In how many markets?
The thing about international numbers it seems is that studios love to pimp them pre domestic release to build up momentum(who wouldn't want to see a movie that's doing well). The reality being that, though always impressive no doubt, these numbers are always never presented in a controlled manner. It's always, records after record being broken but the last film opened up in 4 theaters in korea and the new one in 4 more countries...

Not to take anything away from the sheer tickets sold, but I personally almost never look at international debut's in a comparative sense. Asia has turned into such a huge market these days, and some films open there whilst others do so months later...just seems like there is no sense of relativity. Not like a domestic opening(though that has it's own issues).

That being said, it looks like Ironman has a good shot at a billion. Unless it looses steam(as Iron man has in the past runs). Another strong start to the Summer for Marvel. I wonder if some studio has the gull to take this early may spot next year.

Avengers opened in 42 markets. AVengers opened in 40. SO its comparatively the same. Either way you look at it, its a booming start and though i doubt it has the kind of legs Avengers did because of cmpetition, it seems this is well on its way to a billion. The critic reviews as well as reactions from the GA have been great so it will have very good WOM.

I thinks TASM 2 took that early May spot next year. Avengers 2 locked it down for 2015, and you can bet no studio is going to release any high budget film within 3 weeks of that movie.

Did you dislike it for fanboy reasons, general movie goer reasons, or both?

I'm not a marvel CB reader so my knowledge of the source material is very limited.
But i can't deny that there is some basic knowledge of characters. Having said that the reasons are more ( say 90 %) general movie goer then fanboy ( 10 %).

$1 billion WW is a done deal now. Good chance at ending up on the #5 WW list.

That would be awesome.

Avengers at #3 and Iron Man 3 at #5.

The only studio/person with a higher rankings than Marvel Studios would be James Cameron.

Big movies each year will continue to break international records as more markets open up and more movies continue to pander to the Chinese government.

That bodes well for Avengers 2 and Avatar 2.

Both should easily cross 2 billion in 2015/2016,

Pain and Gain basically made its budget back, so it is what it is.

IM3 is so mediocre that i am so angry that it made so much money. Marvel needed to be punished .

IM3 is my favorite solo MCU movie, so to me it deserves success!

What I feel really matters in terms of opening international numbers is weather or not Asia(specifically china) is included. Many films aren't even released there let alone this early into the intl release.

I've seen conflicting numbers about the # of markets Im3 vs Avengers had on opening. Either way I'm sure TDKR and ASM didn't open in 40 let alone china....thus it's all kinda fickle to me. But Marvel has a formula/method to their openings and opening buzz and it seems to be working for them. Curious to see what happens next year.

That's the scary thing. IM3 still has China to go which drops May 1st I believe. Since Marvel is all cozy with them now everything is going in their favor. Looking at ~$100 million there alone.

UPDATED: CHINA: 'Iron Man 3' Sets New Opening Day Record

Wednesday Update #2: According to reports on mtime.com, Iron Man 3 took in nearly $21 million (130 million RMB) on its first day in theaters. That shatters the record of $17.2 million (110 million RMB) set by Tranformers: Dark of the Moon in 2011. This all bodes very well for Iron Man 3. It's important to keep in mind that Dark of the Moon made $172.3 million in China during its entire run.

GLOBAL: 'Iron Man 3' Closes in on $250M
WEDNESDAY: Iron Man 3 surpassed the overseas total for Captain America, grossing $24.3 million on Tuesday to reach a global total of $242.1 million ahead of its U.S. release.

I don't think Cap was released in China. Too bad.
