I was thinking please no Hooper for BD, then I get my wish but with no Affleck or Bigelow either.

It's a great movie, but Lincoln and Life of Pi are better. I am rooting for Lincoln among the heavyweights. And for once, I think my choice will win.

The weird thing about Hopper is that, he gets a lot of hate and I can understand why. I do think he's successful at what he does. Well to a degree. I think there's almost an unhealthy hate towards him at times..

I think his body of work have been very British..hehe..JK..seriously I think he hasn't been able to branch out and do things that are of his own voice. He's a little generic. I think Les Mes is his best work despite the camera work, but still, he's almost like a journeyman-type director who lucked out.

Hmmm....

no best director nomination for Kathryn Bigelow?
no best actor nomination for Suraj Sharma in Life of Pi?
no best cinematography for The Master?
no best make up for Cloud Atlas?

.....hmmmmm

I thought that Cloud Atlas had some of the worst most offensive makeup of the year

As an Asian-American, I thought the make-up was awesomely funny at times.

I think most of the hate for Hooper is that he beat out The Social Network which was the film for the Internet generation and thus the Internet hates him. I'm a big fan of John Adams, The Damned United, The King's Speech and to a lesser extent Les Miserables so I think he's one of the best directors out there.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think it was perfect. The Mexican female character was horribly done for instance. However, there are far more positives than negatives: Halle Berry as a Caucasian woman, Tom Hanks as an old man, Hugo Weaving as a daemon, etc.

A-****ing-greed.

Oh, just wait. With the success of Les Miz, Miss Saigon on film is only a matter of time. It's going to make Cloud Atlas look like a masterpiece.

That wasn't makeup. For that one, they actually removed the makeup he normally wears.

I liked The King's Speech and The Damned United, but the choices he made for Les Mis, I think held the movie back and had shown me that he hasn't improved as much as film director and that he still has his televion directing habits.

It's kind of sad really when you watch TV shows that appear way more cinematic than Hooper's work on film.

Sort of the same with Joss Whedon and The Avengers. Except his work on Serenity looked cinematic enough to me.

With Avengers, there's enough spectacle that it hides some of Joss' weakness as a director. I think his blocking is okay, and I think his cinematography is too flat looking, but the pacing is fine. He excels at writing and cast chemistry so it's mostly a win for him. Also, directing The Avengers, I would image, is a stressful gig and he pulled it off.

I will agree with that. Whedon compositon wise did have weird choices too, but like Octoberist said, there's enough spectacle there to overcome that and Whedon didn't hold it back the same way Hooper did.

These awards are getting closer by the minute. A little nervous, optimistic but above all can't wait!

I thought that Huntsman's Vxf were just fine. I would have liked to see TDKR nominated for VFX but the Oscars are obsessed with obvious uses of CGI so I see why it didn't. get a nom. It's dumb I know.

Well, still there - with Nolan I think it's probably because he does most things practically on the set whereas this award really goes to the masterminds behind their computers. I might be wrong but this award in specific has always been more computer oriented. Nolan runs those sets that I love being around and got the pleasure of being in - those explosions (the football stadium for example, I was in the stock market scene) are done for real on the set. The guy blew up an entire building in TDK for example whereas others would just use computers. Computers add a little bit more, but in the end it's all Nolan. As per the Bat having weight - I'd say that comes a lot from all of the rigs and suspension from cables and wires that were around it on the set and then just digitally aided to get it by itself by the computer.

I'm sure his millions of dollars and sexy super models will help him get over it.
Thanks for bringing that up. I almost felt genuinely sorry for him there. :o

I think TDKR deserved a Sound nomination more than one for Visual Effects.
