Anybody know the reasons Subterranean got pushed back? Was it budgetary, story wise? Don't really feel like scrolling back through the thread to find out.
Anyhoo... What did I think about last night's eppy?
The Good:
-- Chloe on her feelings for Clark: "Don't worry, Jimmy. That
ship has sailed." Hah! Take that Chlarkers! Don't know if that double entendre was intentional or not, but it made me chuckle!
-- It was nice to see Clark front and center again. Sticking up for the little guy, that's MY Superman.
-- The bit about being an illegal immigrant was great! It was nice to see Clark call out his Mom (more on her later).
-- I chuckled at the Jimmy/Clark scene at the Planet. I know it was cheesy and goofy, but isn't Jimmy SUPPOSED to be cheesy and goofy? The look on Clark's face was priceless!
-- Lex at 33.1. That final scene of Lex strutting down the hallway with all the Freaks reaching out! Awesome. (Woulda been MORE awesome if this ep appeared earlier in the season though).
The Bad:
-- It's nice to see Smallville continue the tradition of hiring the worst freakin' guest actors on television. Jeesh. Did anyone else cringe everytime Javier or Jed or or the cop or Lex's assistant opened their mouths?
-- Speaking of Javier, that kid's English was terrible. And by 'terrible,' I mean a little too perfect. He was supposed to only have been in the country a few weeks, couldn't they have hired a more culturally authentic actor? I know the writers were trying to make a point about stereotypes, but at least hire a kid who's supposed to be an illegal Mexican immigrant whose Spanish isn't so attrocious!
-- Since they placed Subterranean after Static, they tried to shoehorn it in continuity-wise (i.e., references to Lex's proposal). Okay, here's the problem: Lex proposes (presumably) in December (after the Thanksgiving holiday depicted in Rage), so why is it clearly summer? Is Kansas going through one hell of a heat wave, or what?! Also, Lana isn't really feeling the effects of morning sickness. My (currently pregnant) wife can barely get out of bed and Lana's flying off to Amsterdam?! (That incredulous comment was actually from the missus

).
-- What the hell was wrong with Martha? Talk about out of character. Since when has Ma Kent turned her back on a little boy who needs help? Answer: Never! Clark, Ryan, Exploding Baby... The Kents ALWAYS look out for those in need. State senator or not, Martha was so off the mark. Don't recall the writer of the ep, but I remember it wasn't one of the regulars. After this and Static, I'm starting to wonder if Smallville's new writers have ever been properly briefed on who these character are.
The show's biggest flaw was that it was broadcast in the wrong place. If this had aired earlier in the season, I would have given it a pass. It would have also fit in better. Plus, the reveal of 33.1 would have meant more if it happened in the fifth slot of the season rather than the ninth. In all honesty, I wish they actually
didn't try to synch this episode up with Static by inserting the dialogue about the proposal. That way, on the DVD, they could have placed this episode back in its proper place -- after Arrow or Wither, can't remember -- where it would've made more sense. (Also, shoehorning the proposal plot point kind of diffuses the tension of that 'cliffhanger' anyway. If you look at the trailer for the second half of the season, her answer (or lack thereof) will be a major storyline. The way it's played here makes it seem like no big deal.)
As it stands, I got to give this episode a 5/10. If it aired where it was supposed to, I'd bump that up to a 6.5. Not perfect, but not 'Static' either.
