2012: A Monster Year? (box office predictions) - Part 5

I don't know who those some you are talking about the Hunger Games made under 700mil worldwide and everyone is calling it a raving sucess.

If Star Trek makes over 600mil it's going to be seen as a big success. A movie doesn't have to make a billion to be seen as a hit.

Maybe you're right.
I do think THG's successful mind frame comes partially from it's budget(pretty much half the norm). And it's resounding domestic haul(impressive to say the least).

Like I said, Trek is one of the most antip for next year's biggest, yet here we are talking about it probably getting 600mill. I wonder if MOS will beat that. IM3 should.
Thor..no.

Yeah I seriously doubt Star Trek will approach a billion but it doesn't need to to be considered a success.

Star Trek in general doesn't do nearly as well as other properties overseas.

Sunday (12/16) Update: Warner Bros. reports that The Hobbit has grossed $138.2 million overseas during its first weekend of release. The worldwide total is a healthy $223 million.
Key int'l stats from WB:
3D screens represented an estimated 60% of the total box office.

IMAX generated approximately $5m internationally, making it the highest December opening ever, and bringing in a spectacular $40k per screen average.

Top International Markets:

The UK opened to an incredible £11.4m (US$18.3m) from 601 situations, taking 62% of the market share. 3D projection is 60%.

Germany generated an outstanding €12.6m (US$16.3m), including previews, from 1,332 screens, representing a 60% share of the total box office. 3D projection is 80%.

France pulled in a great €9.8m (US$12.7m) with 1.3m admissions from 958 screens, taking 63% of the top 5 films. 3D projection is 60%.

Korea debuted to an outstanding KRW 9.2b (US$8.5m) nationwide from 1,200 screens, taking 53% of the top 5.

Spain opened to a great €6.5m (US$8.4m) from 1,052 screens, controlling 60% of the market. 3D projection is 40%.

Sweden produced an outstanding SEK 39.6m (US$6.0m) from 272 screens, making this the 2nd biggest weekend of ALL TIME (behind HP 7B). 3D projection is 80%.

Italy took in €4.2m (US$5.4m) from 734 screens with 50% share of the top 5 box office. 3D projection is 71%.

Mexico dominated the market with Ps 66m (US$5.2m) from 2,414 screens, garnering nearly 70% of the top 5 films and making this the BIGGEST December opening ever.

Strong numbers in Brazil with R$10.1m (US$4.9m) from 969 screens, taking 53% of the top 5 films in the market. 3D projection is 64%.

Man I knew trek struggles outside the US but I didn't realize it pulled less that 200mil in the other markets.

I thought it made over $500 mil WW. I was under the impression with all the hype and positive WOM it was a smash hit but those numbers tell me it simply doubled it budget. Im sure its made more as well on bluray and dvd since.

Star Trek have never been big outside America. There was a time that here in Sweden at least those movies weren't even getting a theatrical release, they went straight to video

I don't know if I was more shocked by Star Trek's numbers or Inceptions.

All things being equal, out side of the budget, Trek did more or less Returns numbers, though making more domestically.

However we are treating it more like a Begins than the former.

No doubt it will make more, but is anyone expecting TDK type numbers(not even top ten all time btw). I would be surprised if it did Inception numbers...especially with the competition that year(month).

350 domestic does sound good though.

into the darkness could be big, it'll be 4 years when ITTD is released and its had time to grow a bigger fanbase through tv re runs and bluray purchases.

What kind of world do we live in? :csad:

Yeap, it has a decent shot at it. If it can break out in China that is.

All the well if it does. It's only appropriate that the best two popcorn films of the year occupy the top two spots.

Les Misérables grossed an estimated $18.2 million yesterday, making it the 2nd highest Christmas Day opening in history behind Sherlock Holmes which opened on a Friday in 2009 to $24.6 million. Les Mis now holds the record for the biggest non-weekend Christmas Day opening in history, besting Marley & Me, which opened on a Thursday in 2008 to $14.4 million. It is also the highest ever opening day for a musical.
Les Misérables received an A CinemaScore overall, with females (56% of the audience tracked) rating our film A+, and not one other category broken down by age gave it less than an A.

Hell yeah! :awesome:

Seeing it today. I keep hearing that all the shows have been selling out.

If word-of-mouth persists on Les Miz like it did for Sherlock Holmes and Mission Impossible 4, it could get to $200M domestic. That said, even a $150M domestic gross is a huge win for the musical.

I'm really happy to see Jack Reacher making more over Christmas than it did its first weekend. I want a sequel

Just got back from seeing it. Our show was sold out, as was the show before ours. Even with a rather ugly snow/ice storm that started up during our show, there was still a long line to get into the show after ours.

There was so much audible sobbing in the final scenes that the theater sounded like a group therapy session...
