6.17 Combat - Discussion Thread (spoilers)

I'm gonna say this about last night's corn ball episode, I actually thought it was better than last week's :o

I really got into Clark's 'anger' and 'emotion'. And Lois, *phew*, I'd rather watch her than Lana any day! But even with the second-time forced wwe product placement, it was still enjoyable...

...Maybe for the first time last night I realised that Smallville is as cheesy as McGuiver, and I shouldn't have tried to keep it on the pedestal that it was once on.

PWNED!!!

seriously, though, my kingdom for an avatar of that punch. (the part before the closeup of Titans face)

Hard getting it down to under 80k, that looks like 81k. It was 79 on my system.

I'll trim a frame or two when I get back home tonight to get it a little smaller, I have to leave for work...

Tell me 'bout it. Here's my attempt:

I think it needs to be re-done from the original, and maybe brightened up a bit? It's hard to see what exactly is going on. Maybe Kai can make you a better (smaller) version, Hulk.

That was such a great scene! :D

Man.... this episode was awful in every single aspect. Please stop putting WWE people on the show. Please.

the WWE people were the only bad thing about the episode, and even they weren't too bad at all. especially kane.

there's just no pleasing some people.

Well that was a very entertaining episode, on many levels.

Once again we are shown the difference between our hero and the villain. Last week, Lex tried to excuse his horrendous act of killing the dear doctor by saying it was an accident and feeling no remorse for his acion whatsoever. This week, we have Clark accidentally and somewhat appropriately kill a horrendous criminal from another planet, but he doesn’t excuse what he did as accidental and feels the remorse involved in taking another life.

Clark is right in saying that he cant let these criminals stay here and that he’s most likely going to have to kill them, its something that’s going to weigh heavily on his mind or maybe he may have to seek Jor-el’s assistance in trying to find a way to send them back to the PZ.

What can we say about evil Lex, other than he has really crossed the line? There is just no turning back for him now. He has violated Lana in the worse possible way; she is going to be one pissed off woman when she finds out what he has done to her. And that doctor, the one that was supposedly his family physician; she’s the same one that was visiting Lionel with Lex in Mortal. Good continuity there.

I’m a little over listening to Chloe rant on about how wonderful she is and cant Clark snap at her without her getting all defensive. Chloe you and Clark have a great relationship and its okay for him to raise his voice to you occasionally just as you seem to think its okay for you to do with him from time to time.

Lois was really terrific in this episode. Is she now being a little softer with Clark after their Crimson encounter? I detected a little difference in the way she spoke to him and was she rocking that red outfit or what. I liked her using her smarts too, when she found the picture in the trash.

Speaking of outfits, Lois can rock the red, but Clark does black like no one can. It’s a shame he’s only allowed to wear it when he’s being a badass. Tom was great in all his scenes, such a change up from the way Clark was last week. I think Tom enjoys playing bad boy. I loved seeing Clark being all kinds of pro-active. Rounding up bad boy freaks and making citizens arrests. Was that the first time that our hero wound up on the front page of the paper, albeit anonymously? And he’s seriously kicking it up a notch to track down all the phantom zoners.

And Martha, I know its difficult being a parent and you try to say the right things to your son and you want him to be happy, and I agree with your advice that he needs to let go in order to move on, but don’t you think if your son believes that Lana was forced to marry Lex, that its not unreasonable for him to try and figure out if he’s right. You know, it might help him move on.

Terrific episode, bummer about the hiatus, but whatcha gonna do.

I have someone working on making this an avvy for me here also...only I was thinking of having the words "Fatality" flash on the screen after the uppercut..which would be hilarious.:woot:

I found the episode surprisingly enjoyable. Although I agree 100% on the wrestlers. For the love of all that's holy, keep them out of Smallville. I don't really have anything against wrestling I guess, but those folks have no place in the comics world. If I had known that once the WWE came to the CW, they'd force a bunch of "Smackdown" episodes down our throat on Thursdays, I would've gone into fanboy rants waaaaay sooner.

That's awesome B8, I thought the same thing last night while watching.

excellent episode. Spectacular fight scene. Looking forward to the reviews from those of you who do them:) now here is my question. i spent 30 minutes trying to read what was on the papers last night before lex threw them in the fire. I got as far as
"Test results confirmed" anyway someone can inhance it? Maybe if I had a high def tv.

I think Ashley was a waste of time, any sexy looking blonde could have played that part. But you need to make these Phantom Zoners big and threatening and they need to be able to fight. I'm sure there are actors out there that can fill the role, but the wrestling guys are just made for this kind of part. I think Batista and Kane were good casting.

An episode with issues raised; Issues previously seen dealt with, some with shocking twists; Lex going to new lengths to get what he wants, or what he thinks he wants. And real depth to an issue that has been overlooked and lacked explaining in other mediums; Clark facing the harsh reality of what happens when he gets the besst of the foe he faces. I liked what I saw last night.

I agree Avid, not much in the "acting" they were doing, they fill these roles perfectly.

Point taken. But honestly, I would prefer actors over wrestlers in this show. And it just seems questionable to me that as soon as the WWE hit the CW, wrestlers are showing up on Smallville. It just seems like the WWE saw this network change as a new promotional method for their brand, and now may be just using Smallville as advertising for their performers/characters. It's just my view, and I don't know for sure that that's the case, but that's how it registers to me...and why I'm against these wrestler cameos.

actually Mathhater, I think Kane did a great job as Titan, He didn't have to "Act" much, but I felt he was the perfect person for that role.

I agree, I think he did fine....and it helps cross promote a little also. If they did that with someone who so obviously does not fit the part, then I'd be upset, but he did a great job last night.

Funny, I see it as the other way around. Once WWE hit the CW, it provided more accessibility for the higher ups to be able justify bringing actors from one series to the other. I highly doubt that if they were doing things cross network, that it would be done at all.

My 0.02
Rock on

WOW!!!:wow: This episode was unreal. Best episode action wise hands down. Clark gave Titan one helluva smackdown. It was nice seeing Clark really let loose and give use a glimpse of what his strength is really capable of.

I thought it was cool that Clark was out looking to apprehend criminals, now nobody can say that he just sits in his barn doing nothing with his abilities.:whatever: I also loved how evil Lex was in this episode. Lionel better watch out because Lex is going to snatch up the MB title from him.:woot:
This episode was the most action packed episode of the series. It was definately a much needed shot in the arm after getting the heartbreaker that was Promise. And does anyone else think that Clark's going to go to the Fortress to ask Jor-El how to transport the corperal criminals back to the Phantom Zone?:super:

One more thing, why are some of you complaining about the wrestlers that make an apperance on the show? There's only been two of them so far in 6 seasons, and I think Kane did a good job acting wise and his appearance fit perfectly for the role. Even Batista did an ok job with what he was given, it wasn't his fault that his storyline was relegated to the B story and he only had five minutes of screen time.

All in all this episode in my opinion was one of the best of the season and very entertaining.:supes:

Couldn't agree more on all fronts. They needed a legitimately intimidating prescence for the Titan character, and they nailed just that.

Ok, really liked it! :) My hopes about this one having some decent action sequences weren’t unfounded. The Clark/Titan fight was one of the most spectacular of the show. Really showed the brute strength of both, plus Clark used his powers smartly as well. It was a bit weird seeing Clark in his daze like that. He’s taken the Lexana wedding hard, especially how it happened with him and Lana coming so close to happiness together. So I cant blame him. He was channeling it through aggression. Which is not exactly the best medicine because at some point he does need to sit down and sort out all his feelings and emotions and coming to terms with them. But atleast the aggression served a purpose. He was really intent on hunting down the zoners and then going after this fight club. Only at the point where Lois was hurt that I sensed Clark tearing through his stoic front, when he yelled, ‘’leave her alone!’’ And then the awesome, PO’d uppercut.

There were funny bits too, like Clark and Lois facing each other in the ring. Their expressions, lol!

Speaking of Lois, I just loved her. Smart and funny, and ballsy, she’s really makes quite an amazing Lois Lane, and Erica Durance seems to love playing her, you can tell. And she managed to get a story, and she was working on it in the hospital. Lol. That’s our Lois.

Martha was weird. I don’t know what’s up with the writers here.

Chloe seems to be coming to grips with the fact that she’s meteor infected. Even making jokes about her latent Kryto freak power.

And now the really heartwrenching stuff. As amazing as Tom Welling and Erica Durance were, and Michael Rosenbaum was very good too, I think this ep belonged to Kristin Kreuk. She is becoming a better actress with each passing episode. She was so good throughout, and when she was apologizing to Lex, it just broke my heart. When Lana finds out…whatever it is that Lex has been doing. Whoa.

And Lex has just now completely crossed into evil-dom. And what a good job Michael does at it.

Kudo’s to Kane also. He was totally believable in his role, and even Ashley wasn’t half bad.

I disagree. For the most part wrestlers ARE actors. Just in more of a physical sense. Sorry wrestling fans, it's all rehearsed. As long as they're only playing thugs or fighters, I have no issue with it since thats what they do for a living. Now if they had Kane on the show trying to recite King Lear, then I'm in full agreement with you. LOL :)

This was mot likely initiated by the Network not the WWE, as a way to cross promote the brand to the WB audience that came over to the CW. Then again, it's not really "product placement" in the traditional sense, it's not like there were WWE logos all over the place. Honestly, if you dont follow wrestling or read spoilers about the guest stars, you'd have no idea that they were WWE wrestlers.

Wow. I'm apparantly in the minority when it comes to WWE approval on Smallville. Oh,well. I'm glad most of you all are fine with it. :cwink:

I do think Ashley was a complete waste of space, but both Kane and Batista did their jobs, for me.
