Despicable Me 2 is outpacing Monsters University by 15 percent at the same point in the sales cycle on Fandango. That's big news for Universal's animated sequel considering that Monsters University rallied enough fans to post $82.4 million during its debut frame in North America.

Top 15 worldwide

1. Iron Man 3 $1210,2 million
2. Fast & Furious 6 $682,4 million
3. The Croods $577,9 million
4. Man of Steel $523,3 million
5. Oz The Great and Powerful $491,8 million
6. Star Trek Into Darkness $438,5 million
7. G.I. Joe: Retaliation $371,8 million
8. The Hangover Part III $338,3 million
9. The Great Gatsby $321,4 million
10. Monsters University $307,6 million
11. A Good Day to Die Hard $304,7 million
12. Oblivion $285,6 million
13. World War Z $263,4 million
14. Epic $231,8 million
15. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters $225,7 million

In an early sign of what's to come over the holiday frame, Despicable Me 2 is already way ahead of The Lone Ranger. Universal reports that the animated sequel took in $4.7 million from Tuesday evening shows compared to just $2 million for The Lone Ranger.
Despicable Me 2 easily trumped the $2.6 million haul that Monsters University raked in from Thursday previews. That bodes well for DM2 considering that Monsters University tallied a healthy $82.4 million during its debut frame. BoxOffice forecasts that DM2 could hit $130 million during its first five days in theaters, a sum that would help July start off on a very strong note. The animated flick already has at least $50 million in the bank overseas thanks to strong showing in the U.K. and Australia, among others. There's little doubt that DM2 will easily exceed the $543 million global haul of its predecessor.
The Lone Ranger failed to match the $3.6 million Thursday evening haul of World War Z, another star-driven film plagued by poor early buzz. Critics have not only maligned The Lone Ranger for being tone-deaf and too long, but many are also quick to point out how violent it is. That's not a good sign for family-friendly Disney. TLR had enough to worry about with Despicable Me 2 stealing away the attention of families with young children, but warnings from critics could keep even more families away now. BoxOffice forecasts that TLR will take in $47 million over its first five days.

Thursday Update #2: Despicable Me 2 grabbed an impressive $34.3 million on Wednesday. BoxOffice projects that the animated flick could end up anywhere between $150 million-$155 million during its first five days of release. Universal touts that DM2 is the 8th highest Wednesday opening ever, 3rd highest opening day for an animated feature including Friday debuts, and the biggest Wednesday opening for Universal.
Overseas, Despicable Me 2 has grossed $65.9 million as of July 3. DM2 opens in 38 new territories this weekend. The film opens today in Argentina, Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Israel, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Portugal, Singapore, Slovakia, Trinidad, Thailand and Venezuela.
On Friday, DM2 hits Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Columbia, Cyprus, Finland, India, Mexico, Norway, Panama, Romania, South Africa, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay and Spain.
Disney reports that Lone Ranger grossed only $9.7 million on Wednesday. BoxOffice projects that the action flick is now on pace for an underwhelming $48 million-$50 million over five days. Projections have dropped steadily since Wednesday, so it's clear that negative word of mouth is in fact taking hold. Star Johnny Depp is officially on a cold streak. He also failed miserably with last summer's Dark Shadows. Lone Ranger is a huge disappointment for Disney, but the success of Iron Man 3 and Monsters University this summer definitely softens the blow.

Those ****ing Minions are everywhere. You were never going to escape that kind of marketing.

I took my nephew to see Despicable Me 2 this morning, and about half the kids there were all doing that "BE-DO! BE-DO!" siren noise that the minions do in the trailer (and in the movie as well). Minions are definitely still a big hit. The movie was really good.

But our theater was mobbed with families, so I'm not surprised at all at the numbers it's pulling in.

Any movie geared to kids automatically has like two or three extra tickets tacked on for their parental guardian that's taking them.

Weekend Estimates (July 5-7)

Damn, Lone Ranger will only make around $48 Million in one weekend. We have a second huge bomb of this summer.

I think I speak for everyone when I say I'm not surprised.

I thought After Earth and White House Down also flopped. Wouldn't Lone Ranger be the third?

I liked White House Down but I'm not sad it flopped. The marketing was lackluster and it wasn't the type of film that needed some ridiculous sequel anyhow. Sony and Tatum are sad I'm sure.

The early overseas run of Lone Ranger does not look good enough to make up for the dismal domestic opening week. It's still early though but Western's are a super hard freakin sale overseas. I think that Depp deserved his little vanity project after making Disney billions but enough is enough. His wacky character thing is a drag now.

Despicable Me 2 is just a monster, I wouldn't be surprised if it outgrossed Iron Man 3 domestically.

The Heat continues to do good and will easily outgross Hangover 3 domestically. Over course it probably won't do that great overseas so Hangover winning worldwide is pretty much assured.

Next week brings Pacific Rim which is tracking poorly. Will it be another WWZ and beat tracking or will it be another After Earth, White House Down or The Lone Ranger? Only Friday numbers will tell. I'm hoping for the best but expecting the worse.

My Early Predictions:

Despicable Me 2--47mil-43%

Grown Ups 2--45mil (this awful trailer always gets a great reaction)

Pacific Rim--38mil (I'm hoping it can overcome the bad marketing but I'm not feeling a hit right now).

Wow really surprised by how well The Heat and World War Z are holding. They barely dropped in attendance.

Is it? That is after all a five day total.

I don't expect DM2 to pass IM3 but $350M+ seems for damn sure to me. TS3 had a 5 day total of $141M. Obviously different release patterns means TS3 was more impressive.

I thought we talked about this before opening under Avengers does not mean that a movie didn't post great numbers.

If 140mil in five days was nothing special, why doesn't every movie post those kinds of numbers?

EDIT: I do take back the it might beat Iron Man 3 commentt after inspecting the numbers more closely. You are right Liam H, it seems like 350mil is a better bet..

It is alright SPIDEY. We all get a tad overexcited every once in a while. :cwink:

DM2 probably needs around $410M to beat IM3 for the summer. That's not easy but its not impossible either. If the movie is that crowd pleasing it could hold very well considering there isn't any for sure blockbuster(~$300M) coming out the rest of July.

My $350M+ figure is basically my lowball figure.

I don't give two ****s about Despicable Me 2. I don't plan on ever seeing it or the first film because it looks like childish braindead garbage to me. I am strictly talking about it's numbers so no excitement here.

Haven't seen the sequel yet, but the first is quite good imo.

Jesus, why don't you set it on fire and dance on its grave, while you're at it?

I've seen both of them. They were adorable. Even more fun to watch in a full theater with a bunch of giggling kids.

I honestly said "Its so fluffy I'm gonna die" for a good year. Couldn't help it. Adorable is exactly how I would describe the first one.

DM2 was a shell of the first movie IMO. It ranks among Cars 2 as one of the worst follow ups to the first movie. There is about 10 min worth of plot, filled in with lots of little scenes of the minions doing funny things. I am honestly shocked that it made this much money, and that it got the reviews it did.

It's decent but not great, I'd give it 6/10 and that's being generous. The first film was 9/10 and among the best in CGI animated movies.
