I know this has been discussed to death in the Gen Discussion thread but I'm curious in terms of numbers on who thinks Batman has retired during those 8 years and who thinks that he's been active (or semi-active)?

My vote still goes to active (semi-active). I think he's just been doing it more discreetly and he can't move on from not being Batman.

Semi-active, I say, based on the frozen in time comment.

How can someone be semi active? LOL You're either active or you're not. Sure, there's "part time" but in this case, you're either active or you're not.

He has lulls of normalcy before feeling a need to return to the streets. We've been told that there's a lot of anger festering beneath the cracks of a calm veneer. Hints of that may be what keeps Batman in action from time to time.

My guess is that he has been active during most time of the 8 years, just less and less and finally not at all for like 2-3 years.

I don't think it has to be so black and white as to say non-active for 8 years or active for 8 years. It's a long time, much can have happened.

Active, I'd rather see Batman in his prime go against Bane not a retiree.

There's no way he was completely retired for those 8 years. That would be strange. He had to have been somewhat active. No where near as active as he was during his Batman Begins and TDK days. And the thing is, unlike those days, his crusade isn't really doing anything. When he first hit the city as Batman in Begins he really changed things. During the 8 year gap between TDK and TDKR though, with the Harvey Dent Act, he's not really changing anything. I think that's where the "frozen in time" comment comes from.

One thing we know is that he does retire at some point, given the teaser. I'm convinced that this actually fits into the end of the film, not the middle or the beginning as the scene sets you up to believe.

But didn't Gordon say "this evil rises" in the hospital scene? You think it's something else post-Bane events?

Wouldn't put it past Nolan. It's definitely set up to make you think it's during the middle given that line. Either something could have traumatized Gordon mentally, or 'this evil rises' refers to the destruction in Bane's wake (from the bomb), not the actual figure himself.

It's a stretch, but just a theory. As I said in the other thread, I'm not a fan of him zig-zagging on the issue.

Perhaps post-Bane. Bruce was wearing a black ski mask during the meeting if I recall. To me, it says he snuck out of wherever Bane had incarcerated him.

Well ****, you know what, you've probably nailed it. That makes sense given what I've heard. Maybe he tries to convince Gordon that in order for Batman to come back, they need to find a way to bail out Bruce Wayne.

Retired. I am convinced because he has practically no new gear. His suit is old and has no new bat mobile. Also, Nolan has been deeply influenced by Frank Miller, who wrote about Bats coming out of complete retirement.

He'll be active, but in a lesser capacity.

The "active" argument is never backed by any logical arguments ot evidence.

I think the most convincing argument for inactive status is the fact TDK ends with the conclusion that Batman's actions and Dent's actions pre-Two Face have left Gotham where it needs to be. If Batman still has to fight off masked super villains, what was the point of all the sacrifices and work the good guys put in? Bane is here to simply mess things up to the point Bats is needed again...

Personally, TDK should have ended the series, and Nolan knows it. He jusy agreed to make TDKR so Warner would finance Inception.
