Hmmm...24 set the standard especially on network TV. But some of my other favorite series like Strike Back and Banshee feature some pretty incredible action.

It was jarring at first, seeing Jack running around what looked like Albert Square, but once him and Chloe got in tandem again it was on! 
Jack had so many badass moments, in the first ep alone there was him taking down the CIA agents stealth style and then breaking Chloe out of the CIA base, and in the second ep his stand-off with the drug dealer where he offered him a deal to let him live was Jack at his best, just the cold, matter of fact way he let the guy know he was out of his league and might think he's a big deal but to Jack he's just another body to drop.
It was interesting to see the state Chloe was in, disillusioned and seemingly manipulated by that guy who runs her hacking crew, I think her and Jack are both struggling to find their identity now with no place to belong.
The addition of Yvonne Strahovski is a great one and I already like Kate, sadly she got all the smarts and they have made Benjamin Bratt's boss character the standard incompetent suit, unless he turns out to be a bad guy or somehow connected to Jack.
Heller as President is a good call and his own personal turmoil is an interesting sub-plot, plus he needs to watch out for Tate Donovan, that guy can never be trusted!
The story itself is timely and already intriguing with all it's moving pieces and shadowy uppercrust female villains. Jack Bauer vs Ava Hessington!

I haven't caught this yet. Does anyone feel the more "condensed" format has or is going to hurt the show at all?

No. If you look at most HBO series that are 12 episodes per season they can put together a good story. I think it will improve it if anything.

But to be fair, those HBO shows weren't based on a format that covered 24 hours in a day.
I don't think it will really hurt the show, but there has to be a good reason and execution for the time jump.

I think it is kinda like what the producers said while building up hype for the show...with the exception of season 5 (which was seamless, every hour mattered) and seasons 1 and 7 (which were not as bad but had a few filler hours), almost every season of 24 had about 12 fantastic hours and 12 hours of filler. There are hours we simply do not need to see. I think the time jumps will take care of that and make the story feel very tightly written and suspenseful.

Loved the premier but this also reminded me why I always wait for the DVD's to come out because I hate the wait.

The big question I have is are the writers planning to have Live Another Day act as conclusion of the Jack Bauer story or will they end it open endedly like they did with season 8? I personally would like a little finality while leaving the possibility of more stories should FOX want to continue it. I do not want a season 8 type of ending because that was not at all satisfying.

Looking at the episode guide on Wikipedia it looks like the time jump will happen
It was a good return but for me it didn't have the anticipation or excitement like other shows that returned like Arrested Development, Futurama, Veronica Mars (as a movie), Family Guy or even the fake Seinfeld reunion on Curb.
24 lived a very long life on TV and overstayed like most long running shows on TV. This feels like 24 season nine not the return of a show that was cut short.
I loved hearing "Events occur in real time." again but a lot has changed in the TV landscape since 24 peaked in season five. Other shows are providing great stories, twists and cliffhangers (Breaking Bad, Homeland, Game of Thrones). As much as they try to change things from locations to whatever agency is running things (CTU, FBI, CIA) it feels like a rerun of sorts. It is 24 mad libs.
A politician's life is threatened? We've only seen that in season one, four, five, six, seven and eight. Oh and the season two finale cliffhanger.
A supervisor not listening to subordinates with vital information.
Someone within the government who dislikes Bauer and wants him taken care of.
They've got me interested but that's only because they've cranked out the 24 formula that works but after awhile the formula grows stale. Hopefully the expiry date isn't episode five.
