I think it's possible Pacific Rim could do well... I certainly didn't expect World War Z to be as successful as it is. Especially a PG-13 zombie movie.

Emphasis on 'possible.'

That actually enabled it to make more money.

They showed the RIPD trailer in front of Despicable Me 2. Which seemed somewhat inappropriate in front of an audience made up mostly of preschoolers.
Most adorable crowd ever. :woot:

Every funny line gets an immediate instant replay from the kids in the peanut gallery. :funny:

The preshow stuff hadn't started yet when we entered the theater, so my nephew asked, "When are they gonna turn on the big TV??"

I feel like no one is going to watch Red 2.

I'll definitely catch it on Netflix because I like the cast, but this was a sequel no one was really screaming for. I'm too lazy right now to look up the numbers the first film made in the theater and on home video. I'm just shocked it got a sequel.

The first one was pretty successful. It got positive reviews, a Golden Globe nominated for Best Picture - musical or comedy (I'm still baffled by that though), and it made nearly $200 million on a $58 million budget.

Anybody can buy a Golden Globe. It's ten times more pointless and corrupt than the pointless and corrupt Oscars.

I reeeeeeally want to know who at Disney thought the Lone Ranger was ever going to a be a good idea. I seriously thought the Michael Isner era of bull **** decisions was over, Disney's only genuine live action franchise is Pirates and frankly they got lucky with that, animation is their only strength and much of that is down to Lassater and Pixar. It's no wonder they bought Marvel and Star Wars, they can't come up with their own stuff.

That is true. That was the same year Burlesque and The Tourist got nominated and the Golden Globes lost so much credibility in the process.

Though it's unfair to lump Red with those two movies because Red was much better than both those movies.

Agreed. I've been saying similar things in the Lone Ranger thread.

There's also Tron 3. Tron may not have been a huge hit, but it wasn't as disastrous as John Carter or what this movie is gonna do.

Disney's problem is that neither hero of these movies are really that accessible to modern audiences, though I think the Lone Ranger would have been better off B.O. with less focus on Johnny Depp and Tonto, and more emphasis on making the Lone Ranger a badass.

To me it just shows really bad judgement on Disney's part, they've gone to all this trouble of acquiring studios and yet they're letting their own brand suffer with bad ideas and flops.

Let's give the GG some credit. They weren't stupid enough to nominate Tom Hooper for awful directing of Les Mis.

Maybe it's time to greenlight a few spec scripts.

With a Star Wars, Marvel and Pixar mega hit every year Disney can afford to gamble on new ideas/projects to find the next POTC.

They can lose 200 million of movies like John Carter and Lone Ranger and still make a collective billion+ from SW, Marvel and Pixar films that same year.

But they've been doing it for years though. It's complacency on their part to devalue the Disney brand like they've been doing. Pirates was frankly lightning in a bottle. Don't forget that a good chunk of that billion dollars doesn't go into their wallets.

I don't think it devalues Disney's brand at all.

Outside of Pixar and Marvel the only big movie franchise Disney has is POTC.

Their non-Pixar animation is no where as successful as Pixar and their non-POTC movies are no where as successful as Marvel.

If anything the Disney brand was slowly dying without mega-franchises.

and Disney will keep well over a billion in profit from releasing Pixar-Marvel-Star-Wars movies every year. Thanks to dvd, tv rights, rides, toys, and other merchandise.

It's way better than relying on strictly new "franchises" like John Carter and Lone Ranger.

It's actually more of a, with an ESPN, ABC, Theme Parks etc. Disney actually makes most of its money of its TV holdings and theme parks.

Plus their animation studios have been bringing their A game the past few years they look to continue that with Frozen

I think he was only talking about their film division, though.

Yeah but that's why their film division can take those risks. Disney isn't a one trick poney and it doesn't depend on its film division nearly as much as many of its competitors in that industry.

Kevin Hart was the biggest winner last weekend as many people expected Despicable Me 2 to win last week, but nobody expected his recent film to make $17.5 million in under 900 theaters.
