A billion dollars shouldn't equal a best pic nom.

Unless your Cameron.

Ha. Beat me to it. I agree with ISS's post. But then how can we explain mediocrity like Avatar getting nominated? :oldrazz:

I would have given the tenth slot to Moonrise Kingdom or maybe The Master before I gave it to TDKR or Skyfall, but those two are still more deserving than Cameron's last effort.

Why do you guys think that Affleck missed the cut? I mean I think that Bigalow isn't in there because of the silly torture controversy played a role but I don't see what happened with Affleck. Did the movie peak too early or something?

The only thing I can think of is that the Academy is sprouting their 'it's not his time yet' BS.

That makes me strangely giddy if that was the case.
You are so mean...like me.

I'm honestly tired of hearing about Rises when it comes to the award shows. Most people liked the flick and it made a billion dollars after being hurt at the box office by horrible act of violence. It's a success and if the fans can't see that because the oscars didn't. give a **** about it, that is sad. I think that PTA should have gotten a nom for directing but I'm okay with the deserved acting nods the movie did acquire.

I loved Deniro's performance and think he 100% deserves his nom. I loved the whole cast and I'm fine with all of the acting noms. Should Weaver win her award? No, Hathaway or Adams should win.

Really, Adams? She deserves to win someday, but her character is so peripheral in that film that she makes Weaver seem more worthy. I think it is a case really where there were three strong choices (Hathaway, Fields, and Hunt) and just needed to put two more names in it to round it out to five. But I do not think there were five stand out supporting actress turns this year, at least in the movies the Academy likes. Just my opinion.

I thought that Adams was amazing and had a great important character to play. She was practically The Master in that film.

Actually, it's pretty quiet. No mention of the Oscars there.

Huh. That's a surprise. I figured they'd be hoppin' mad. ;)

It not getting a Best Picture nomination was inevitable (though I personally preferred it to Argo and Les Mis, two movies I did very much enjoy), but I was surprised to see it didn't even get a nomination for Sound Mixing and Visual Effects. I guess the Academy really does hate super-popular Nolan. Oh well, he's in good company with Hitchcock, Scorsese, Kubrick and pre-Schindler's List Spielberg. :oldrazz:

Pleased that Deakins is getting recognized for Skyfall, but no cinematography nom for The Master?

"Wut."

It deserved visual effects over Hobbit and Avengers that's for sure

Skyfall's cinemtography was a shoo-in and one of the favorites along with Life of Pi. I can't say anything for The Master because I haven't seen it yet.

Interesting point, but she really only had two scenes where she wielded the power and in both of them she is either being overshadowed by PSH or JP's characters. I just did not think she got a chance to stand out from the dynamic of those two in the movie.

I don't think so because they gave Nolan tons of cred with Inception. I think its just that TDKR didn't have the impact that TDK had, and it was overall a lesser movie than it's predecessor. Unfortunately that probably affected the tech noms that TDKR could've obtained but didn't.

Nolan was snubbed for Best Director for Inception. Yeah... they have a grudge against him. Same as Spielberg during the 70s/80s.

It's jealously.

I thought that she held her own everytime she was on screen.

I think that they have a grudge because of the Inception and TDK snubs but this year? I don't think it was the grudge.

I agree. I think the Academy can be dismissive of Nolan...but not this year.

I thought she was fine, I just do not think the role was that good.

As for Nolan, I think the fact that they put dreck like Snow White and the Huntsman in VFX over TDKR shows a continuation of the hatred. I think he will have to make an earnest historical drama about one of the Academy's pet issues before they ever acknowledge him as a serious filmmaker. Oh well, they have a history of being that blind.
