$160M. FF6 is on pace for $750-800M WW. Who would've thought this series would reach bona fide blockbluster status. :woot:

Not me.

Usually a franchise hits its peak in the first or second movie.

Not six or seven movies down the road.

Incredible success story for Universal.

Yeah but if Fast 6 makes 800 million than they shouldn't care if they come in second to it by making 750 million. That's a lot of money, they won't care who is in front of them. Fast 6 was coming off of a ridiculously successful. Man of Steel is coming off of nothing.

But it features Superman, the most famous superhero and the most recognized around the world. Even taking SR in factor there is no reason why MOS should come in second against FF6.

I think for some people the mere fact that a movie series like this can do so well not only in America, but worldwide period is what they can't seem to wrap their brain around. It's not supposed to make that kind of money to them.

It came when Universal really needed a successful franchise.

I have a soft spot for Universal given that they were THE studio of my childhood (Jaws, BTTF, Jurassic Park, etc.) and that I practically lived there at the theme park in my younger years because I was there so often. I'm glad to see them succeed after having a rough go of it since the late 90s.

of course there is. its a brand new franchise no one knows if its going to be good or not. money is tight everywhere, people are more cautious

Which is why there seems to be a cap on how much reboot launch films (Batman Begins, ASM, Star Trek) can make.

But MOS, if it's good, will truly test the ceiling.

It could definitely break all records for highest grossing reboot, domestic and worldwide.

It's not embarrassing finishing behind a film like Fast 6 that is making massive money & I'm sure WB wouldn't care beyond what MoS itself does. It's only embarrassing for fans because the Fast series is a kind of parody film series. It's embarrassing that those filmmakers were able to make such a big success of that product especially if WB can't make Superman huge (which I think they will).

I wonder how much the Fast 6 and Bayformer audience overlap.

Fast 6 is the best movie of the summer so far and it deserves every cent it's making

Uh, so you've gone forward in time to see what June, July and August have in store already? :o

I really don't understand how that series is so successful. I saw the first and thought it was a much less fun remake of Point Break. Do they even have drag races in the new movies?

4, 5, 6, all have one race in them

A little but fast 5 was the turning point of the franchise where it became more about heists. Although it still boggles the mind they got to a 5th film seeing as you'd think they would have given up after tokyo drift?

I saw part 4 in theaters and actually remember falling asleep at certain points. Part 5 was a big improvement in that regards.

I nearly fell asleep during Fast and Furious also. In fact, I think it was the closest I came to falling asleep during a movie in a theater. I didn't really find Fast and Furious that fun to watch.

That changed with Fast Five because they stopped repeating the plot to previous movies. It felt fresh and envigorating as they went, more so than previous movies, "f**k it with reality, let's go crazy".

I don't understand this perspective. So what if it features Superman?

Superman doesn't get a pass to the top of the box office just because he's Superman, as SR clearly showed. He hasn't been a popular character in a very long time.

Hopefully MoS is a quality film and starts to swing his perception back around, but even if it is great it might take a minute for the audience to catch up, overseas especially.

Fast 6 is coming off Fast 5's $626m WW haul. As long as MoS is a solid film with solid #s there's no shame in not matching Fast 6 at the BO since they're in two very different conditions.

This series has baffled me for a while in terms of it's growing popularity and I think the reason is frankly the series took a while to find its footing. This series appeals to not only action films lovers, but general audiences as well, it has great characters, big stunts, humour, and honestly, as dumb a popcorn series as it is, the series has heart. You throw in the fact that it's without doubt the most racially diverse ensemble franchise going around and you've got yourself a recipe for success, and it's only going to get bigger with Fast 7.

Ah sorry, I'm not trying to downplay how good it is (I haven't seen it) or it's amazing box office performance mate. I'd be embarrassed for eg if a legendary comedy like Dumb & Dumber beat MoS in the same way even if I preferred Dumb & Dumber overall. The Fast series is a bit tongue in cheek rather than full on serious so it's kind of like it's not trying as hard as films like MoS or LOTR to be artistic and that's what makes its a bit embarrassing (to me) for those kind of films to get beaten by Fast type films. Don't know if I explained that properly but not meant to offend.
