6.17 Combat - Discussion Thread (spoilers)

I disagree. For the most part wrestlers ARE actors. Just in more of a physical sense. Sorry wrestling fans, it's all rehearsed. As long as they're only playing thugs or fighters, I have no issue with it since thats what they do for a living. Now if they had Kane on the show trying to recite King Lear, then I'm in full agreement with you. LOL :)

This was mot likely initiated by the Network not the WWE, as a way to cross promote the brand to the WB audience that came over to the CW. Then again, it's not really "product placement" in the traditional sense, it's not like there were WWE logos all over the place. Honestly, if you dont follow wrestling or read spoilers about the guest stars, you'd have no idea that they were WWE wrestlers.

Exactly:up:

I see what you're saying. And I don't know how all this stuff goes down, but I'm seriously tempted to think that these things are initiated by the WWE. I don't know how exactly wide spread this type of thing is, but I do remember The Rock showing up on "Voyager" (or was it "Enterprise"?...one of the later Star Trek Shows...) back in the UPN days. So that was the first thing I thought about once Batista showed up...

Or perhaps you're right and this is the network's doing. I don't know. But as I said earlier, I'm in the minority here, so it's no big deal I guess.

It was Voyager.

I think Ashley was a waste of time, any sexy looking blonde could have played that part. But you need to make these Phantom Zoners big and threatening and they need to be able to fight. I'm sure there are actors out there that can fill the role, but the wrestling guys are just made for this kind of part. I think Batista and Kane were good casting.

I don't know if just *any* beautiful blonde coulda done the stunts... Ashley at least has fighting skills already. If they'd gotten some random babe with no skills, the Lois/Athena fight wouldn't have been as good.

you rule! Thanks :D

You're very welcome, I see it worked without edit.

 :D

Ya think? I dont think she did much that couldnt be choreographed for any actress. Lois was the one with most of the moves.

Well, maybe if they'd cast for someone else specifically with stage fighting/stunt experience it mighta worked, but I don't think *any* good looking blonde coulda done it.

However, I betcha Ashley just walked on set and needed very little in terms of training.

It may have made things a lot easier for the producers since a staged fight is so similar to what she does for a living. She probably just had to be shown how the fight was choreographed and woulda been good to go, too bad she was so awful...

Maybe the babe has a good body, I'm probably not the best judge of that, and has fight skills but she couldn't act her way out of a paper bag.

Awful.

i just watched this ep. i liked it, thought it was fun, and the fight was awesome, it was about time we saw something like that. were they fighting in superspeed the whole time? if not i wonder why clark didnt zip around. one thing i thought was funny at the end tho clark says something like
"i've never felt rage like that before, i could have killed him"
how many times has he said that now? i remember once when he grabbed lionel later on the said like the exact same thing to his dad

Point taken. But honestly, I would prefer actors over wrestlers in this show. And it just seems questionable to me that as soon as the WWE hit the CW, wrestlers are showing up on Smallville. It just seems like the WWE saw this network change as a new promotional method for their brand, and now may be just using Smallville as advertising for their performers/characters. It's just my view, and I don't know for sure that that's the case, but that's how it registers to me...and why I'm against these wrestler cameos.

Couldn't it be the other way around though, Smallville using stunt casting to draw some wrestling fans to the show? I haven't seen the episode yet since I live in Chicago, was there any product placement besides the actors, did you notice an abnormal amount of WWF commercials? I'm sure during Raw and Smackdown they promoted Kane and Ashley's guest starring roles on Smallville, so that's Smallville using the WWF as advertising.

I suppose that could be the case as well. There wasn't any product placement or anything...just a couple of Smackdown promos which is expected, so what you say could be the case. But I guess I was just concerned with the trend I'm seeing...First, when Smackdown and Voyager (thanks RakuMon!) were on UPN and The Rock guest starred, and now Smackdown and Smallville are on the CW and we've gotten 3 guest wrestlers this season. That's why it appeared to me that the WWE is actively trying to put their wrestlers in other roles, and I just don't want it to get out of hand. (Cause when I watch Smallville, it's to see comic book tv...not wrestling matches...so that was my only real concern in all of this.)

As I said before wrestling is not rehearsed at all.

As for whose idea it is to have the WWE superstars on Smallville, I would think its the creators. I mean how many actors have the bodies of people like Batista and Kane, not to many I would think.

OFF TOPIC, BUT...

That fight club announcer, love that guy's personality- definitely a type of tone possible to go with Spider-Man's agent (in the "origin" story aspect).

Yeah lol because of Cambell in movie 1, The World knows Peter Parker in his red & blue spidey suit as The amazing SPIDER-MAN :spidey: instead of the human spider .

Now this guy is some what Responsible for clark to get the idea to name himself in his page one headline article for The Daily Planet The MAN OF STEEL in the future . :super:

Chloe called him the Man of Steel, last week.

so you're going to tell me with a straight face that it's real?

No what he means it that though the results are pre-determined it's up to them how they get to that result - there are NO rehearsals. That's what he means when he says it's not rehearsed. Even though some spots are called on with advance between wrestlers, most of what you see is done on the spot on improv. so to speak.

but everything else is fake, the humerous but over the top storylines, the way the wrestlers act, and etc etc.

I didnt mean that every single action is rehearsed, but a lot of the "big" moves and the ones that take coordination are. A few years ago I spent about 2 hours in an airport bar in Dallas waiting out a hail storm and shooting the **** with Mick Foley (aka "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan) and he pretty much told me that they rehearse the big complicated finishing moves to ensure that no one gets hurt and the wrestlers are used to the "body positioning" (whatever the hell that means?) of their opponent.

Yea you are correct.

I could have done without the lesbian-esque exchange between those two or the voyeuristic scene at the beginning. Sitting there with her legs spread open. Good Grief. My kids watch this show.
