2012: A Monster Year? (box office predictions) - Part 5

Harry Potter 7 had a 72% 2nd weekend drop. I predict BD pt. 2 will have an 80% drop. The movie was horrid, I was forced to watch as my daughter wanted to see it. Easily one of the 5 worst films of 2012. It's a shame that this movie is so successful, but a movie that at least had some ambition like John Carter is a flop.

I hope that the Hobbit will be right up there with Avengers for opening weekend.

TDKR will still remain no 2 for 2012, because the Hobbit will have earned a great portion of it's gross in 2013, but I think it will be 2nd on the list for biggest opening weekend for 2012.

There's no Orlando Bloom or Viggo Mortensen to help it's crossover appeal like they did for LOTR. It'll do really good, I just don't see it matching LOTR.

Breaking Dawn: Part 2 > John Carter imo. Which says more about how bad Carter is.

Skyfall Becomes the Biggest UK Release of All Time

Skyfall, the 23rd James Bond adventure, has become the biggest UK release of all time, earning �94,277,612 in just 40 days. Here's the full announcement:

SKYFALL has smashed the UK Box Office Record to become the biggest film of all time!

EON Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment are delighted to announce that SKYFALL has made history in the UK and become the highest grossing film of all time.

SKYFALL has now taken a staggering �94,277,612 at the UK box office in just 40 days on release, making box office history and overtaking the record previously held by Avatar which had a lifetime gross of �94,025, 632 million during 11 months on release in UK cinemas.

SKYFALL, the 23rd James Bond adventure, continuing the longest running and most successful franchise in film history, opened in 587 cinemas across the UK and Ireland on Friday 26th October, and is still on general release.

In response to this fantastic news, producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said �We�re overwhelmed with gratitude to the cinema-going audiences in the UK who have made SKYFALL the highest grossing film of all time. There has been a big ass lull between Twilight and The Hobbit. The box office has just been quiet these past few weeks because nothing big has been happening. I actually hit Breaking Dawn over the weekend because it was the only thing I hadn't seen.

Wednesday (12/12) Update: Warner Bros. reports that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opened to $643,000 in New Zealand on Wednesday, making it the best non-holiday Wednesday opening in the country's history.
The film will open in 55 territories this weekend on approximately 17,000 screens. Major markets such as Australia, China and Russia among others are not opening this weekend.

Thursday (12/13) Update: Warner Bros. is reporting an $11.2 million Wednesday for The Hobbit. The gross only includes 16 markets.
Scandinavia grossed $4.3 million ($1.6m from Sweden, $1.2m Norway, $1.1m Denmark, $412k from Finland).
Other notables:
France: $2.4 million from 958 screens
Germany: $2 million

Friday (12/14/12) Update #1: Warner Bros. is reporting this morning that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey took in $13 million from midnight screenings in North America overnight. The film debuted at 3,100 locations for a $4,193 per screen average. $1.6 million of the total came from IMAX at 326 locations.
The figure represents the best midnight gross ever in December.

Friday (12/14) Update: WB reports a $16 million overseas Thursday take for The Hobbit in 42 countries. The international tally stands at $27.3 million after two days with a number of markets yet to open.

Since most characters are small, you really can't notice that. As a bi guy, I can definitely say it has the "hot guy appeal" with Fili and especially Kili.

The Hobbit is seriously under-performing. As in not only is $100M 3-day not happening, $80M is in serious question.

My showing wasn't even half-full and I've heard similar reports from friends.

Um, how do you reckon? We only have the numbers for Thursday at midnight and the numbers were HIGHER than Return of the King (the highest grossing LOTR film). Basically is there anything to back up your claims because so far the numbers ARE pointing to it being the highest grossing LOTR weekend following predictions. Here the 7 and 10 IMAX showings and 7 and 9 REGULAR showings completely sold out, it's rare that a movie sells out here. I went mid-day and it was 3/5 full - at 3 - when most people are still at work.

What Return of the King did back in 03 was quite impressive considering The Hobbit which has 3D/IMAX, 10 years of inflation, midnight showings being more popular. But the latest Friday estimate is looking surprisingly low.
