in the UAE, Egypt as well as the Middle East combined.

Those are awesome. I laughed so much at Book of Mormon that it actually just hurt to laugh by the end.

I haven't seen the movie Rock of Ages yet, but from what I've seen/heard so far, it sounds like they really screwed up all of the things that made the stage version so much fun.

And keep in mind...I didn't even want to see Rock of Ages on Broadway. I saw a matinee in the cheap seats with a friend, and we wound up loving it so much that we're nearly went back for the evening show to see it again.

What made the stage version of Rock of Ages work was that the music was the star. I grew up in the 80s, so that was my music. If it was sung badly, I wouldn't have enjoyed it. But the cast was so incredibly talented, and they just rocked the hell out of those songs. I can listen to the cast recording and enjoy it almost as much as the originals.

Just going by the movie soundtrack, half the cast sounds like they're going for a Glee audition.

And the story is paper-thin. But again, what made the stage version work is that the show knew how stupid it was, and the narration (which I hear is gone in the movie) kept pointing that out to the audience. At point one character tries to cheer up the other by pointing out how he wanted to be a serious actor "and now I'm stuck in a show with boob jokes and Whitesnake songs!"

Also, the ending (from what I've read about the movie) in the show was much funnier. It's completely different in the movie.

I wasn't sure how it would translate to a film, since the success of the show hinges on hearing that music live and the way they play with the audience, but it sounds like it should have been much, much better.

I'm open to anything if it's good and enjoyable. I just get annoyed by those musicals where they just arbitrarily get up and start singing with everyone in the background doing the same.

Which ones are those?

Cabaret can interest you in how challenging it is. The music serves the story and characters implicitly in My Fair Lady, but there is no denying people burst into song. And movies like Singing in the Rain and Moulin Rouge! are just pure fun. I admit if a musical film has to walk a fine line and can become too cutesy and campy for me. For example, I know people loved Hairspray but I always thought that was a gagger. But there are plenty of great musical films and even more stage shows, though Sweeney is great in both mediums, as well.
