But to give De Niro and Jackie Weaver best supporting nods? Obviously we know who's at work here.

Jackie didn't do a whole lot but De Niro deserves the nom. It's the best work he's done in years.

I don't really remember Weaver doing anything that's really Oscar worthy in the movie. It's not like she had a big speech or anything either. She was a just a mother concerned for her son, but even then she didn't really do much on that front either.

Boy sometimes it seems like one can say almost anything around here and no one notices.

Hotdog on a sailboat. I love otters. Pee pee poopy doody.

I loved Deniro's performance and think he 100% deserves his nom. I loved the whole cast and I'm fine with all of the acting noms. Should Weaver win her award? No, Hathaway or Adams should win.

Yeah she was better in Animal Kingdom but even then she didn't do a whole lot though. But De Niro was great in 'Silver'.

Yeah despite Weaver, to be honest, my mentality is "More nominations for SLP? Great!"

Just happy that ParaNorman and Beasts of the Southern Wild got love.

After these surprises I'm surprised that some think that Chastin is a lock to win. Lawrence and Watts should not so easily be counted out. There seems to be a feeling in hollywood land that Watts might finally deserve a win after all these years and Lawrence has you know who in her corner and a showy but great performance in her back pocket. Until Chastin wins the SAG I ain't saying she's a lock.
Watts' performance is outstanding. I'm actually bummed that The Impossible didnt get more love, and even though i havent seen all of the movies, in my opinion Watts' performance is much better than Chastin's.

I think the ending was a problem several BP nominees this year. *Looks at Lincoln and Django*

A billion dollars shouldn't equal a best pic nom.

I never meant to imply a set equation. But what else was the BP category expansion for if not to try to include some more "common moviegoer" fare (IE action films) that had a huge audience and were well-liked?

Tentpole films are the engine that keeps the industry running. It's what allows the studios to produce the much less profitable Oscar bait stuff. Large scale filmmaking, when it's done with quality ought to be celebrated. Especially these days where films are becoming cheaper and cheaper to produce at a professional level and home entertainment options getting better and better, the large scale stuff is the most unique experience Hollywood has to offer and the best reason to go out to the movies.

So yeah, I definitely feel the Academy has a flaw in their voting system if they couldn't fill the ten slots this year and failed to capitalize on a primary reason for the category expansion. It's not a big deal though, just my observation. At the end of the day, the extra slots were always for token nominations.

Lincoln should've ended on a certain poetic scene but drags out for anothe 15 minutes. While i liked Django, its ending was just sloppy. The narrative pretty much stopped once Foxx escaped from the Aussies.

But here's another thing to consider. I think a reason the Oscar voters don't vote for some movies for BP is because they already have enough attention. Let's a smaller movie that actually didn't get enough love the first time around like Beasts gets nominated. It gets released in theaters again where more audiences are going to pay attention and see it.

Keep in mind that all members of the academt votes for BP, and only people in the industry who are in that part of the industry vote for the other awards (such as directors vote for directors and so on...)

Pretty much with both. I'm surprised Spielberg did that. I felt the ending was something Ron Howard would have done. :funny:

Spielberg also elongated the ending to A.I., a film that I still feel has moments of greatness in there despite its flaws.

I suppose you have a point there. I guess I just thought they were trying to reverse the poor ratings trend by nominating more films that have an audience, but they don't really seem to be going that way at the moment.

Again, I don't think it's a conspiracy (that's ludicrous), but I do think the current system makes it rather easy for things to slip between the cracks.

If the Oscars were all about the mainstream/big, we wouldn't see Geoffry Rush blossom as an actor after his win. Samething with Tarantino. Michael Ardt wouldnt be working on Star Wars or Toy Story 3 without his win for a small underdog that was 'Little Miss Sunshine'. It helps expose new talent.

The Departed and Django were his best imo.

Oh I totally forgot about the Departed, add that to the list. I haven't seen Django yet, so I'll reserve my opinion, although I heard he's brilliant.

Get Arnold Schwarzenegger to present the actress category. The potential entertainment value alone with send ratings sky high.

He couldn't even pronounce "Avatar". [YT]CPkTQA9rYXY[/YT]

Another movie that I wish had more love was surpringly 'The Grey'.
