Spider-Man 2 didn't have a cliffhanger
He defeated Doc Ock, saved the day, got the girl... resolution

I'm just saying Spider-Man 3 could have done the same thing, only it would be a bigger cliffhanger for the fanboys. Its a cliffhanger that doesn't piss off the audience. Or you could go for one that ends the movie in the middle of the story if that's the cliffhanger you want.

Doc Ock was taken care of. MJ wants to be with Peter.
Harry finds the means to have revenge on Spider-Man. He can turn himself into a Goblin. We see him at the wedding. Did he already take the serum? We'll find out in the next movie.

Sandman is taken care of. Harry is taken care of. MJ marries Peter (or some relationship moment).
Eddie finds the means to have revenge on Spider-Man. He turns into Venom. We'll find out in the next movie what happens.

And how about Venom killing MJ midway through the movie. Throw the audience a curve. Get rid of boring MJ.

If Sandman would have been the only villain, I'm not so sure people would have rushed to the screen to see it unless he would have been a star actor. It could have been Elektro and Sandman, though. So that the Topher Grace part would have gone to Elektro and his character would have more lively and energetic psycho.

But I think they indeed could have used to have all these characters split in two movies. Sandman(and Elektro or Lizard) and Venom/Gwen for the other film.

I hate cliffhangers and so do a LOT of people. When they go to a movie, they want it to be resolved at the end. Nuff said

I wouldn't have minded if they developed the characters of Eddie and Gwen in the movie and had Sandman/GG2 be the main villians. You could have had more scenes of Peter under the influence of the symbiote and thrown in a scene where he beats the crap out of an ordinary robber to show how much the suit effects him. You could maybe end it with Eddie looking at Peter in a sadistic way setting up Venom in the fourth(I wouldn't consider it necessarily a cliff-hanger but it definetly builds up excitement for the next installement). I would have loved a Venom stalking Peter without his knowledge and harassing Peter. They could have thrown in a Captain Stacy death storyline with Gwen blaming Spider-Man when it was actually Venom's fault.

I liked the third movie but I know a lot more people wouldhave liked it more if Sandman and Venom/Eddie characters were built up more.

Yes there would be, Sandman is defeated, Harry forgives Peter etc. It's no different than SM2 with Harry and BB with The Joker. It's not much a cliffhanger, just more of a clue who the next villain is.

And I heard the reason he didn't split it into two is he couldn't come up with a decent climax, not cliffhanger. There's a huge difference.

I really would have loved to see the symbiote play out through all of movie three. Then have just Harry and Sandman as the villains in movie 3. After Spider-man defeated Sandman and Harry throughout the film, and Sandman in a huge climatic Battle (extended fight in the Subway) we explore the fact that the black suit has completely taken control. He goes to the church and the film ends with the camera zooming into Venom's mouth- To Be Continued.

The fourth, out in May 2008 would have Spider-man being toyed with by Venom. More scenes for Sandman, and the death of Harry. This movie would have gone from good to great with more breathing room and development.
