I'm a bit disappointed with this years film and performances. There has been good films and good performances, but I just don't think any of the fall into the category of being great. I've seen all the nominated films except The Sessions.

That's how I felt about last year. 2011 was the weakest year for film in a long time.

I guess it really depends on how many films you watch per year. I go to the theaters around two to three times a week. Not the year with the most, but the few gems in there will stand the test of time spanning even twenty years from now being just as relevant. Perks of Being a Wallflower, for example, I'm seeing teens twenty years from now still loving and relating to because it was so honest and real; it also had the best performances I've seen all year. In that the characters themselves seemed real and take center stage over who was performing as them.

Golden Globes tonight. I like their main nominations better.

It seems like we say that every year.

I think that comes from expecting every year to be filled with timeless classics. Whereas these films (1) aren't always nominated for best picture nominations and those that are may fade with time still - the academy doesn't really always pick films what films will still be watched and known twenty years from now, (2) don't always have a huge box office take - sometimes films that only have a relatively good box office or sometimes even flop at box office are remembered years later (The Never Ending Story didn't do well now look at how many of us have grown up with it and MANY classic disney films didn't do well either), (3) there's around one to three per year - you'd have to go a lot with those odds - and the best years typically only have five over a whole year. Basically to catch them, you'd need to be that cinephile addict who sometimes goes three times a week and still that isn't catching all of them.

I'm only watching the Globes until Downton Abbey comes on at 9. I will be watching the red carpet to see what Lawrence and Chastain are wearing.

I think that Les Mes is winning best supporting actress, best actor and best picture in it's category. I see Lincoln winning for best drama, best director and best actor. I think that JLaw can win best actress in her category but I certainly don't think she is a lock and personally I see Watts over taking front runner Chastain in best actress in a drama.

If I'm wrong whocares, the Globes don't matter to the Oscars one way or the other.

After having seen the performance from these three, i really hope Watts takes it.

If that were true, Red Tails might have done better awards-wise, even without the poverty (historical racism instead). A lot of people love Beasts, even though there may be a taint of poverty porn to it.

I really thought better of you.

The only reason the movie got nominated was because it had black people and poverty in it.

I honestly haven't seen it yet. I just did that to f**k with you. :yay:

I'm rooting for Lawrence at the globes and the Oscars. Loved the movie and her performance.

Watts and Chastain are great actresses but I have no desire what so ever to see their films.

Jessica Chastain was great and would be a worthy winner for sure. I haven't seen Silver Linings Playbook, but I do like Jennifer a lot.

Doesn't seem, it's how it always goes down. Doesn't matter what year, people always cry about it being a terrible year for film. :whatever:

Oh! I Then I approve entirely.

Red Tails would never have gotten recognized purely because the academy hates GL.

I agree. 2011 was very weak.

This year has been better... Although I do think it's been weaker than other years' offerings.

I hated 2012's Summer movie season. Not one movie impressed me to a large degree but I didn't dislike the year overall.

Yeah, I'd agree that other than a few movies for me (Avengers, Ted, The Dark Knight Rises) Summer movie season wasn't that bad.

It makes it sound like you thought all three of those were pretty bad.

Skyfall by Adele won the Golden Globe.

And the score went to Life of Pi.
