I think it's really stupid that Beasts of No Nation didn't get anything major. Before award season started I thought it was a shoe-in

I was hoping Jason Mitchell would get nominated for Straight Outta Compton but I knew that was a really long shot

Still havent seen Creed so I cant comment on Coogler or MBJ.

But I still think all this isnt as bad as last year where David O. as MLK and Selma were lauded as the best film and best performance, respectively, in my circles and still got nothing.

Beast wasn't going to get nominated because of the kerflaffle it started with the theater owners. Netflix put it in the theaters to make it eligible for an Oscar. Theater owners didn't want it to premiere on Netflix at the same time. If you show a movie in theaters the same time as Netflix the majority of people will stay home and watch it and theaters would have wasted a space that another movie could have been using.

But whatever happened to you know... looking at the actual movie?

I mean it's always been about politics and campaigning.

I dont think they've just looked at the actual movie for decades

The Academy Awards have always been about more than the films...however if they determine that a film is not eligible...like they may have for Beast then they didn't look at it

Then instead of Best Picture it's Best Picture That Did This and That Then This Because

I doubt they even watched the film. :funny:

Interesting read. I certainly understand the angst some may have at the Oscars being too white but there's no point blaming the Academy, they only vote on the films that are made, and if there aren't enough films featuring diverse casts you can't expect the voters to vote for anything other than what's presented to them.

What I feel like is happening is that the Academy is being pressured to vote a certain way for the sake of diversity. That means it's no longer about performances. And that is not the right way to look at things. The issue isn't an Academy issue, it's the studios making the films. They are the ones who green light the films and approve the casting. The Academy is frankly at the bottom of the chain in his instance, they can only vote for the stuff that is made, so there's no point in going after them. If people have a problem it needs to be directed at the studios.

Let's be frank, it hasn't been 100% about the performance for a long time.

'Lack of Diversity' actually just means 'no black people' nominated.

I wish people and film journalists would just call it like it is. Spike and Jada would still be saying the same thing if Oscar Issac or Javier Bardem would have been nominated.

Idris Elba will surely get a Oscar nomination and probably an Oscar win before all is said and done because he is that talented. Denzel hasn't had a worthy Oscar role in a very long time. For some reason, there don't see be that many Oscar quality black actresses in films right now. I see many black actresses on television, and most aren't very good, but not many in films. Viola Davis has the chops (and she's been nominated before). Obviously N'yongo has an Oscar but she hasn't had many opportunities since then to get back on the ballot

His ridiculous unnatural sounding accent was apparently enough for the Academy to swipe left on his role.

Also, who knows what kind of campaign the producers and those involved put forth? The Academy always needs to be goaded, especially for a movie with such a dull engine to it being the subject matter

That was clear enough when they snubbed Joaquin Phoenix in 2013 for The Master. Plus, he didn't even get a nom for Her.

Imho his accent didnt bother me after 15 minutes, I kind of just settled in and watched his acting chops. I do think his acting saved the film and kept it from being another blind side type fluff but he didnt get picked so whatever

He got in for The Master. I just remember it because that was the time there was an article where apparently Harvey was whining about Joaquin not campaigning enough. :funny:

It was outright ridiculous that Selma was nominated for Best Picture but not Best Director when Foxcatcher was nominated for Director but not Picture.

Eh, I don't think Selma deserved a Director nod. Olyewo was the big snub there and really the only stand out black performance. This year it's more understandable why people are upset. Almost all the major snubs were minorities and minority-driven films and all of the standout minorities but Innaratuu were snubbed. Last year Selma was really the only standout. This year you had Creed, Compton, Beasts of No Nation, & Benico deal Toro.

I can't comment on Will Smith because I haven't seen Concussion.

I'm watching The Revenant right now. God damn that bear attack scene :wow:

Concussion didn't look interesting to me, and Creed just isn't my kind of movie at all, so I can't comment on those.

He should've won. I truly believe he was better than DDL that year.

They are only being called snubs because of they are minority-driven films. I can't comment on Beasts of No Nation, but other then that the only snub I see there is Bencio.

These movies need to be better then the movies and performances nominated. They aren't imo.

2016 Oscar Checklist for every category.

This might be the worst year for Original Song that I can remember.

Beasts was..I even rank it above my beloved Fury Road...but perhaps a bit too much for the Academy in certain places.
