88th Annual Academy Awards

Eh, I don't think Selma deserved a Director nod. Olyewo was the big snub there and really the only stand out black performance. This year it's more understandable why people are upset. Almost all the major snubs were minorities and minority-driven films and all of the standout minorities but Innaratuu were snubbed. Last year Selma was really the only standout. This year you had Creed, Compton, Beasts of No Nation, & Benico deal Toro.

I can't comment on Will Smith because I haven't seen Concussion.

Okay but the point is, how can a director be one of the top 5 directors of the year with out making one of the top 8 films of the year?

I mean there have been director/picture splits for the winner but in the nominations, when there are more possible Picture nominations for director it is laughable for a nominated director to not have made a Best Picture nominee as is what happened with Fox Catcher.

That's one I wanted to see but never got around to watching.

They are only being called snubs because of they are minority-driven films. I can't comment on Beasts of No Nation, but other then that the only snub I see there is Bencio.

These movies need to be better then the movies and performances nominated. They aren't imo.

The issue is that many of the performances and films that WERE nominated aren't particularly great either or are at the very least at about the same level as the minority driven films. Part of the issue stems from there still being fewer opportunities for minority actors than others when it comes to making films to begin with. But even taking into account the smaller number of roles and films, their rates their rates of nomination are still lower than what would be expected if all other considerations were equal and only the quality of the work was being considered.

This a systemic matter. Even if all of the voters were proven to be completely non-racially biased, this kind of thing would still occur just because of the way nominations and votes are made and the way films are promoted.

The Oscar votes are very much about timed release schedules and a studios ability to send out screeners to the right people. Its the reason why The Dutch Girl (RT score 71%), which stars a cis gender white man playing a trans woman is nominated for multiple Oscars while the much more critically acclaimed Tangerine (RT score 96%) which stars transgender actresses of color is up for zero Oscars. Obviously the academy is open to stories about trans characters and yet it continues to only nominate straight white male actors and filmmakers who take on those stories. Eddie Redmayne is a much bigger name than Kitana Kiki Rodriguez. Universal and Focus features have much more sway than Magnolia. Tom Hooper is an established purveyor of Oscarbait.

To imply that as a group in general filmmakers and performers of color failed to make films worth nominating is ridiculous.

So how come Charlize Theron wasn't nominated for an Oscar for Mad Max, yet Jennifer Lawrence was for Joy. :hmm

It may have to do with the genre. It's an accomplishment for a movie like FR to even get those nominations.

You do realize that Inarritu is nominated after winning last year right? Does he not count anymore?

This is confounding two different issues. Available roles with the most deserving nominees. That is two wholly different things. There being Oscarbait studios has nothing to do with race and thus doesn't matter to this argument. Everyone knows you have to play the game to be nominated, no matter your race. It is why certain directors and actors have problems, no matter their race or sex.

You bring up RT. Let's look at the Critic Choice Awards:

This isn't even a minority thing. This is literally only a problem because no one black was nominated.

Yeah, at the end of the day, i am glad that an action film like Mad Max was honored with 10 nominations, given how last year, making fun of a superhero movie was considered to be good sport.

JL is basically the Academy's main bae at this point. She could do a movie dealing with a woman's bout with diarrhea in real time and the Academy would be like "YAAAAS KWEEN, THAT'S GREAT DRAMA!!!!"

Fury Road is nothing like a typical superhero movie. That is why it is nominated. It has depth and was made with such craft only seen in TDK when it comes to superhero movies. Do you expect BvS, Civil War, Suicide Squad, Doctor Strange, Deadpool or Apocalypse to be of that quality?

She is the new Streep, just less talented.

Action movies have not been totally ignored recently. District 9, Avatar and Inception have been nominated. Though I doubt a superhero film will ever receive the same courtesy. Or rise above snobbery-induced ridicule.

STATEMENT FROM ACADEMY PRESIDENT CHERYL BOONE ISAACS

I’d like to acknowledge the wonderful work of this year’s nominees. While we celebrate their extraordinary achievements, I am both heartbroken and frustrated about the lack of inclusion. This is a difficult but important conversation, and it’s time for big changes. The Academy is taking dramatic steps to alter the makeup of our membership. In the coming days and weeks we will conduct a review of our membership recruitment in order to bring about much-needed diversity in our 2016 class and beyond.

As many of you know, we have implemented changes to diversify our membership in the last four years. But the change is not coming as fast as we would like. We need to do more, and better and more quickly.

This isn’t unprecedented for the Academy. In the ‘60s and ‘70s it was about recruiting younger members to stay vital and relevant. In 2016, the mandate is inclusion in all of its facets: gender, race, ethnicity and sexual orientation. We recognize the very real concerns of our community, and I so appreciate all of you who have reached out to me in our effort to move forward together.

Civila War I can plausibly see within a comfortable distance of that quality.

I bet she'll get nominated for something again on the 89th awards at this rate. :o

Gawd i wish, especially for BvS. :hmr:

Yeah, action movies are more in favour of the oscar boards then a superhero film, they probably hate how their domination all the box office records.

How many have honestly deserved a legit nomination? Outside of TDK, which I think most agree was snubbed. If we get another situation like that, I'll agree. But that has to happen first.

It's really a shame TDK didn't get a BP nomination.

Do you expect it? People here like to complain about the Academy not nominating superhero movies. Where are the movies that deserve it? The one worthy performance won an Oscar.

What box office record does a superhero film own?

Do i expect it? Definitely not, unless we're talking Dark Knight level good.

lol maybe Affleck's Batman directed film has a chance, he's an Academy favourite with his directed films.

Well before Star Wars and Jurassic World came along, films like the Avengers and Dark Knight were breaking records.

Plus if a studio wants to release a blockbuster film in the summer then best bets go to releasing a superhero film for a good box office.

She is the new Streep, just less talented.

I feel like throwing this many awards/noms her way this early in her career/life is just setting her up for failure in the long run.
